Bag Dilema
I just pulled my bag out for a canoe trip and discovered one of the snaps has disappeared! I have no idea where or when it happened but I need to know how to replace or repair it. Any help?

Mark VI and VII bags snaps
Replacement Newey snaps to the original specifications are available from www.1944airbornecom. You can easily fit them yourself.

Newey snaps

The green caps (intended for Denison smock replcement) are just the same as the smooth brass type, but painted. I spot of Nitromors will do the job.
If you want a wrinkled replacement, in the past I have combined the cap from a Bundeswehr parka with a Newey base. OK, one's metric and the other is Imperial, but they aren't a mile out and it works. They aren't brass though, so you have to do the dull version. I suppose you could try some of that high quality brass paint that model makers use.
I've done this on other '37 Pattern gear - it's hardly worth it on a Mark VII as they are common.

Wrinkled snaps

Bright brass wrinkled snaps are common on item of '37 Pattern webbing, of course. Come to think about it, I thinkthe only dull wrinked snaps I've seen are on respirator cases. i wonder why that is? Were then once bright and have dulled through corrosion? It doesn't look like it. More likely the bright ones are brass plated (I haven't cut one up to check) and the ones on 'gas mask bags' weren't treated for cheapness. The gas mask bag wasn't an item of parade equipment, of course, so standards were possibly lower and different contractors were certainly used. Just a thought.

Compared to the Canadian bag the British one is pretty dull;
Of course, these are only two bags compared but I think I see your point. Seems like te Canadian equivalent had more copper in it aswell.
Thanks for putting up with all the Q's, but this is almost like striking gold in a mine to me.
Regards,
Swindiana

WPG bag snap
My snap also popped off my WPG replica bag, if I can't get one from them, is there any place I can get snaps in the US?
