Sleeve Length...

Post by DoubleOhSeven »

I read somewhere that the sleeves on Wested's off-the-peg jackets run kinda short...anyone know?

I think someone was selling a size 40 because the sleeves were too short, they were like the size of a 40S instead of a 40R. I'm wondering if I should order a 42 to compensate?

To tell the truth, I want to order a custom jacket, but I am scared to death to do so after reading some of the horror stories that have been posted here about 1st-time custom orders. I certainly don't want to invest additional hundreds of dollars sending a jacket back and forth to England for alterations.

I don't know about their off-the-peg jackets, but I think if you just go to a Men's Wearhouse or some other place that sells suits, and get measured for a jacket, you'll be fine to get a custom one. Or just have a friend measure you - they give pretty good instructions on their site, IIRC.

My off the peg Wested has rather long sleeves, but it works for me since I have fairly long arms.

Cheers!

I've got no complaints about the sleeve length on my Wested "special offer" which is an off the rack jacket. It's a 40"

I ordered a custom done in horsehide, and Wested nailed it. Fits me exactly the way i wanted it to.

I like an extra inch added to the sleeves. They ride up about that far after they have been worn for a day or 2 the way the sleeves crease and wrinkle up. It's also real easy to adjust barrel cuffs yourself.

That's interesting. I've had many, many leather jackets - I've never had a sleeve rid up with wear...

CM, what I'm talking about is how the sleeve creased and wrinkles up where your arm bends. Those ripples and creases pull the sleeves up a bit from their original, not wrinkled state. Kind of an accordian effect, if that makes sense.

I have a Wested Raiders lambskin on order. I measured the sleeve length for my order from the sleeves on my denim Wested which I had shortened.

When I placed my order, Gemma said that the measurement looked "rather short". I took the measurement from the shoulder seam to the cuff which rests on the first knuckle of my thumb.

It's only one inch shorter than my actual arm measurement which I measured from the point on my shoulder to my wrist, but the shoulder seam on my jacket hangs an inch lower than the point on my shoulder.

I informed Gemma that a quarter to half inch could be added to compensate for any wrinkiling.

Should I have given my actual arm length as my sleeve length? I don't want the sleeves to come out too short.

Sleeve length should be measured to the first knuckle of the thumb. If you've measured to the wrist you are already at least 2" too short. I would measure again, and add at least 1/2" to compensate for wrinkling.

If I measure my arm length from the point on my shoulder to the first knuckle of my thumb, and the sleeve length is measured from the shoulder seam, which hangs lower than the point on my shoulder, won't the sleeve length be too long?

The online order form asks for sleeve length which I thought was different from arm length.

Did I give them the wrong measurement?

I was hoping that the pattern for the denim Wested was the same for the Raiders jacket and that the sleeve measurements I gave them would be accurate.

Hopefully, it's not too late to call Gemma and find out exactly what measurements Peter needs.

Better to err slightly on the side of too long than too short. If it appears too long wear it a little and wait for the sleeves to wrinkle and then decide if they are too long. You can then get them shortened locally if need be.
