My faux pas regarding faux leather
Sorry, I included the e-Bay link to this listing, and the moderators say we can't do that, so lesson learned.
But, if you WERE to go to eBay and typed in a search for:
jacket costume for indiana jones raider
Then you might be taken to a listing for a truly spectacular travesty of an Indy jacket.
$110 bucks (shipping included) for a jacket that looks like it was made from the same naugahyde couch we had in our living room as a kid.
Ahhhhh.... that naugahyde smell...
Don't you guys go runnin' up the bids now!

Considering that the shipping is 30 bucks, and that the jacket is essentially plastic, what do you think it "way cheaper" should be?It's actually not too bad. It should be way cheaper though.
10 bucks? 20 bucks? After paying shipping, it seems that 20 would be the upper limit, although for me if I received it free I would never wear it. Can you imagine how uncomfortable it would be? Like being zipped-up in a Hefty bag.

Excuse me, but isn't the storm flap attached to the wrong side of the jacket, or are the photos flipped?

Re: My faux pas regarding faux leather
Everyone is quick to dismiss the jacket, but consider that one of the Tom Cruise "hero" jackets from War of the Worlds was made from vinyl (specifically for the ferry scene where the jacket is submerged). With a little creativity, wouldn't this be the perfect rainjacket if the details could be addressed?Road Warrior wrote:$110 bucks (shipping included) for a jacket that looks like it was made from the same naugahyde couch we had in our living room as a kid.

I agree with Rick5150. I still think the price should be lowered, and perhaps it should be offered in the states so that shipping is cheaper. If the price was low enough, such as $70 shipped, it may very well be worth it. Comparing the price and Quality to the price and quality of say a wested or G&B, they'd probably rather proportional. Especially if you were to use it as a raincoat, or to go swimming in, or for purely costuming reasons.

Well it isn't going to get cheaper unless it's mass-produced, and it won't be mass produced if:
a) There isn't a ready supply of buyers (which there probably isn't). I just can't envision the pretty much fanatical COW members all of a sudden discovering the wonders of a plastic Indy jacket -- even for 70 bucks.
b) It's made in a cheap labor market (like China or Pakistan, etc.). There goes your low shipping cost, and pretty much any chance of good quality if you want to keep the price down. Plus, you don't get good pricing unless you're doing sufficient production numbers.
As far as costume use, doesn't just about EVERYBODY on this forum already have an Indy jacket? If so, why would they wear a plastic one for a costume? And I doubt that any of you will need one for an underwater scene like the one Rick5150 mentioned. Real Indy jackets made of goatskin or horsehide pretty much solve the rain issue in the first place. Even lamb or cowhide would do okay if they were treated with Pecard's, as long as you didn't wear it day after day in downpours.
So good luck with the quality, somewhat accurate, low cost plastic Indy rain jacket. I'll eat crow if they all of a sudden become popular, but I'm thinking that ain't happening.
My point here - and I am used to it from my site as well - is that we are a very critical bunch. Most of the time this is good, but we also quickly bury a newcomer if they produce something that is not immediately up to our high standards rather than try to work with them to make their offering more accurate - and therefore more valuable to us as customers.
I have had vendors come to my site and actually listen to what we have to say (like they do here most of the time) and improve their products and make them more screen accurate. That is great. We have a few great offerings for the motorcycle jacket that Brad Pitt wore in Fight Club for example (not the familiar red jacket usually associated with the movie.) Manufacturers like Soul Revolver and Magnoli Clothiers have a good ear as well as a great eye for detail. They listen.
We have also had vendors ignore us completely. In the end, it is not all about us though. There may be a market out there for the less "perfect" product. I just hate to see a potential replica get swept under the carpet without giving the manufacturer a chance to be better.
This is only a drastic example. There is probably no need for a vinyl Indy jacket, but if it was accurate enough, you never know.
... just something to think about.

And I was kind of thinking costume purposes for people who are new... people who might not be into indygear so much as indy costumes, people who don't have an indy jacket and don't want to spend $250+ for a jacket just to have. And I must also agree with Rick5150 about the idea of giving these guys a chance and offering help to create a better, even if plastic, jacket.

There's another replica jacket on Ebay (MEN'S NEW INDIANA JONES RACING MOTORBIKE LEATHER JACKET) that's very puzzling. I like this description:
Hmm, I think their great attention to detail leaves something to be desired.Indiana Jones leather jacket
This is an unofficial remake of the popular classic leather jacket from the movie Indiana Jones as worn by Tyler Durden. We have paid great attention to detail to make sure every part matches the original as closely as possible from the colour to the stitching. High quality leather. No jacket comes as close to the original as this.
Might as well share the pics. What do you guys think?Baldwyn wrote:There's another replica jacket on Ebay (MEN'S NEW INDIANA JONES RACING MOTORBIKE LEATHER JACKET) that's very puzzling. I like this description:
