These whips that I make are made from Nylon paracord, which makes them very durable and able to last a long time. I use the practices and techniques that whipmaker Bernie Wojocicki uses but in Nylon insted of very expensive kangaroo leather. I have never used a leather whip before but have been told by many that they have very similar charistics to leather whips in weight and how they preform. Hope that helps a bit. Thanks James

I have made other whips that I have dropped more strands at the end making it a little smaller, these whips are 16plait and go down to 8 at the end to try to keep with the indy style. I can only get the nylon para cord so tight at the end. If you have any sugestions I would be glad to hear it knowing you also make whips. Thanks James

Welcome to Indy gear James. I am not normally a big aficionado of nylon whips for sport cracking but that’s a nice looking bullwhip. It’s clear that you can plait. I agree with Adam though, I like to see a finer taper with the thong thinning more towards the point and a smoother transition to a “fall” and popper area, it usually makes for a better performing whip. Take a look at Krist King’s or Rett Kelly’s work, they are both some of the top whip makers specializing in nylon and make very impressive whips. If you can get yourself a high quality kangaroo hide bullwhip or even try one out that has been made by a well-recognized whip maker, do it! Nylon bullwhips, even the best of them are hard pressed to compare to a expertly made Roo hide whip, and once you get a feel for how a whip like that throws and cracks you’ll be able to incorporate that into building your own whips. Not to say anything against yours its just one thing to be able to plait, its another to know how to make a really well balanced whip especially with out formal hands on training or with out a lot of experience in knowing how a whip is supposed to feel.

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been making whips? How many bellies do you use with these? Do you shot load your bullwhips, or wax them before sending them out? Are you going for screen accuracy on these or just making a general Indy style bullwhip? Because the Indy bullwhips are actually 12-plait ending in a 6-plait point, not 16 ending in an 8. The Indy bulls also use a 5 part 4 bight knot turkshead butt knot.

In any case good luck with your run on these. There are several other established whip makers making these style of nylon Indy whips to order for around the same price or for less so I am not sure how you’ll do with getting folks here to sign up, but you might also want to post a notice in the classified area of Club Obi Wan to get the attention of those who may be interested but don’t normally view the bullwhip section. I was lucky enough to get in on a run by RPF'er Earpick, of Indiana Jones style 16 plait whips. I, myself purchased a 10 foot version in dark brown nylon. Throughout the project we received frequent and detailed updates and the turn around time was surprisingly fast.

I received the whip today and of course had to go out and try it. I've had whips before, but mainly just cheapy leather ones that I could pick up south of the border (one of these is what I was using for my display and it was so innacurate it kept bothering me). Well, when I cracked this sucker, I actually felt fear as well as exhilaration! The sound this thing makes....well this is the sound that will make Egyptian sword-bearing assassins back right up! No joke!

He even included a CD with a video on the care and maintenance of the whip and a brief lesson on how to crack it.

James, I can't thank you enough! You're a credit to the hobby!

Here's the whip in the left half my display, which is at last complete!

I begin each whip with an 8 inch steel handle, attached to it is a piece of hollow 450 nylon para cord which I fill with BB's. This gives the whip weight and allows me something to plait over. I then use a 6 plait around the whips core, which is then followed by a 8 plait. The final overlay of the whip is a 16 plait. I use hollow 450 nylon para cord in the construction of my whips and bind them in the handle to thong transition (this prevents the whip from whiping like a noodle) Some makers of nylon whips when finished dip them in wax to protect them, I feel no need to do so because nylon is a material that best kept if it is able to breath.

The reason that I do my whips in runs is because I do not do this full time, I order my materials after people sign up knowing how much material I need and I buy it in bulk for a cheaper price. If I were to order the material when i got orders the price of the whips would be higher. I don't have the money to keep my self stocked with material (College Student). Thanks Again All James

Indiana Ripper, I’m guessing whoever got that clear idol, got it from immaculate conceptions Inc. www.geocities.com/imconprops/ They do, or at least at on time did really nice clear resin idols. I have one of their gold idols and although it’s the frowning sculpt, its on of the nicest casts I’ve seen. It’s also a dead ringer for the one in the Archives book. Now get back on topic

Nice work Nylon whips,, do you do shorter handles as well?iits more indy style, 8'' I to learned under Bernie, he has an Awesome instructional way of teaching,, via his DVDs or Cds wich I have,, the knots are what threw me for a loop for a while, then he came out with a knot teaching dvd/cd. Sweet!

I also love Ron edwards books,
All the best with the nylon, I use cowhide myself and have got acustom to it, more so than roo, but I still love a good roo hide bullwhip as well.

Never get tired of those Winrich whips, hahhaha and Stenhouse's

The handle in the whip pictures is 8in. That was one of the first indy style whips that I made and took pictures of, I now make my whips with the top knot moved down a bit and the whips look closer to the indy style of whip. hey james.
The heel knot on a Indy whip is a 5 part 4 bight turks head, as is the ring knot at the end of the handle. While its not screen accurate, you would probably need 4 passes with paracord on the knot to cover the knob. I believe the wrist strap is 6 strands. Someone correct me if im wrong.

Hey James, nice looking whip! Adam's right on the money about the knot specs. Depending on how big the foundation for the heel knot is, you might have to do 4 passes. That's one thing about paracord, you're pretty limited to a certain size. But the pic you have up there with the 7x6 knot is how Joe Strain makes them for Western Stage Props, so you're not in bad company there. Personally, I like the 7x6 turk's, it just has a tighter look to it, if that makes sense. Anyway, good luck!

What fall style do you guys like better the single strand para cord fall or the twisted para cord fall. The twisted fall attaches like a more traditional leather fall and I feel it is a little bit more solid but what do you guys think would be more indy like and provide the best quality. Thank James

Looking good James, the new style of handle looks really has the Indy look to it. I agree with ITG, I think the twisted nylon paracord falls look and more importantly work better on a nylon whip. I’d go with that one.

Twisted! Hey, my friend, have you ever given any thought to sending one of your whips around to the whip makers on COW here, have them review it, send it back, and then you send it to another? That way(since you are a new whip maker here

) ) some of the 'old pros' can either give you some tips(if needed) or give their support for your product.

Just a thought,,not that I'm too worried, that newest style you got goin' looks great! (it's just hard to tell how they handle by pics

)

I have been working on more features of the whips to make them more indy like, and I have moved to change the wrist strap. I have never been happy with the old wrist strap because it was always real limp looking and did not look right, but with some reworking I got the look and feel that I am now happy with. Sorry I have been taking so long for those who have signed up for a whip but I want you to have the best looking and working indy style whip out of nylon para cord. I will post a picture later today of the whole whip with all the changes I have made. James
