Advice on choosing a Fedora for someone with a tiny head!!!

Post by GeordieIndy »

Hey,

Sorry if this has been covered before and I have missed the thread!

I just measured my head and am a 54 - 55 max, which is a pea size of a head for a guy I know! Ha Ha

Does anyone have any recommendation on choosing a fedora for such a small head. I would really like an AB or AB Deluxe but need as much advice as I can get before forking out the money on something that might not look right on me.

Has anyone ever had to request slightly different size specs to suit their head? I don't want to adjust brim size too much as I have seen some pics where the brim size looks too small.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks,

GeordieIndy

You should probably shoot Steve or Marc an email with a picture of yourself attached for reference when you are ready to make your purchase. That can help them make adjustments to the hat so that it looks right for your head/face size and shape. They will not steer your wrong!

I had exactly the same problem being a size 53 / 54. I got a federation initially but then in truth it was always slightly too big, and that was their smallest size - I also opted to trim the brim of it myself as well

Thne I got a Keppler - I specifically asked Lee to trim the brim as much as he thought he could so it would balance my face.

Same when I ordered my AB I asked Steve to trim it for me. Even then it wasnt quite enough so I sent it to Mark for a bit extra off the sides.

You will nowadays defitley get a hat to fit, but its going to be the brim which will be a little touch and go so you have to be prepared you either need to trim it yourself or get someone else to do so for you - and that of course will be up to you when you see it on your own head.

As Ken said, I can take care of the problem. I also did a custom one for Rabbitooth. Please give me a call at 619-647-6744 and we can discuss it.

You could try Christys', they will make as small as a 54, but you'll have to spec the brim size down if you want it smaller, as far as I can tell they will trim to your specs if you supply them.

They are fairly inexpensive (About $120 incl shipping) so it might be a way to see if you like an Indy hat without paying a lot to start with and they seem to be sending them out pretty promptly.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the help!

Ken, could you please post some pics of your AB Fedora on your head detailing the specs?

I have seen many fedora's on COW and would like to comment on a couple I have recently seen. When looking at McFly's fedora, and with absolutely no disrespect to him, but for me personally I think his brim looks too small for how I would like mine to look. Then looking at recent pics of Mark Brody's AB that he posted, he looks so have a simliar size/shape face to mine and his looks perfect. Like I say this is just my opinion and I mean no disrespect to anyone!!

I really have my heart set on an AB or AB Deluxe with Steve and Marks new lining when I get the funds in the near future, then it's just a case of choosing the Crystal Skull or Raiders stlye fedora, but that's a whole other discussion! Also wanting to get one predistressed giving it a dirty well worn look.

Lee, I recieved your pm, thanks! I have tried to reply 3 times but my message will not send and keeps on coming up with an error report??

If anyone else wants to chip in I would love to hear from you, and especially see pics of fedor's on heads!

Thanks,

Andy

...are you... disrespecting me?!

Just kidding - no, I know mine doesn't have the "Raiders" look. I don't particularly like the size of the Raiders brim, even though I like the shape of it. My brim is actually a LC style brim on a Raiders style crown. My head may not be as small as yours, and I don't know how thin your face is, but my face is pretty thin looking, so a wide brim just doesn't look good, no matter how proportional it is. :?

Here's a better shot of my brim, from a 3/4 view. The picture in my avatar makes it look much much shorter than it is. I'll change it to a better shot.

And here's one straight on (pardon the dorky, over-excited grin!)

For you, I'd say talk to Steve, Marc, or Lee. They can take care of you!!

Hey McFly,

Thanks for popping in! As if I would ever disrespect another COW member! Ha Ha. Everyone on here is really great and so helpful!

By looking at your other pics the brim does look bigger, your profile pic doesn't do your fedora justice!

Thanks for your advice!

McFly- I think the Avatar may be distorting the brim size just from the size of the crop and somewhat the angle and lighting. The other picture shows that it indeed looks fine. :)

I tried to find some photos that show it off from different angles. In truth I still feel my brim is a little wide and think I would prefer it to be a trimmer fit.

I've never really been a big 'spec' guy so just measured it myself as best I can. Other thing to consider is my hat is usually pretty beat up and get squashed and so on regularly so this dimensions and so on probably not reflective of a brand new AB right out of the box. Anyway:

Hat size = 6 5/8

Brim at front = 7cm
Brim at sides = 6cm
Brim at rear = 7cm

Crown height at front = 12cm
Crown height at rear = 10cm

Great discussion fellas, I'm in the same boat. I'm a 54 / 55-ish size. I am in the process of getting my fedora at the moment and now am wondering about a few things myself. My main concern is how the hat will look proportionally to my noggin once I get it. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Ken and McFly, your lids look great. :D

You know I have just the opposite problem, I have a big head but I'm a relatively small guy. I just ordered a Fed 4 and I'm afraid its going to look stupid on me because it will look too big, when in reality its my hat size. I bought a form fitting baseball cap and it looks ridiculous on me because it stands so high up, so now I have to get the formless baseball hats.

Not alone!

Post by GeordieIndy »

Hey,

So I am not alone! I feel so much better now :!: Ha Ha

Ken I think your fedora looks fine, I think you may run this risk if you have the brim trimmed of knocking the proportions all out of sync if you know what I mean. I think the thing is with the Indy fedora the crown is so tall, for us pea heads no matter what we do it is going to look big!

The one thing I read which did really interest me, although I need to speak to Steve or Marc, is with regards to some of the Indy IV fedoras they made. If I am correct Steve or Marc said there were a few with slightly smaller crowns and smaller brims made???? That may sort out my problem straight away if I could get one made with those specs.

And baseball caps, don't get me started!! For years I have always struggled getting baseball caps to look right, I have also ended up getting the formless ones to get them to look good on me!

I really do appreciate all of your help and it's good to know I am not the only one out there having this problem.

Thanks,

Andy

Thanks Venkman, Andy, and mtechthang!

Yeah, I guess I have to find a better picture of my hat then, to use as my avatar. I just liked the pictures I'd been using before - they just don't show off my hat very well.

Yeah, I ordered a Camptown Legend and he doesn't have 54 in that hat, I think...I need to talk to him again. But I believe he is going to be sending me a size 7 with some sizing tape in it. For you folks with experience with your lids, will this look ridiculous on me or do you think it will be fine?
