Has anyone tried 3D printing an Indy gun or found good plans online? These are the best I've found on the web so far, I might give them a try on my brother's printer:

I've not heard of anyone printing a S&W. Looks like a pretty good model.

Will advise when I get it! He's doing the assembly and gluing; I'll be doing the filling, painting, and weathering (my first time on a 3D printed prop, but not first time).

His S&W looks good. He needs to paint the medallions gold though.

Haha, that's part of why he's fabricating, and I'm painting. Also his grips are not checkered. That'll be interesting to figure out how to do.

I didn't want to subject him to my, shall we say, zealous attention to detail. Or complete OCD. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Actually, that was my concern with the files I found as well. I considered maybe "scoring" the plastic with a sharp blade but that would be tedious at best. Option 2 was to just not sand the grips after printing since the material tends to come out slightly textured anyway

You may be displaying it, but as it's going to be a holster filler for me, I'm trying to just let that particular bit go.

That said, I'll definitely be painting the medallions and trying my hand at accurately painting/weathering the prop, otherwise.

Actually I was hoping for a quality holster filler as well, so I agree a decent paint job should suffice. My current holster prop is a cheap toy I bought at a flea market so at this point anything is an upgrade.

Update: it's headed my way! See below.

Asked him to leave it unpainted, with the grips off to paint separately.

Question: I'm looking to spray on a gray primer, then a color that will look blued, followed by some time with some fine grit sandpaper for weathering. What colors do you all recommended?

Get it a smooth as possible and then hit it with a flat black over the whole frame. After it's dry, I suggest you use rub n buff - a combination of Ebony and Silver leaf. It's best to experiment first because it can be tricky but the result if done properly is spectacular.

This is a resin Webley I painted and aged years ago using rub n buff.

I would then try and see if genuine grips might fit your frame because if they do, a good set would finish your gun off perfectly...

Update!

So a couple of months ago my brother finally gave me the printed revolver pieces. I'm not sure if it was the type of machine he was using or the type of material, but the pieces are not very dense and the texture is sort of honeycombed. Might dabble with some filler and sanding before painting. As for the paint job, I intend to do a satin black with some silver dry brushing for the gunmetal effect. Here's a pic of the pieces:

It doesn't look bad! Of course, now comes the joy of sanding, or in some cases you can get a clear "filler" that will make the print lines much less obvious. And, yes, it will be light. If you attempt to print it again, and you want to make it denser and finer (and use a lot more plastic) just change the settings before you print. I look forward to your progress pictures!

I actually just ordered this very same 3D-printed S&W from Thingverse! It’s currently being printed and I’ll report back with a review....and photos!!!

Ok... I wanted this version for an upcoming photoshoot, so thought I'd give it a go. Parts are printed!

I did most in black filament, with the grips being a wood composite filament. I've got a single chain link for the lanyard loop. $\:D/$

Now the real work begins... I take each piece and use a combination of sanding with different grits and wiping them down with acetone:

Next is some black spray paint:

While the paint is still sticky to the touch (but NOT wet), I apply graphite powder with a make-up sponge:

Next added some black acrylic washes:

Now, rinse and repeat... not a great shot, but here's the main frame after the two halves are glued together with minor filling and sanding the seams... spray painted and graphite powder added:

I then gave it another light misting of black matt spray paint to dull the shine of the graphite powder. Here are two shots, one with the light reflecting off the metallic finish and one in a more natural lighting:

I've also sanded down most of the screw heads printed into the gun as they looked pretty bad, so I plan on adding real screws once I'm done.

P.S. I should probably add... these are quick shots down with my phone for instructional purposes only.

I'll do some beauty shots with a real camera once I'm done.

I've been using a Creality printer and it works really well. But, there are so many options out there now... just search for the best deal and read the independent reviews.

Nearly done with my pistol... just want to add a few screws and do some final distressing. Stay tuned.

All done! I replaced the printed screws with real ones. Finished with a combination of spray paint, graphite powder, acrylic paint and a little rub n' buff:

Already have... but I think those points are playing more as natural lighting highlights in the photos rather than distressed metal. More evident in person. Though since this will be used primarily for photography, I may have to go a bit more heavy handed with the distressing...

Magnoli, what screws did you use for this? Ordered a 3D printed Bapty and I'm planning to use yours as a guideline. I also ordered some Smith and Wesson medallions to install which I would recommend.

I'm actually ordering the 3d printed Bapty as well as the HGC HF 131 which is pretty popular. I'm planning to bash these two to create a more SA Bapty that functions. I'll start a separate post for that build once I get everything.

Thank God I found this before I bought the one on Etsy. I have 3D printing coworkers whom I can smooth-talk with beer, etc.

To the guys who have printed it, will the cylinder accept .45 Auto dummy cartridges? Or is it off-size?

Strange... I often have this problem (with taller prints), but this one being low to the bed and a short print, I had no trouble.

I don't know, I'm going to try and get my printer back up and running, been having trouble with cura. I am seeing if my friend can print a different file like the webley thats been floating around thingiverse, thank you for the help. I'm 15 and started collecting about a year ago, and its so cool to talk to you guys and be able to ask y'all about different things, so thank you.
