PH, my rabbit hat exhibits more of a 'reddish' tone which you can compare to the raiders hat in the raven bar scenes. the beaver is more of a softer brown with no red undertones to it.

Cool! :D

Thanks for info on the difference between color of the hats.

And both are supposed to be identical in color!!! But I see this alot, the variation in browns from the beaver to the rabbit. I think the rabbit must absorb the dye differently or something. I am curious how this rabbit will hold up compared to the other rabbit hats out there. I guess time will tell. Fedora

Fedora wrote:Some advice that most already know about......never store your hat sitting on the brim. This will make most soft hats taper, and you don't want the felt to remember that. I always place my hats on a surface, on the crown. Never on the brim.
I remember hearing you say that quite a while ago, Steve, but I have to admit, I just put my hat down upside down naturally. Comes from having children, maybe, seems like the 'clean spaces' where I could put it down are getting smaller and smaller all the time...

...'sides, my hat makes a nice valet, in goes my watch, my wallet, etc...so that center dent never gets too deep, heck, it often gets popped out at night.

BUT...I have noticed a distinct flattening of the tops of the humps (the humps that run lengthwise along the top of the crown on the left and right sides. Any advice on that, is it a problem? The hat still looks good to me on my head, so I'm not too concerned, but I thought I'd ask.

(After a year and a half of nearly daily wear - and much of it not too kind - I notice minor relaxing, but only barely. And it's been beaten enough that I had to sew back on the ribbon, the liner is floating loose, and it's about time I thought about tacking in the sweat again before it comes loose. (But I still keep your 'heck no' card folded up in the sweat behind the ribbon. ;) ) With all this abuse it hasn't got a noticeable taper. So if that makes sense at all as a single data point, then yeah, this hat is treated unkindly, but I leave it upside down at night, and there's barely a taper started.)

Well, what I do with mine is I store it on this cone thingy that came with my Akubra Federation. It's kind of like a mannequin head sort of thing. The Akubra is in its box, and the AB sits out on the doohickey, and the brim doesn't touch the counter top. This is okay, right?

Edit: I made a primitive drawing in paint of what this thing looks like.

I've done what Strider does, but you can also get a plastic hat stand from noggintops.com that's just right. Putting the hat on it's crown is ok, but if it's always weighted down with stuff inside, that might be your problem with the humps. The hat stand has a basket in the middle that could be your caddy, while the hat never touches the table (clean or not) - problem solved!

Thanks, good suggestion. But I'm not actually looking for something to hang it on...right now I can put it down anywhere, it doesn't need it's 'crib'. ;) And keeping it upside was Steve's advice, so I'm happy doing that.

Just wondering if the flattening could become in some unforseen way a detriment to the hat.

Why not refresh this thread with a new pic? Here's my beaver AB, almost one year old (it will be a year old the day before comic con LOL), no reblock, and certainly had the crud worn out of it!

GCR - that hat looks great! I love the mushroom shape it's got - probably from the sitting? I've never had the courage to sit on my AB... don't know why. It kind of scares me. Good stuff!

Thanks, Croft! I don't baby that hat at all. I've sat on it, had it accidentally crushed, had it absolutely soaked in downpours, sweat right through the ribbon, etc., etc. Fedora would be proud of what that hat's taken like a champ.

His list of hats to make for fans is SO big, and since he's a one-man operation who makes his hats 100% by hand, the best thing to do is be patient. It will be worth the wait, since his hats are of the upmost quality. My recommendation is to "forget about it" and be surprised when it arrives on your doorstep.

I don't actually have a clue. I know I asked Steve for a bash, but can't remember. I try and keep the thing symmetrical.

I ordered mine a bit over 8 months ago, so one month after I get mine. 8) The guys who ordered a month before me got theirs in April, so... Steve's a _bit_ busy at the moment. ;)

I ordered mine over 6 months ago, but want to chime in a little, so we don't upset anyone, ie, Steve.
In my opinion, this has to be one of the single most popular and sought after pieces of Indy Gear to be made available EVER. Not to mention the fact that it is such a darn high quality piece of gear. Am I bothered by the fact that there is a long waiting list? Am I upset that we are waiting 6,7,8 months or more? Of course not!! When I ordered mine, the wait time was at least 6 months, and Steve told me to plan on at least that long. I told him it is not a problem. So Steve, please know we are not complaining or unhappy about the wait time. This hat is just such a great piece of gear, that we are all giddy with exitement about getting it. Thank you.

I wouldn't think you should have to wait much longer. Steve had a large order he just completed and, if you saw his post in the vendor section, said all hats ordered prior to around July 20 should be completed by the end of the year.

I've been waiting a month and a half now, so I have a loong way to go probably. But the wait is half the fun, right?

I'm going to order my ABD in september. In your experience how long does it usually take to get after you order a ABD and how long for a re-block from fedora?

It takes as long as it takes. That's the best I can tell ya. Honest.

I've read that it's about a 4-6 month wait for an ABD.
