Two buttons on Indy's cuff?

Post by Mark Brody »

I was browsing around the main pages looking at the bag, when I found this picture from Last Crusade that gives a pretty clear shot of Indy's cuff. His sleeves are rolled down and buttoned, and you can see down his jacket sleeve.

Never noticed that before. I thought he only had one button. Looks like Wested got that detail right on the shirt. Wonder if that detail carried over to CS? Wonder also if the ephaulets on the real shirt are pointed or like the Wested and Todd's Costumes shirt. I was watching RAIDERS the other day and saw that the ephaulets didn't point. Todd got the details right. And going by memory I was sure it was wrong.

The LC and CS shirts had much shorter, and pointed epauletts compared to the raiders shirt.

Interestingly enough, the Raiders shirt appears to only have one button on the cuff. Chalk another one up for the differences from movie to movie.

I don't think there are 2 buttons. The one closer to his hand looks like it's a piece of mud. We'd need to see another pic from a more static scene to start changing all our shirts! :) JMO.

KT,

A couple of observations, 1) where would they get mud in the desert? And 2) if the front "button" is a gob of "mud", that's awfully strange spacing for buttons on a cuff. I agree though, that more pictures would be good before we all start cutting/ moving/ adding buttons.

I just watched it frame by frame in HD. The "button" on the end of the cuff is actually just a shadow. It's quite an illusion. The shadow gets darker at the bottom, making it look like the shadow to a button, which is, in fact, just a lighter shadow. All the same, it is an illusion.

No, it can't be. Not according to common sense (and common shirtmaking)
It's got to be a second button. Because the one not closer to his hand, if it's the only one, then it's positioned completely wrong (too low) on the cuff, which cannot be.

Just my opinion.

In hopes of avoiding a neverending debate, like the hat Indy wore on the plane in Raiders (which was obviously brown, by the way :Plymouth: ) here are some pics I took off my TV. Not the best quality, but good enough that you can see there is no button. The first pic is the same frame as the photo posted above that makes it look like there is a button (just as a reference). The rest clearly show that there is no button. If you watch the scene as a video (rather than frame by frame) you'll see that the real button is not as awkwardly placed as you might think.

This convinces me and I stand corrected.

Kudos to Mark for raising a question and moving to disprove it again swiftly when uncovering new evidence.

T'was a nice theory though! :)
