That was my best pseudo Doctor Frankenstein impersonation. Any ways I got home from work today and there at my doorstep is a box from Australia. :D My Fed has arrived. I am going to spend all night bashing it. Below are the pics of my treasure. I’ll post images of it once it’s completed. I feel like a kid at Christmas right now…

if you have a chance, could you post another pic of the ribbon...it didn't look like akubra's regular offering but then it may just be the angle.

What kinda shape was the box in? Mine had a hole in the top like someone booted it, I wish they would double box I'd pay extra if they did.
Mine way pretty stiff so I had to use steam.
Bob.

My box was not damaged but the hat had a dent on the side of it. Either way I crumpled the hat so I would be scared of bashing it. It's rather durable :D

Alright, Erin! First of all, does it fit? I know they suggest trying it on to ensure the fit before bashing it. Once it's bashed, I'm not sure what their return/echange policy is since it's no longer pristine at that point. Still, isn't a great feeling to see a brand new hat arrive at your doorstep?

Yeah, I'm actually amazed how good it feels. I've been waiting for this day since I was 7. :D That was more than a quarter century ago...

And yeah, I tried it on. I was worried it would be to big but after I put the foam filler in it, fits like a glove. A beautiful felty glove, with sprinkles...

They've updated the bow...granted it's still not 100%, dead-on screen accurate, but it's a LOT better than the previous version, in my opinion. The new design, with the larger center knot, seems much more balanced and, well, Indyish. I like what I see. 8)

Hey...hat looks great. I know i might open up a can of worms here but its funny because the hat looks kinda grey in some of those pics. Maybe its just me... Anyway the shape is awesome and its kool that you posted the before and afters....appreciate that.

Also i just noticed you are from Murfreesboro, TN. My youngest brother is from there...that's right...a starving musician. Ever hear of "Luke Pruitt and the Doghouse" by chance?

I think it must be some kind of postal policy to damage hat boxes. My PB custom box arrived a little beat up also!

It must be their standard practice because the same thing happened to my Camptown -- and just about every other thing I have ever had dispatched via the P.O. That's all right. When I get ahold of the Ark, I'm going to bring it to the nearest Post Office, close my eyes, and ask them to take a peek inside.
Cheers,
Chaos

EDIT: The hat looks fantastic by the way. Sorry I got all caught up imagining myself exacting revenge upon the Post Office.

gcr....i was going to say the same thing about the ribbon. its a good step towards the SA camp but still distinguishes itself as an akubra.

erin, i like the distinct lines you've made on the crown. she looks great on you. enjoy :D

I believe it’s the lighting because it is definitely brown. Also, I don’t keep up with all the local bands like I use too. College was real fun… but I will keep a look out to see if I see his band. The usual place for a band to play in town is the Boro Bar and Grill.

And thanks to everyone for the comments. :D I really happy with the way it turned out. :D  I just have one issue with it. It seems to me that the brim is over sized. Any comments or suggestions? I don’t want to end up cutting it too short. Am I imagining this?

Erin ordered his after me, but I'm still waiting. No fair.

By the way, for those frustrated at hat colours, and how they seem to always look different, I am currently working on something which might help.

Erin,
The brim looks fine to me. Great looking hat. I noticed on the side view, the bow looks far back - almost like you put a reverse turn in it. :)

What is the technique to get that look?

Hopefully that look, is a good look. I quite like it.

As far as how I got it to look this way... it's rather technical.

I got the hat right out of the box, tried it on, took it off and smashed it into a little ball. After I did that I realized I wouldn't be too scared bashing in the top because I had already ruined any chance of getting my money back.

I then put in the making of Raiders DVD, watched it and kept getting it to the look I desired then smashing it again. I did that about 3 times in total. My wife freaked when I did it in front of her. I referenced Todd’s website for angles on the Cairo style, I just couldn’t do the height issue with the front. It made my head look like Abe Lincolns. So I toyed around with it. I'm sure I broke a few cardinal sins in doing so.

I wanted a really tight Cairo pinch in the front so after I pinched it I misted it with a little water and put a small potato chip clip over the crease for a few minutes. The rest is still a work in progress. I hope that helped.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to get a closer Indy Raider’s look?

Congats!!! The bash looks great. Very unique.

I love the look of an unbashed, open crown hat. Makes me start rubbing my hands together and licking my lips.

Absolutely love this angle.

Yeah, I was a little thrown off about how far back the bow was, but... you know what, I think it works fine. I dig it.

And thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement. I was a little tepid about posting the bash. I am still green to this entire family but you all know how to make someone welcome. And Fatwoul, I so wish you would have gotten yours first, that way I would have had someone to get the greasy details from. Once I get my bash settled I'll post another set of pics of my lid in all its glory.

...oh yeah, I came this close to buying a shirt from Todd's today. (Thank the Lord for the search option) Money's tight right now so I'll probably get a store bought for now.

DO NOT cut the brim.
If your facial features were smaller or you had a tapered jawline i'd say maybe.
In this case, NO. The hat's brim is perfectly proportionate to your face and head. I really believe that any alteration to the brim at this point will only spoil what already works well.

I, on the other hand, do have a narrow chin and smaller features in my face, but that's not to say I haven't ruined several hats by getting scissor-happy with the brim.

...and believe me, I have ruined a few.

ALL my current hats have an uncut brim and they all look just right!

c_a brings up a good point, Erin. If it looks good on you as is, no reason to cut the brim. I cut the brim of my Akubra, but it was after a LOT of thinking. I wore the hat without cutting the brim for a good handful of weeks (if not more) to see if it grew on me or if I had issue with the brim. When I did decide to cut the brim — again, after MUCH thought — I cut carefully and only a 16th of an inch at a time. It's always easy to cut more, but impossible to add it back. If you DO decide to cut the brim, cut to the outside of your chalk line and start by cutting just a little. Then wear it that way for a while before deciding to cut down any further. It's easy to want to get ambitious, so best to tread lightly, as it were. But I agree with the ape, the brim looks good on you as is.

I think I'll wait on any cut for the foreseeable future. I just have to get use to wearing the hat and seeing myself in it.

You know its funny, I was at work today and saw a few people wearing cowboy hats (I work at a VA Hospital). It seems to me that it is acceptable, even commonplace, to see a hat like that. But a Fedora, a Fedora is a rarity. And I have to ask why? A gentleman's hat should be more common place than a Cowboy's hat. I mean really, when was the last time you saw a shoot out between a group of Cherokee Indians and the local law enforcement?

Nice job Erin Jones. Bashing looks great. I think the answer to your question is that cowboy hats never really went out of style or perhaps these people really are cowboys. I really believe this all relates to geography. I got a cowboy hat at the state fair in Montana. Fit right in. But then I flew back to Toronto. By the time I got to Chicago - I was really out of place and the security guys were calling me Tex.
