Make a Waxed Cotton Indy Jacket?

Post by Iandiana Jones »

Wested offers cotton jackets of the Indy style.

I had this wild and crazy idea a little while ago to buy one and a few cans of Otterwax and make a waxed cotton jacket. I want one but things like Barbour and Filson are beyond my means.

Anyone ever do this?

Yes, members have experimented with waxed cotton over the years. Here is one thread, though unfortunately the picture link is broken, but there is a good description of the technique used.

Definitely interested in seeing how this turns out as I feel like the regular cotton ones don’t have the same presence of the leather jackets and just look like a UPS uniform to me.

Statistically I knew it was impossible for me alone to have that idea.

Recent wee hours of the morning wikipedia blacl holes have lead me to Civillian Conservation Corps jackets.

I bet an Indy jacket would look nice in the right plaid wool material.

Could be worth an experiment...

You are right about the UPS look. I had thought they looked just like what UPS would wear!

Magnoli’s looks pretty fantastic but yeah the Wested one looks like a total uniform jacket.

Is anybody familiar with Outback Trading Co.? For at least 10 years, they've sold a "Canyonland Landsman" jacket made of a 65% polyester/35% cotton fabric which looks much more like leather (especially in person, as opposed to the photos) than the otherwise nice (but expensive!) Wested and Magnoli cotton jackets. This style even has some Indy-ish features, including D-rings, collar, front pocket location and back gussets.

I've seen similar fabric for sale by the yard at our local JoAnn's Fabric store. I've wondered why nobody's ever tried to do a lightweight spring/summer Indy jacket using this fabric, which would not resemble a UPS jacket. It's also water-resistant -- I've worn my 2 Canyonland jackets walking my dogs in light rain.

I like that Outback Trading Co jacket other than the Western style yokes.
