That's exactly what I was thinking! Well done on this gem of a hat, good sir. It sounds like it's been pretty durable for you as well over the past year. How active have you been with it? How does it handle the elements and the humidity of the South?

Thanks for the props. It is a daily driver, so it's been used pretty hard. Sweat and dirt. I'm a part time plumber, and the only place it's never been is under a house, although that would be a great way to age the hat. The sun, heat, rain and humidity have had no adverse effects that I can see. Also, the pinch is still thick and full, and I DO grab by the pinch. I have since I was seven, because that's the way that Indy did it. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another, and I will as soon as I have the funds. Want the Raider bad. Cheers.

It may be a little high in the front, or the pinch might need to come down a little lower. Actually it looks pretty good to me. BTW, you can resize photos with the edit feature in Photobucket. That way you don't have to use the link. An admin will correct me, but I believe that 800 x 600 is the Max size for display. Cheers.

Yeah I try to get the pinch in the front right but i cant get the "dents" or tear drops to crease and set in deeply, i keep watching penmans youtube videos but I cant get it i dunno I want like a cross between a temple bash and crystal skull style. I dunno i guess i'll just keep trying.

Try some steam to set in the bash. Normally when felt will not take a dry bash it can be hit with steam and held in position until cool. This will usually set the bash. I'm sure that there is a tutorial for this somewhere. Perhaps someone more familiar with the site can point you to it. Cheers.

distilled water in a spray bottle also works and has less of a chance of damaging the felt with heat. Or, you know, if it's raining, that works too.

Water is safer than steam. The only disadvantage (but insignificant for me) is that a water bash needs hours to dry. I do my adjustments at night and the hats are ready to wear by morning.

ok tired a new bash with water....i dunno if i got it right, i just dont want a raiders bash.

"right" is all relative. If you're not trying to achieve a specific "SA" look, it's kinda hard to go wrong. The real question is do YOU like the way it's bashed?

That having been said, as a generic Indy bash, it looks like the front crease is a bit high. Generally, the height in the front (that is to say, the lowest part of the center dent) should come to about 4.5" (provided the hat is in the neighborhood of 5.5" open crown), e.g.:

for some reason i cant get the hat to work with me....arggh this is becoming a pain in the ###! Actually i had ordered the fedora shaped and that wasn't even done well. no offense but i didn't even plan to redo any of this myself. Not in a good mood. Oh and how could i forget that my indy satchel color wasn't like the one shown on the website, but that's okay he has my money now anyway.

Honestly, I'm just not convinced that the blocks used on the Coyle's hats are really right for an Indy hat (although with the Raider, I think it's the brim dimensions that make it look off). Something about them always seemed 'off' to me. If you can't get the felt to hold a crease, that doesn't speak too highly as to to the quality of the felt either.

I think the first set of photos you posted up here looked rather decent... The hat looked good for the price to me...

And again, that's kind of the point...At the price Todd is selling for, the hats won't be the best felt, or best shaped out there...But they work well in the price range they are in...The Fed IV's would be the only close enough alternative, and (for me), a little better, but it depends on your skill shaping the hat yourself as well, which is another thing to worry about...

I certainly wouldn't give up on the hat you have now....It looked rather good before...Even though you don't really like the Raiders look, it suited you...Hat bashing takes a fair bit of patience to work the "right" bash (for you) into the thing...So go slower and do a little at a time perhaps?

It's certainly nowhere near "Amish" stage yet....

well sammy gave me a akubra adventurer and its 20 bucks more than todds and its holding the pinch and shape.

That's because Akubra's felt is just better.

The main thing "wrong" with your hat as it is (at least as it relates to an Indy hat) is that the center dent isn't coming down low enough.

How do I make it lower

You push the top bash into the felt deeper....And keep working it in until it "sticks"...It'll pull in the sids a touch, leading a little more "slope" to the outside angles, but you can balance that for personal taste..

I gotta agree on the Fed IV's felt being "proven"....I have two and they both molded easily (without water, although they've since been rained on heavily), and kept their shapes well...

The Todds I've handled, but not had in my possession long enough to comment on the ease of shaping it....It sounds like a lot more work than it needs to be, but again, at the price, you'll be hard pushed to find something markedly "better"...The Fed's are great...And the Explorador's look wonderful too (Slightly higher cost though)... But that's perhaps one maker in anywhere near the bracket Todds hats are in that uses decent felt....

Not especially easy to find it seems....In hats, as in clothing as well, handmade, higher costing goods are the best...The balance outside of those are between the best felt for the cash, and what you are looking for in the hat...

I still don't think your Todds looks bad....Although I can see it's not what you wanted...

Perhaps selling it and saving for something like a Fed IV Deluxe would solve the issue better than reworking the bash?

Agreed. I think your "stick-to-it-ivness" is paying off.

I don't know how it is for some but I find bashing fedoras quite hard, but I'm really picky about how it looks and what not. Plus I'm never happy with it for even feel as if I'm doing it right I'm always fiddling with it. Dunno it thats good or bad. But this is coming from the only member who lies the TOD bash style lol. j/k.

Creasing is easy, especially just a center dent with a pinch. Pop up diamond crease? That's harder. But it's fun. Creasing hats is one of my simple joys in life.

Yeah bashing is one of those things that can be a rewarding activity but an obsessive one too. But that's part of the fun of this hobby! I wish I had the time, skills, tools, ability, and money to take it to the next level of blocking but I know myself, i would get consumed with it, do it a few times, then move on to my next hobby/obsession. So for now, I'll just stick with working with the hats I purchase.

sammy have you bashed your raiders yet?

looking at todd's new raider hat, is making me want one. i have a todd's hj hat that i love.it's 2nd hand.and i've had it i think close to 2 years now.and been wearing it almost everyday.

Just wanted to post a few updated shots of my Todd's (Coyle's) RAIDER showing a couple of different angles.

I think Mitch makes every hat look "damnably good"...So should be automatically ruled out of being allowed to show any hat here.

I'd been giving this one it's share of wear over the last few weeks and about a week or so ago I got caught in a bit of drizzle (didn't soak the hat or anything, mind you, but it did get it good & damp) so I took the opportunity to curl up the sides a little as it dried. I've always been a sucker for a little bit of curl on the sides of the brim so I thought I'd try it out on this hat to see if it'd "stick" and so far they haven't uncurled all that much... and of course, having those sides lifted up a bit also affects the look of the brim width.

Mitch, nice work on the brim! These are soft hats, and they will need some finesse-ing to get them just right (to you). Besides, the bash I put in them is usually knocked out during shipping.
