Advintage options
Thomas at Advintage is about to start work on my Premium Raiders Fedora with turn I ordered earlier this year! Excited!
I'm just wondering about the lining. I've gone for the standard, so it comes with the white satin lining. But I'm wondering if I should step it up and go for that map lining instead?
Is the map lining the same satin material? Is it good/worth it? Maybe I should just stick with the simple, elegant white. I don't know!
It's such a little thing but now I'm in a pointless quandary!
What are your thoughts folks?

My two cents.
White is the standard, but if you use any kind of hair product, it'll eventually start to show, discoloration of the white.
I'm talking from experience, now I now longer use any kind of gel, my last AdVantage I went witht eh gold lining.
And it looks classy.

But in the end it's what you want, what ever you choose, your going to love wearing Thomas hats, I know I do.

Ah, that makes good sense about the white. Thanks Croft!
I reckon I might go for the map lining then. For fun!
... and chin strap holes! Chinstraps are monumentally uncool, but might come in handy in the face of windy peril!

Chin straps.
When windy, mine stays on fine, and if it’s that windy, my thumb and finger on the front lid is all I’ve ever need, and it gets windy these days and never lost my hat.
But if you’re serious about it, go for it.

Hmmm. Maybe I'll ask him not to bother with the chinstrap holes.
I suppose, in future, if I feel I really need them, then it would probably be quite easy to put them in myself, right?

Hehe! Thanks Croft.
I know chinstraps are, though potentially practical, so silly and deeply un-Indy!
But apart from the fact that I might not need them, why do you think it I would be 'choosing poorly' if I got Thomas to include them?

Re: Advintage options
I don’t know how Thomas creates the chinstrap holes, but punching holes though the felt won’t look right for an Indy hat.
An alternative option is installing a wind trolly. These used to be more common on fedoras. The original ones had a button on the end that the wearer could button into the lapel of his overcoat. That probably isn’t as practical for modern wardrobe so you could make one with a clip to attach to your shirt. https://vintagefashionguild.org/resourc ... nd-trolly/
The idea is similar to a hat keeper like this. https://a.co/d/eY5VzZW

Ooh, I don't think he ever punches it through the felt - it's just the sweatband.
Anyway, I just emailed him to say I didn't want the chinstrap after all!
He's probably infuriated by my endless faffing!
Also, he may have already made the holes, in which case - it doesn't really matter.

That wind trolly is fascinating stuff, I did not know about it. Thanks for sharing!Indiana Jeff wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 12:35 pm I don’t know how Thomas creates the chinstrap holes, but punching holes though the felt won’t look right for an Indy hat.

Thurrafork, there’s never a bad choice when it comes to anything AdVintage, Thomas does quality work.

I remember the 'Michalson' Borsalino I purchased from Peters' Brothers Hats, years ago had a wind trolly. Good concept, but felt out of place for an 'Indy-style' fedora, so I removed it. W>

Re: Advintage options
If you did want to go the chinstrap route, Akubra sells removable chinstraps which slide between the stitches on the sweatband without any modification. I personally would be hesitant to go this route with a factory hat because of how the sweatband stitching is done. However, I think it would be fine with a custom AdVintage, since I'm guessing the sweatband is sewn in the way most top notch hatters do it- by hand rather than machine. David Morgan offers the Akubra chinstraps for a good price. https://www.davidmorgan.com/shop/produc ... tHEALw_wcB
However, as others have said, a well-fitted hat shouldn't have much need of a chinstrap. My Fed IV has stayed on through many a high wind, and that's a factory hat we're talking about- so a custom fitted specifically to your head should stay on even better. But there's certainly nothing wrong with wanting a chinstrap or some other device for extra security.
