Christy's Fedora
Anyone ever heard of the Christy's Classic fedora?
Before I got my Akubra I was looking at this hat, but was concerned over dimensions and the ribbon. I didn't find mention of it here, so I wanted to see what everyone thought.
(Yes the ribbon would have to go!)

Oh, it's not a dirty thing... nothing wrong with being proud of somebody's work and advising others to go to them as well. I'm becoming a big fan of Akubras too, but I've yet to get my hat reblocked by Art. I can't find his address though, (and somebody said he had a website?) so I don't know where it can go. Can Art replace ribbons, too? Maybe Kentucky Mason can send his fedora there to be reblocked AND get the ribbon changed.

Ok, retelling another old story....and it goes this way....Ford supposedly made a personal visit to Christy's and purchased a fedora from them when he was in London for the pre-Raiders prop gathering. It was during this same trip that he visited Wested for his fitting. This fedora actually appears somewhere in the film, according to the folks AT Christys, but they won't say what scene. I've always wondered if this was indeed a true story, due to the constant debate on the change in the hat style and crown over the years from scene to scene in the film. He may have been switching between an HJ and his Christy. So, according to the Christy's staff, there's a 'ringer' in the film somehwere of their hat, and it's Ford's personal property.
Take it for what it's worth. Regards. Michaelson

Makes me wonder if the Christy's fedora is the fedora that some call gray one (plane scene and the end scene on the steps). Since Ford is in a suit, it seems more logical he'd wear his own fedora rather than in scenes requiring action so that his personal hat would not get dirty. I could totally be off on this theory, but it's just a thought that popped into my head a few moments ago.Michaelson wrote:Ok, retelling another old story....and it goes this way....Ford supposedly made a personal visit to Christy's and purchased a fedora from them when he was in London for the pre-Raiders prop gathering. Isn´t this a Trilby?
Hi, I am no expert on hats but this one looks like a Trilby to me. I understand that this type of hat may fall under the category Fedora, but I doubt that it has the same brim and crown size. From the Trilbys I have encountered I would say that it is considerably smaller than the Indy style Fedora, especially the brim, which is only 2-1/4 inches. It is a classic English hat as much as I am informed. Of course I would buy it alone for the beautiful box )
Greetings.
And here is a picture of a Trilby worn:

I just checked the German Hat scene and it may well be that the grey hat worn by Ford in the Plane scene from the beginning and the hat worn by the German in the cairo scene are the very same, but they are definitely not a grey Trilby like the one shown above. To me they look just like a grey HJ. And I doubt that there is a Trilby from Christy´s in the film, definitely not one of Indianas lids.

Glad to see I've sparked such controversy...
Now I'm gonna have to go through the DVD and pause every time there is a cut. Wonder if there would be a dead give away that allows the Christy's folks to ID the hat...or are they just playing on Urban Legend to sell more fedoras...
Anyone know any good sites with clean screen grabs from raiders.
The only shot that pops into my mind that the hat may be switched is in the old man's house in Cairo..."Bad dates" scene

I own this Christy's fedora (though I think it's more a trilby). I bought it in late 2005 while studying in Britain. I'm back in Britain and the hat is in California, so I cannot provide pictures (if I scrounge up some, I'll post them). It's a good hat, but its biggest flaw (in terms of not offering a decent make-do Indy hat) is that the brim width is only 2.5 inches all the way around. You could replace the ribbon, of course, but there's also a lot of taper on the crown. This was my first fur-felt hat, though, so you have to cut me a break. =) Actually, as fedoras go (non-Indy), it's an excellent hat. It's been wet, etc, and has held up quite well.
