I'm curious if there are any crack addicts in or near Northern Indiana. I'd love to meet up with some fellow (and more experienced) whip enthusiasts who might be able to teach me a couple things (I have the circus crack down, but that's it). More importantly, I'd just love to hang out with and meet some fellow gearheads. Am I all alone out here?

What part of northern Indiana? I'm in the Detroit, Mi area. I know it's not exactly close. This goes out to anyone in the area also. I can show ya all the basic cracks. Also, I highly recommend Paul stenhouse's dvd. My whiphandling skills increased 100% after viewing it. I also recommend it for the maintanance part because it includes things you will HAVE to do if you're going to take up whipcracking.

I'm in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which is probably right in the middle of both of you! I've viewed a couple of online tutorials, but I always learn best with someone to show me as I do it. Besides, a DVD can't necessarily tell you what you're doing wrong as you attempt these cracks, you know?

Sometime in the warmer weather sounds good to me if we can work something out sometime. I got a feeling it would be a little more enjoyable in April or May than oh, say the middle of January. If we can find some middleground for all of us to meet we can make it work. Binkmeister, I might be in Indianapolis in April for the Star Wars Celebration, so there's a possibility right there.

I know Axel Wirght has moved to Alabama, but not sure about any of the others.
Bink, you can always tell if you are cracking a whip correctly with two indicators.
1. It makes a loud report like a gun and,
2. It doesn't hit you on the back, legs, arms, ears, etc., etc.

Seriously, as you are practising, use a mirror, or a window where you get a good reflection. Then practise cracking slloooowly. Don't try to get that big crack everytime. If you work on slow and just get the cracker to pop at the end, then you can see where the whip is going and train yourself to get it there every time. Then you can speed it up a bit and get those sharp reports.
If you have the circus crack (aka - Cattleman's) you can then learn to do the reverse Cattleman's. When you make that crack to the front, continue with the follow through sweeping your arm down and to the rear bringing the thong to the rear and continue up letting it sweep to the front. When it is parallel to the ground, reverse your hand and make the crack happen behind you. Then continue the follow through and do it to the front again. By keeping a stready rythum, you can do do this indefinately. And then when you put them together - one crack to the front and one to the rear, it is called the "Figure 8". Just break the crack into components and then put them together.
And as the Travelocity Traveling Gnome says, "Dont forget your hat!"

Yeah, I haven't hit myself in the butt in a long time, so I'm getting better in that regard! 
I'm also getting more consistant with cracking as of a couple days ago. I think it's a good idea to "slow it down" and in fact I'll do that from time to time just to make sure my form is consistant. I'll have to try the reverse cattleman's crack, though I'd love to see what it looks like before I revert to hitting my legs again. 
As for the whip groups, I was hoping to meet up with gearheads simply because of wanting to meet some people I "know." I feel a bit akward contacting folks I've never had any sort of report with. Who knows, maybe I'll give it a looking up.
Oh, and I ALWAYS wear my hat!

Hey R. Deckard, This is my first post, but it quite intrigued me to learn that someone so close is whipcrackin in the area. I'm just south of the Motor City and have been crackin for some twenty years now. It would be great if we could put something together this summer with some of our neighbor states and share some technique. I'm all for it!
Currently I own a 10' Morgan, 2 10' Terry Jacka's, a WSP nylon, and my favorite is an 8' Lone Star by Joe Stain which handles like Mustang GT.
