Wested got drenched

Post by Strider »

The other night, I was wearing my lamb wested and got caught in a downpour that came out of nowhere with no umbrella. Is this bad? Recommendations? I let it dry, and the leather doesn't really feel the same way it did. Kind of rough.

How about Pecarding it?

It's probably just stiffened a bit. Wear it and it'll soon recover. My goat got drenched as well and also felt tightened up - it soon softened again with wear and looked better for it too!

Hey Strider,

I have drenched many a leather jacket in my day, so yes a coating of Pecard's and wear the heck out of it and it will be right back where it was. No worries
Cheers,

This is a great thing. Give it a light layer of Pecard's and just wear it. It will soften right back up again, but it will even look better than before. Water slightly swells the leather and gives it a particular look that is very Raider-esque. Congratulations, is what I say.

Can't add much more than the reason the leather feels 'funky' now is once it has completely dried, most if not all of the moisture suspended in the hide has also evaporated due to the jacket swelling, then relaxing again with the evaporation/removal of all suspended moisture. Once a light coating of Pecards is applied, it replaces that lost moisture, and the jacket revitalized.

No harm done at all. Just make absolutely sure it's completely air dried before applying any leather treatement.

Regards! Michaelson

wested wear

I got stuck in a downpour with my Wested too. Stayed out in the rain for an hour or so watching my sons football game. It was a little damp when I got home but it looks just fine now. I may get some dressing to clean it up later but figured what a better way to wheather the jacket than using the wheather.

Strider - no worries. I've gotten my lamb soaked several times now. (ONCE it was so wet that either the jacket or liner bled onto the shoulders of the shirt I was wearing. But that was an EXTREME occassion, I'd been out for HOURS in that real soaker we had end of Dec/beg of Jan.)

Regardless, I've always just put it over the back of a chair and worn it the next day, and it's fine. No moss (er, mildew) or smells, and the folks above are right - it's getting more of that random variation to the surface that marks it as a well-used and well-loved jacket. ;)

(Whoa, something else those pics are good for - look how far the brim flies up in the back against the wind - good floppy brim! And now back to the jacket thread...)

Good captures - in one shot you have both the lighter marks against the dark leather, but also w/ the reflection of the sunlight you can see that those lighter marks are all significant damage. Great reference pic, Tone!

Boy, do I feel better. Look at the back of that jacket, it looks "clawed" like my Wested did before I fixed it up a bit. You can see some scratch marks on my jacket still that I'll never get rid of, but seeing that pic makes me feel a lot better.

I've been wearing mine at the Post Office where all the mail to and from Las Vegas goes. If I don't wear it it either gets thrown on the ground or on a concrete pole. I think I may have to get another so I can have a wheathered one and a going out semi-casual one for when we go out to dinner. Great pix of the jacket. It does have a bit of sheen to it. I almost took some chemicals to take the sheen down. Glad I saw this post and those great pix. Now to dig in the garage and find that wire brush. 8)

I laid my Wested goat skin flat until it dried so I wouldn't get any stretch out of it then I Pecard's it twice with a light buff both times...
Worked a treat..
