Raiders holster

Post by bearbeast »

I was thinking of trying to make a Raiders holster, but since I am lazy I would start from the Indygear pattern:

https://indygear.net/the-accessories-of-indiana-jones/

Maybe a stupid question... what size is this supposed to be printed on? An A3 sheet of paper? Anyone know?

I can also freehand it in the end, but it would save a lot of grief if I can use this one. :-k

Thank for any input.

Regards,
Bear

Update: For a first try I printed it partially on four overlapping A4 sheets, in such a way that the bottom part has a length of 12 cm. I took this measurement based on my Webley holster:

I will try and make it in the next weeks and see how it works. Will update once I have news.

Can't wait to see your progress on this! I once tried making a raiders holster from the same pattern early in my quest for gear. But I neglected to scale the pattern up. So I ended up with a holster that would probably be the right size for a 3 year old :rolling: Hope the build goes well and I'm excited to see how it turns out!

That is super funny! :rolling: I have had that happen to me before, once or (to my shame) twice... :-

I will post the finished product for sure. I'll first test out the pattern in paper, maybe cardboard and then move on to leather. Still got two other small projects to finish this weekend and then I am on it.

I think my estimations were roughly correct. Might have worked if it was 5-10% smaller, but the paper pattern seems to fit the replica well:

Once I transfer it to leather and sew it together we will know for sure. :CR:

Looks pretty good so far. I’ve been dabbling with the idea of making a CS holster eventually, so I’m curious to see how your Raiders turns out.

The HE model is a larger framed revolver so if you ever get that replica you’ll need the extra space in the holster.

I think the CS holster is very similar to ToD/LC, which I love. Since it's made for six inch barrels it has smoother lines and a nice profile. Not to mention the off-center brass stud which really looks cool.

I made a few of those in the past as well, but this is my first try at a Raiders holster.

I did not know that, thanks for the hint! This would mean the dimensions are not so far off the real thing. :-k

I keep waiting for a nice metal replica to come out. Maybe at some point it will.

Here's a measurement I took of my Todd's holster years ago.

This thread shows the comparison between the N-frame and K-frame revolvers.

Thank you, Indiana Jeff, for the measurement. It seems I really was off by just under 8%. My holster came out at 13.7 inches, instead of the 12.7. ](*,) I already finished it last night, before seeing your measurement this morning. But it is not comically huge, fortunately, just a tad oversized:

I had forgotten about the post about the replica comparison, though I appear to have commented on it. My memory fails me.

Anyway, I am pretty satisfied with how the holster came out. I think I will not be making one 8% smaller. :rolling:

The HFC is housed inside quite well:

Looks great! Glad you were able to figure out sizing. Honestly those patterns are SO old—AND left over from 2 or 3 site revisions ago—that I have no clue what size they were meant for, if even meant for being printable. :rolling:

Thank you, Mike! :D I have been looking at that pattern for a long time, trying to figure out if I was missing something. :rolling:

Well, it is printable, at least I would say it seems to work. Maybe we can add a hint about the size. :-k

Thank you very much, my friend! :TOH: I too like the warmer brown of this one better than the dark brown of my LC holster. Feels more... Adventury... :rolling:

We really need to add a note to the pattern with a measurement so folks can print to the correct scale. I’ll talk with the Top Men about making that update.

Holster looks great!

Thank you loads, Canyon! :TOH: Yesss, I love the how the colour came out. I used a bit of Pecard's after dyeing and it gave it some luster.

It is veg tanned cowhide. Not sure of thickness, by eye I estimate 9 ounce. I think it was a shoulder piece. Got it a long time ago and there was only a bit left, can't tell for sure. :-k

If I think of it over the next day or so, I'l ltry and get some measurements from my Lee Kepler holster.
He was pretty much the goto for these back in the day, and I think made his based on screen used gun and/or holster.

That holster looks gorgeous, Dalexs. The aging is very nice on it, how long have you had it?

Thanks. That was from when we first moved back to Boston., so maybe 2003ish.
I had met Lee at a few QM summits and bought stuff as soon as I got back.
He had just come out with a "new color" that was way to purple'y and I had already been mucking around with
aging and leather dying techniques.
(not to mention redying the NH shirts)

This was the progression

20 year old holster, that is amazing, I like it a lot.

It looked really nice in the new state as well, but I like what you did with it. Cool history right there! :TOH:

OK. I redrew the holster pattern to make it cleaner for print and added a note from Jeff to help with sizing.

Thank you very much, Tremolo! :notworthy:

I plan to let it age naturally, I really like the patina leather objects get over time. But I was thinking to wear it around the yard when doing some work to scuff it up. :-k
