Best cheap bullwhip

Post by Kodiak »

I've looked around at the IOAB, but I can't seem to find any other whip that looks decent for a decent price. I'd like to pay around 100 dollars for it, but I'm willing to put in a little more if it's a high plait. I'd like one to be about nine feet, but I would probably round down to eight for accuracy if the nine-foot isn't available (that length seems to be fairly rare). And if anybody will make me one cheap, PM away amigos.

Jim "RacerX" Jarrell makes a nifty, low-cost 8 plait bullwhip for about $50-75 dollars. My first usable Aussie-styled whip was one from Jim, (the style then called the "Ugly Duckling." To quote another character played by our beloved Indy Actor, "She may not be much to look at, Kid, but she's got it where it counts.")

Standard on those prices is about 6 foot, but you can talk to Jim and see what you can work out.

On top of that, you can also pick up a pretty darn nice shot loaded nylon whip from Western Stage Props.

http://www.westernstageprops.com/miva/m ... y_Code=WNW

I'm not sure on the maker, but I believe it's Tim Bass, who makes some of the nicest nylon whips around, (in my not so humble opinion.) I've thrown around an 8 foot one of these now, and I was pretty darned impressed. Really liked it. Was a little heavy for my taste, (the shot loading is sorta necessary to carry the weight out through the nylon thong,) but it rolled out nice and was fairly accurate, (was making it do stuff that amazed the guy who bought it, so I'm getting a six footer of the same kind to keep in the car for dealing with dogs and cows that sit in the road out where I live.)

One big thing though. You're looking for cheap. I'm telling you where to get a GOOD whip that throws and handles similarly to their more expensive kangaroo cousins. And these whips actually look good too, but they don't necessarily look like Indiana Jones whips. If you're after a cheap whip that throws well AND looks like Indy's whip, the IAOB is your best bet.

Good luck!

Kodiak,

FYI, I also make 8-plait cowhide bullwhips for $15 per foot plus $10 for the wrist loop. I can make you a 9 footer for $145, or an 8 footer for $130. They are a pretty good deal, and don't cost much more than the IOAB whips.

End of shameless plug

Kind Regards,

The IOAB is 4-plait, right?

Adam, could you do a nine-footer, maybe with a 10-plait?

Yep, Gio whips are a close replica of the 80's morgan style whips and they go for:

$96-97 for 8ft for his LR (Little Raider) which is 6 plait.

you can have a look at this viewtopic.php?t=16937&start=0&postdays= ... highlight=

His shipping prices are good also for out of Europe, have a look at his website http://giowhips.myray.org/

Hi Kodiak,

I spoke to Adam today, and he is already in Oklahoma, and he doesn't have any internet access right now. Or at least until I get down there tomorrow night with the laptop.

I'm sure he could do a nine-footer, but I have to ask why a 10 plait?

Why a 10-plait?

I don't know... my current whip is junk, and I want something decent. That's pretty much the gist of it.

Thanks for working with me,

Hey Kodiak,

Then I suggest either an 8 plait or a 12 plait, cus 10 plait is an odd number plait when you divide it by two sides you gotta divide 5 by two. If your gonna spend the money either go 8 or 12 plait, they both look indyesque. But as a whipmaker I just wouldn't like the idea of doing a 10 plait whip. Just my opinion, from a sleep deprived, been in a car all day whipmaker.

Thanks for the enlightenment . I have very little knowledge when it comes to building a whip. I don't think I want to pay for a 12 plait, so the 8 sounds good. Thanks for the help...
