Beautiful hats, gents. It will drive me crazy until I get mine, so I've been trying to avoid looking at this thread. Today I had a moment of weakness, and here I am. Still, the pain gives me hope. Maybe I'll have mine by the end of the year.

Well, I haven't posted much around here lately, but I figured I'd pop in to share some pics of my AB DELUXE.
It was about a year ago this month that I received this hat, my second AB Deluxe from Marc, and from day one, I put it through some serious wear in all sorts of weather. It's been rained on plenty and thoroughly soaked, worn in humid heat, icy cold and all sorts of weather in between. And yes, it's seen its fair share of nice and sunny days as well. I've worn it as a dress hat and I've worn it on the hiking trails and around the campfire, too. No matter what it goes through, it just seems to look better, at least to me. I got it open-crown and bashed it myself into what I like to call a "Clean Cairo", that is, turned brim, tight front pinch and with the straight-sided style of the Cairo hat, but without all the droops and lumps and bumps and dust. However, I'd always been curious about how it would look if it got a little sprinkling of "Cairo dust", so for these pics I decided to dirty it up a bit to bring out some more of the Indy character.
It may not be a shot for shot, frame by frame, exact match for the Cairo fedora in all departments (I added dust, but I still haven't worked the felt over to give it the added lumps and bumps and droops and such) but it works for me.
THE PICS:

Unlike many things in life, Marc's hats truly do get better with age. Thanks again for an amazing hat, Marc!

Alright, here are early pictures of my new Sea Plane Gray AB. I am not done with the bashing, to say the least, but the sun peaked out today and I grabbed the camera.

GCR, you've done a great job on that AB Deluxe.
Chewbacca Jones, that gray AB is one sharp-looking fedora, and you wear it well.
best wishes,

Congrats on the hat. It looks great, and since I'm awaiting my own gray AB I was very interested in seeing it.
Is there a difference between the Sea Plane hat and the CS train hat?

Only the bash, I think.

And ribbon. I think the train hat had a thinner ribbon...could be wrong, though.

also, I could be wrong, but I don't think the CS hat has the same brown undertones. :junior: -M

I don't think so either. I think the color of the sea plane has was closer to Burma, which is actually one of the colors offered on the Christy's.

Oh yes, the CS hat does have the brown undertones. AB is using the same color felt that they used to make the CS movie hat.
In other words, what you get from AB will be accurate to the CS color
for sure, and best guess to the Raiders (because the real gray Raiders hat is, alas, long gone).

Chewie, I gotta be honest, I disagree with you here. I could be wrong, but when I look at Steve's seaplane gray and the gray of the CS hat, I really don't see any brown undertones in the latter whereas the former, in certain lighting, actually does look brown. Different colors, imo. :junior: -M

Mulciber, from my understanding, Steve does use the same felt. He can clarify that, though. But with my hat, I do notice significant differences in different lighting conditions.

I can say for a fact it's the same felt. trust me.

Keep in mind that Steve changed his felt when he got the Indy 4 job. The older sea plane hats are a slightly different shade than the current ones.
As for current comparisons, it's all in the lighting. But as Oak says, it's the same felt. Not just the same color... the felt.
It is a good case example of how things look different due to monitors, lighting, and other conditions, though.

I'm not sure what you mean by your first line??
From batch to batch there is a slight difference but I believe he still uses the same felt.

Based on what Steve told me, he sources the felt from the same place, but changed to different felt as a result of trying to find just the right felt for the movie hats. The quality was the same, but he said the felt was closer in feel and look to the Raiders felt, and made the change on the gray hat felt, too, because he liked it so much.
Also, I've noticed that every gray AB I've seen other than mine (in person, all older) looked different in the same "direction" (lack of a better phrase).

Thanks for the kind words (you, too, MLM).
I built one of
these then took it outside for good strong light coverage. Use your macro camera setting and play with the white balance on your camera menu. Mine has some automatic settings for sunlight and also for indoor light. They really help in getting the right color. I've been having a blast playing around with it.
The camera I used is my wife's cast off digital so it's several years old. In other words, you don't have to have the latest most expensive camera at all.

Well, I didn't get it bashed. It was open crowned and I did it with no film in mind. Still, it's an AB and gray. Should be a page or two back on this thread.

Thanks for answering. I saw your hat and I like it a lot. In some pictures it looks grey with a shade of blue, and in the other, grey with some brown tone.
So I was guessing if the felt used in Raiders and the one in Skull could be the same or not, as in your hat I see both shades.
Besides that, the grey hat in Steve's web looks much lighter than others I've seen.
In fact, the skull hat looks lighter than the one in Raiders, but it changes a lot according to the lights. So I'm not sure if it is lighter or not.
(sorry for the poor quality pics)
The one over the table looks Raiders grey to me...

Well, Odo, it's all the same hat, so it just goes to show how lighting can effect the look of things.

True, bink, true...
Speaking for myself, I know that I, for example, get better looking in DIRECT proportion to how dim the lighting is...

Slowdevil, forgive me if you've already said this and I missed it, but what sort of lighting did you use to get the red?
As a photography geek, I'm curious.

I managed to get my AB right before leaving for a dig outside of Jerusalem. Here are a few photos of it, the first at home, the second in the airport at Tel Aviv, and the third in front of the Albright Institute for Archaeology in Jerusalem:
NS, what bash did you ask for?
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner--I was in Boston for a conference at the time. This is the KotCS bash, and you can see the similarities most closely with these two photos:
Interestingly enough, I believe I originally requested a Raiders bash made on the KotCS block, but after seeing the newest movie, I was really leaning towards getting the KotCS bash. Turns out that's what I got, and I couldn't be happier.
I received it just two days before hopping on a plane to Israel for my first dig, and have worn it ever since. Many of the established archaeologists and other scholars I ran into at the SBL conference I was at last week really enjoyed seeing my AB. It really is a great hat for both in the field and at the university.
best wishes,
Nebraska Schulte
