Most accurate Temple of Doom bag strap
Hi
Finding correct Temple of Doom bag strap has been a thing for me for some time now. The first thing is correct leather. This strap looked so smooth and thin and yet strong. The color appears to be very dark brown so it mostly looks black. It even gives me a feelings that some straps in ToD were black but this might just be depending on the lighting. They indeed look more dark brown than black, but were they black and look dark brown from distressing or were dark brown and look black because Indy looks wet in those bridge scenes ? The part where bag is put through O-ring is more brown. Same in this snap. And what is this crease ? Is this just from bending the strap ? What I'm very curious about is what is this hole on the strap ? I once read on one forum post that those straps could be vintage suitcase straps and strap having this hole could be from some suitcase but then it would probably have more holes than just one. It might be something else. And inner side of strap looks to be smooth just like outside. What strap do you suggest that is most screen accurate ?
Regards

Have you looked at Make It Jones? He may be able to work with you if his basic TOD strap isn’t what you’re looking for.

Re: Most accurate Temple of Doom bag strap
Everything after the mine cart chase is wet / sweaty plus some of the bridge scenes ("let her go") seem to have quite dark lighting (overcast maybe). Put very dark brown next to black and you'd see a definite colour difference between the two. If a leather is black distressing it wouldn't bring out a brown tone.

As a proud owner of MIJ's TOD leather goods, I can vouch for their quality. MIJ makes one of the most screen accurate TOD bag straps I've seen. It is rough on the underside, but I'd be willing to bet that the screen-used strap was too. What you're seeing in most of those photos is wet leather. If I were to dip my MIJ bag strap in water, it would appear identical to those screengrabs, especially at that resolution.

Thanks to everyone posting here. I will look into Magnoli and MakeitJones straps and decide.

Long time lurker, but really enjoy the content here.
I'm curious about Knibs7 claim, its Kyle right?
Kyle, don't you think you should be addressing poeples concerns and complaints about you ripping them off (can we just call it stealing?)
before advertising your goods here? I would think the admins would give you the boot for this sort of thing?
I've been watching this thread for a bit and you've yet to address anything.

You'd be nuts to send this guy any money. You got a 50/50 shot of actually getting any merch.

Go down to the Grail knight lair and you’ll see why not to invest in bad penny, I’d say pardon the pun, but not this time.
MIJ or IM are your best bets.
Just my two cents.

Lucky he sent it to you instead of taking your money or gear..Looks nice, but, for everyone else interested in buying first time, sorry, Kyle isn't to be trusted and there are just better, more reliable makers out there with no history of scams or theft..Use them instead..scotttaylorbass wrote: ↑Fri Mar 07, 2025 12:38 pm Just got my ToD strap from Bad Penny (Kyle Eric)

He has a less than stellar reputation, has been banned from at least one Facebook group that I know of for his practices, and continues to post on COW but won’t even address the thread dedicated to him in the Grail Knight’s Lair section.
I guess he thinks if he doesn’t acknowledge the problems, they don’t exist?
Weird.

Kyle's strap really looks most accurate but since many members have unresolved issues with him, I can't risk money right now.
Friends can you post your ToD straps ?
Does anyone own MakeitJones ToD strap ? Which one is more screen accurate for ToD, Tooling or Bridle leather ?

Re: Most accurate Temple of Doom bag strap
Kyle's strap is not the be all end all Temple straps! Making such a claim is pretty bold if you ask me. Many makers out there make an awesome strap.
Makeitjones is awesome! Great chap to work with. He made my temple belt and I cannot praise him enough for his attention to detail and materials used. But then you have Magnoli which also makes a really great strap. Wade Egan is way good to as well but he no longer makes stuff.
Look at my temple bag / strap I did a few years ago. This is wade Egan strap which I distressed myself. You just have to do some research on how to age leather and give it a go.

Weathered the strap. Indys bagstrap allways looked so completly torn up. I also belive some of the producers told that the strap was beat to beyond. Lookin at the screen caps the Doom strap really looks beat up. Almost dry rotted.
I tried to get as close as possible.
Also sporting the correct flat roller buckle.
Next up is the web belt with the aged brass buckle.

Re: Most accurate Temple of Doom bag strap
Yeah, I agree with Holt on this. "Most accurate" is impossible to say, Kyle's is good, but you can find just as good from at least two other makers I know, reliable and just as accurate. Kyle's "speciality" is just the weathering he adds to it, which isn't easy to nail, but also, isn't hard to do with work and passion..MakeitJones would be my choice, and then distressing it by myself...You'll get just as accurate a strap that way, without the concern of ordering from someone who's not trustworthy.Jonesy Jr. wrote: ↑Sun Mar 09, 2025 11:33 am Kyle's strap really looks most accurate but since many members have unresolved issues with him, I can't risk money right now.

Thanks. I did business with MakeItJones for some holsters before and he is very good maker and easy to communicate with so I think I will go with him for the strap. Do you recommend his premium bridle leather version or tooling leather version ?fifthchamber wrote: ↑Sun Mar 09, 2025 6:58 pmYeah, I agree with Holt on this. Re: Most accurate Temple of Doom bag strap
If you plan on using it, and not trying to get it looking as "mangy" as the Temple strap? Bridle leather, it'll look nicer, hold up longer and still fill the accuracy, but if you wanted to just wreck it and get it looking as broken in? The standard tooling will work perhaps a touch better, since you can lay into it a little more with out being worried about the damage caused!

This is a strap I make. I used bridle leather.
It can be darkened but I liked this tone.

Re: Most accurate Temple of Doom bag strap
Jeremiah,
Cool stuff! I like the bridle leather for the strap, simply because it's a perfect all rounder, beautiful looking leather, strong enough to take usage (heavy usage), and also a leather that ages rather superbly! Lovely stuff!
I also do tend to prefer the touch lighter Raiders colouring, but as you say, colour is easy enough to work in as well...I currently have two, a Raiders and a darker Crusade and I prefer to use the Raiders...The lighter colour just works better for me!

Re: Most accurate Temple of Doom bag strap
Thanks,
I found that with use the lighter color will naturally go a touch darker. I think i have some of this stuff left. I know i have the hardware some place as well. We just finished moving houses so its scattered. I used to make belts and straps for sale but have not for a few years now. I have the bag on a skeleton i use for my science classes in my room at school.
