Last year after some research I decided to remove the liner from my AB. I think most agree the hats are cooler (temp wise) without the liner and I think as a whole we agree the heros hat had the the liner removed in ROTLA, so my AB is that much more SA. We all still see shots of the liner in the other films, and I like the finnished look of the liner but when its hot in the summer having it removed pays off. So I had this thought of trying to make the liner easy in easy out, so it could removed when the hot summer months are here (if they ever come this year ) and replaced during the cooler months . Anybody have any ideas ?

as it happens my dad had a hat many years ago with a removable liner the sweat bans had a thin ridge all the way round right at the bottom and the liner had a hard plastic hoop on the bottom edge you simply pushed it into the hat then tucked it behind the sweat band down to the ridge then it sat in place other than that hat ive never heard of a removable liner but i bet there out there somewhere

Yes, they are a LOT cooler with the liner removed. When cold weather returns, and if I decide to put my summer hat back in winter rotation, I just use a dot of Elmers glue in strategic locations under the sweatband and tack the liner back in the hat. Not a problem.

Good idea ( the glue) any problems with glue build up, or can you just pop the glue dots off the hat as needed ? I had a crazy Idea of sticky back velcro, the little circles ?

Usually overnight. I usually do this before turning in for the night so the hat is ready to go first thing in the morning.

It's also good to use a product like Elmers, as it's water soluable, so if and when you send your hat in for reconditioning, this type glue is completely washed out of the felt leaving no residue.

You don't have to put in SO much glue to have any type of a buildup, by the way. That's WAY to much! Just apply enough of a tiny dot to adhere the liner to, and it's all it needs, as the sweat band will hold it in place.

I don't use anything to hold in the liner once I've removed it. I find that the sweatbandf holds it in just fine. No fuss, no messy glue or sticky tape. Plus, you I don't feel hesitant about pulling it out if we get a warm day in the early or late winter.

I thought the whole point of the liner was to prevent sweat and dirt from getting onto the felt!

That's true, but it has always been common practice to remove the liner in hot weather, or at least it was 'back in the day'.

I've found it's made a hat that I would NEVER consider wearing in the hot humid South to be quite bearable. That liner holds in that much heat!

So, you can leave your nice clean hat in the closet until cooler weather returns, or you can pull out the liner and enjoy your fedora during the hot part of the year, then return the liner for colder weather.

This makes me wonder...

do you think Steve would sell a liner that was a tad longer than usual so it could be hemmed? I think it would be easy to just put in and out with velcro as someone suggested.

The liner on my Keppler comes right out. I don't know why I haven't taken it out seeing as though South Florida weather is "Summer Hot" nearly all year round. I find that the temperature is still bearable even with the liner, but that is just me. I may take it out when the temperature rises even more in the coming months.

I peeled the glued-in liner out of my Akubra adventurer as an experiment. I wore the linerless hat around town in mid to upper 80's humid weather yesterday and it was much more comfortable.

Is there a trick to removing the liner without damage and a way to put it back without wrinkles or fuss???

I just answered my own question for my JPD at least. The liner pulls right out, easily. I imagine it goes back in under the sweat band just as easily.

I've had the liners in and out of several hats for years with no problems.

BUT, since I wear them while working outdoors, I do have a couple of those hats that have now developed sweat stains in places that might have been prevented if the liners had not been removed. Maybe in the long-run it just goes to "distressing", but it might be wise to be cautious with your #1 hat.

This probably goes towards the old practice of having a good hat, an everyday hat and your weekend/cottage/yard-work/huntin' lodge/fishing hat.

I'm still debating whether or not to take mine out. In the AB Delux, he sewed in the liner.
Do you just pop the stitches then pull it out?
Is it hard to get it back in the way it was originally?
Does anyone here "sew" it back in?
Has anyone actually done the "velcro" idea? It does sound like it would work.

I have a couple of straw hats that I normally wear for the summer months, but it would be nice to have an "easy" way of taking the liner out of my ABD, and an "easy" way of restoring it back to the way it came without hurting/wrinkling either the liner or the hat itself.

Hmmmm, maybe I'll wait until I get my AB from Steve for an "everyday/weekend/cottage/yard-work/huntin' lodge/fishing hat" and keep the ABD for a good hat.

Well I was just about town and watering my garden with the liner out. I can tell you first hand what a difference it makes. So much cooler that I feel I can wear my fedoras without liners all summer and just re tuck them under the sweat band for cooler temps. My hat even feels lighter and barely noticeable on my head. I forget it's even there it's that comfy.

My AB had an unfortunate accident last August, when about a liter of Pepsi (with ice) landed inside of it. I cut the stitches of the liner to remove it. Bink was kind enough to give me a new liner, which I just layed back in and tucked under the sweatband. No restitching, no glue, no tape. Looks like new, feels like new. And now, if I get too hot, I just pull the liner out and slip it into my MK bag! Hey, maybe that's why Indy had that bag!! :!:

I think tucking it in under the sweat band would work in most cases. I cannot because I folded the sweat in half to help with the SOC look, so now the liner is just a little to short to be held in securely. I think im going to have to choose between the glue or the velcro dots , my only concern with the velcro is they might print on the outside of the hat after a while. Im sure if that does happen it is fixable , and they would have to be replaced after a cleaning or reblock but thats not a big deal.
