I just pulled my bag out for a canoe trip and discovered one of the snaps has disappeared! I have no idea where or when it happened but I need to know how to replace or repair it. Any help?

Well,I figured out how to fix it. Took the bag to my leather guy and had him put two new snaps on it. Theyre a hair smaller than the originals , but, hey it works!

I take it your bag had the flat ones and not the patterned Newey ones, then?
They are a bit harder to find it seems...

The buttons were the ones with the dimpled patten on them but I kind of like the plain old brass buttons better .

Replacement Newey snaps to the original specifications are available from www.1944airbornecom. You can easily fit them yourself.

Alan;

Yeah, Soldier OF Fortune. Are you sure they have the correct ones now? Last time I asked a year or so ago they only had the green ones and some other brass ones that weren't the same as the dimpled ones.

Let me know, I'd need a couple for my Mk VI bag. ;)

Newey snaps

The green caps (intended for Denison smock replcement) are just the same as the smooth brass type, but painted. I spot of Nitromors will do the job.

If you want a wrinkled replacement, in the past I have combined the cap from a Bundeswehr parka with a Newey base. OK, one's metric and the other is Imperial, but they aren't a mile out and it works. They aren't brass though, so you have to do the dull version. I suppose you could try some of that high quality brass paint that model makers use.

I've done this on other '37 Pattern gear - it's hardly worth it on a Mark VII as they are common.

Thanks for the info, Alan.
Have you seen the wrinkled ones on any other stuff other than the respirator bags from 1942 and backwards?

Wrinkled snaps

Bright brass wrinkled snaps are common on item of '37 Pattern webbing, of course. Come to think about it, I thinkthe only dull wrinked snaps I've seen are on respirator cases. i wonder why that is? Were then once bright and have dulled through corrosion? It doesn't look like it. More likely the bright ones are brass plated (I haven't cut one up to check) and the ones on 'gas mask bags' weren't treated for cheapness. The gas mask bag wasn't an item of parade equipment, of course, so standards were possibly lower and different contractors were certainly used. Just a thought.

Compared to the Canadian bag the British one is pretty dull;

Of course, these are only two bags compared but I think I see your point. Seems like te Canadian equivalent had more copper in it aswell.

Thanks for putting up with all the Q's, but this is almost like striking gold in a mine to me. ;)

My snap also popped off my WPG replica bag, if I can't get one from them, is there any place I can get snaps in the US?
