As far as getting that nasty smell out of the MK VII's, you can try a variety of ways, a lot of people say washing the bag works great, I used febreeze on mine and left it outside for a while, like days on end. Put it out in the sun. I think washing it is probably what I should have done.

I have febreezed the heck out of them, and left them in the sun for at least 12 hours, and its 95% gone on the outside, but inside is much harder to get rid of the smell. Its the worst too, because everything you put it, starts to get the smell a little. I even tried the newspaper trick for a week! Ah well, using them whenever I go out on a hike, or travelling will help even more. There is a difference just from a few hikes so far. Thanks for the nice comments as well guys!

Whipwarrier, glad you like your stuff. Wade really does have the best straps and belts out there.

The couple I've had I've washed. It gets rid of the smell and the build up of grime of all those years. You can take care and be gentle. I put mine in the washing machine! YMMV!

I've heard that the gas masks also contained asbestos and I want that far away from me!

Yeah, screen-accurate straight out of the box. Wade is amazing. All I had to do was put it on the bag. I wish all Indy gear was that easy.

Well it's what I ordered from Wade an ToD/LC/CS strap and buckle with the grooved option.
Now that I see these photos I can't wait to get it !

I'm waiting on one of these myself whip warrior! These pics just made my wait even more agonizing. But honestly, I hate when I am not waiting on some gear of some sort.

The leather is soft and supple already, because it's brand new. It just looks old and dried out.

I agree with you KT, if you can get hold of the raw products a D.I.Y. job can be ideal, depending on the style in which you're collecting.

I have a strap/buckle from Lee Keppler, and I think they are so great, I ordered one for my wife, too!

Post them if you can. I don't think we have documented anything in this thread on Keppler's offerings, yet.

Lee does make a great product. I bought one of his CS straps last year, and his buckles are pre-bent, although the angle is a bit shallower than what I see on-screen in ToD/LC/CS. As mentioned above, I got a Wade Egan because the leather color and distressing is spot-on, although I had to bend the buckle myself (after geometrically leveling it in a vise to insure that the bend would be accurate). Both vendors have excellent quality products, and you can't go wrong with either one.

Would someone please post a tutorial on this buckle bend? I ordered Wades LC strap and he mentioned bending the buckle but how and to what angle? What angle does the buckle come with? Does it even matter to someone who is not SA crazy?

get yourself a couple of pairs of pliers and bend away.

The bend in the buckle is just a cosmetic consideration which doesn't affect the performance of the strap. So it really doesn't matter unless you're an ultra screen-accurate fanatic. Basically, the buckle is bent to 45-degree angle about 2/3 of the way up (just above the center bar). I don't have any How-to pics, but I can describe the procedure.

Simply place the buckle in a vise with the roller side up, and facing towards you (even unbent buckles have a slight degree of curve). Place a small level (a plastic line level works best) atop the buckle until the bubble is perfectly centered between the lines, to insure that the buckle is perfectly level before you bend it. Keep it clamped firm but loose enough that you can tilt it from side to side as necessary until you have it leveled correctly. I recommend using masking tape or a fold of paper towel around the portion of the buckle that is gripped by the vise, so as not to scratch the metal.

Once you have the buckle leveled, with the upper 1/3 protruding from the top of the vise, clamp it tightly between the vise. Double check the level after clamping to see that it is still level. Then use a straight, heavy object (such as a brick or hardwood board) to gently force the buckle forward (towards you), bending it to the proper angle. Make sure to keep your pressure even so that the metal is bent uniformly. If you are unsure about the angle, you can check it with a protractor, or you can just eyeball the side perspective against a movie still until you are satisfied with the result.
