New wested pants and shirt

Post by bearbeast »

After around a year being without any proper fitting Indy pants and shirt I finally decided to get some from Wested.

The pants fit perfectly. I measured a pair of pants that I owned and rounded down, since those were a bit loose. The shirt is still very very big, even though I got an M. Guess I need to go with S next time.

The pants are very comfy, the cavalry twill is thick and heavy, I had not expected this, but it was a great surprise. I was afraid it was going to be very flimsy. I had ordered some wool cavalry twill in the past, when I made my own Indy pants and that one was very light.

And here are the pants combined with the shirt:

I don't know why Wested makes the shirts so big. The sleeves are long, the shoulder seam way below my shoulder and it feels like I am swimming in it. ](*,)

Very happy with the pants, I would highly recommend them. They did not even shrink in the 40 °C wash. :-k

Very beautiful pants. And they look comfortable to wear.
About the shirt size there is similar problem with WPG shirts. They are too big (and long) for their size.
While the shirt appears a little baggy on you it does not look that large so what you can try is that you take the shirt in at side seams or if tailor does it for you. But you won't be able to fix shoulder seams.

The pants are very comfortable. It's pleasant that they are baggy. :-k

I was thinking to take the shirt in a bit, I could even manage the shoulders, but somehow the pockets are too big as well.

It is much larger the shirts I have that are L.

If you say WPG is the same maybe this is the style? Loose and baggy for Indy? :o

I think when it comes to Wested and WPG, they cut their shirts on the large size for the mass audience. Most people don’t want a fitted shirt, even though thats how an Indy shirt should fit.

Hmmmm, yup, this makes a lot of sense. I guess it is the same for the jackets they make. The Legacy line is the only one that is more tailored/fitted, the OTR is more loosey-goosey. :-k

Some time ago I would have been all for loose stuff to fit my beer/wine/whisky/fast-food belly, but now I'd like a more fitted shirt. :rolling:

Nice greyish color!

How wide is the leg opening at the bottom?

Yeah, I like the colour too!

Just measured the bottom of the leg, it's 215 mm. It's quite good for me, doesn't slip over the heel of my shoes.

That was a criticism of US Wings for years, that their jackets were too loose fitting, but Sarge said openly they are making OTR jackets for the masses and people expect more room. Same when USW came out with their Legend line that was slimmer fitting.

Well, manufacturers know better what the market looks like, for sure. It would be crazy to make fitted jacket that most of the buyers won't like.

So, I am left to modifying the existing shirts, I don't think the "small" size would fit better. And I don't have the energy I had years ago to make my own shirts from scratch. ](*,)

Wow you were making shirts from scratch ? I admire that. I only got to the point of modifying base shirts. I always had trouble with collar sewing

Yes, I did a small run of around five shirts. Took apart a cheap shirt for the pattern. I did not account for shrinkage during washing and all five got very tight after a few washes. :rolling:

For some reason, modifying clothing is something I can't manage. Or I have failed a few times in the past... :rolling: I don't know why. I am hoping this time will be the lucky turn.

Lookin' good, Bear.

I have a slim build and get all my Indy shirts tailored. It makes a world of difference.

Definitely try to first shrink the daylights out of any shirt you’re thinking about having tailored!

I learned the hard way with a couple pearl snap western flannels. The prints aren’t available anymore from my go-to outfit. Nice, US made stuff-was very frustrated with myself!

Thanks for the tip! I'll put the shirts through the wash a few times before beginning the tailoring. :TOH:

Looking good, Bear! I really like the look of those Wested pants! Did you have to hem them or do they provide them with the military hem like on Indy's pants? They look like they fit great, and have a great color too!

As for the shirt, it still looks nice, even though it is too big. I am surprised that the Wested shirts run that much larger. Even if the cut is not as slim as Indy's shirt, the pockets seem to be scaled up as well, like you said. So it's almost like it's not an issue of the cut being slim or loose, but more that the whole thing was made larger. I hope you have success modifying it, because it really does look nice and would probably be a great shirt if the sizing was better.

Congratulations on some great looking gear!

Thank you, my friend! :TOH:

I had to sew the military hem myself, Wested provides them open bottomed. I think it's kind of nice, you can adjust it depending on your height. I could get around four inches out of the hem, maybe a bit less.

Yesss, that is it! It seems like the entire shirt is slightly larger, a bit comically so. :rolling: I hope to manage to do it within this week and will come back with the results.

The trousers look great!

I only ever bought the trousers and shirt from Wested once, because I was so let down by the shirt...The trousers are superb, lovely fabric, decent construction, even if not quite accurate enough, it's still fine, but the shirt....Man, it was wild, it was pale lime coloured, huge on me, with pockets that took up my whole chest..I tried it on once, hated it and threw it out as soon as my Magnoli arrived a few months later...The trousers I still use and love, but yeah, their shirts are so wildly off it's a touch laughable...The Magnoli I have is stunning, one of the first shirts I owned that was fitted to ME, and there's no billowing on the waist at all...It makes the whole set look so much better when you don't have fake "shirt love handles" around the waist there....My Azuma shirts also, are fitted so well that they don't balloon out much too, but my favourite is still that perfectly fitted Magnoli....It makes a huge difference with a perfect fitting shirt, because it makes the legs/trousers look much wider and bigger, and that? Is what I see on Indiana Jones too...Wide and baggy trousers and a thinner upper body section in the shirt....

You could try heat shrinking it, but you won't lose the inches needed to make it fit, I suspect...

On the plus side, the colour now looks decent! That pale green was hurtful.... ;)

You described it really well, fifthchamber! That is the look I want (obvious, I guess, around here! :rolling: )

Magnoli's is currently out of my price range (the custom made version at least), need to wait some time to gather the funds, after the latest Wested order. I almost feel like throwing the shirts away, like you said, but they were none to cheap, with taxes and all. If I fail in the modification, then they can go in the trash.

I am a bit lazy at the moment, but I think the best way is to make my own shirts. The material would be probably $20-$25/shirt. It's just a big effort putting it all together.

The pants I really love: both how they look and how they feel. Nice material, the colour is ok, Wested did quite well here. :-k

Took some pics of the less bad outcome:

Image

Image

You can see in the first pic, on my right shoulder I pinched the material while sewing the shoulder. This pinching occurred in a few other places too. The resewing also caused the armholes to be way tighter than I had estimated and the shirt is quite uncomfortable at the armpits. On the plus side, the sleeve length turned out spot on and the fit around the belly is not bad.

I'll have to give some thought to what I want to do in the future, for now I need a break from sewing. :rolling:

It doesn't look that bad, but too bad that you didn't just took the shirt in at the waist and leave shoulders as they were. Fixing shoulders on clothes is hardest things to do, almost impossible. This is also what seamstress told me when I took my WPG shirt to tailor it overall. In the end I agreed with her that fixing it is not worth it since It can look even worse so I ordered custom sized Azuma instead. I now wear WPG shirt as spare shirt when other shirts are washing.
Honestly WPG shirt is not 100% screen accurate to ANY movie. Neither is Wested's or Magnoli's.
It's time that we will get decent shirts so I will make another post about this.

Yeah, it's definitely a challenge modifying the shoulder seam. ](*,) I think I'll try to make some shirts from scratch in the future.

I can't complain much about the screen accuracy. My standards for that are low, even Wested would be good enough for me if the fit was better.

I saw your overview of the different movie shirt and different maker's details. Very nicely put together, well done! :TOH:
