Thanks! That was my thought, too—it’d be a great summer fedora.

Pictures when it comes, but at the moment it’s spent the last 8 days stuck in customs in Chicago…

I ended up ordering two in the tawny fawn after panicking about the size of my noggin. The 59 came first & is now up in the Bazaar. :TOH: The 60 is few days behind...I'll post pics once it comes & I shape it.

Just bashed and shaped my new tawny fawn Fed IV! The size 60 finally came and I'm super psyched about it. It's pretty grey outside here at the moment, so all pics are coming out poorly with indoor lighting. I'll post some pics assuming we get some good sunshine soon.

It's supposed to rain tomorrow evening at my kids' swim meet...I'm looking forward to beating this baby up a little bit! :)

A little bit a rain will be just the thing to start making it your own.

Looking forward to seeing pictures.

Yeah, can’t wait! And let the rain help, it took a snow storm to get my Fed’s brim just so.

Here is the tawny fawn! I went for a LC bash, so there’s a good bit of cowboy curl in the brim. It’s remarkable how the tawny fawn is so stony in the sunlight and then a nice brown shines through in the shade. Such a lovely hat!

Tonight is the rainy swim meet, so we’ll see how she looks in the morning!

Great job, looking really nice, especially the crown! And you will be tweeting it as long as you own it ;) That is a great color too, looks like it would be at home on the Venice Pier or maybe a certain club in Casablanca. Either way looks perfect for summer.

Posted this in the “What I Wore Today” thread too but always happy to spread the Fed 4 love. A rainy Florida night at the portico of an Italian restaurant! I always feel the brim is too wide but I kind of the love the protection.

This is probably old news but I just saw HatsDirect is now doing a shaping service in a 30s/vaguely LC style. Curious if anybody has tried it?

Got my Federation IV in just in time to get a decent bash and use it for my costume at the Oogie Boogie Bash at Disneyland. It sat in customs at LAX for a week, I was worried it got lost!

Posted this in the “What I Wore Today” thread, but it belongs here too I think, a Moonstone Fed IV I typically wear to work or anywhere requiring me to be a little more dressed up…or when brown doesn’t work as well with my daily outfit. It was originally meant to be a Clipper but I think it’s happier as a Crystal Skull Train hat, just got to ‘train’ that front brim to be a little more swoopy.

It's great to see a number of new Fed IV pix since I last checked this topic! Lookin' good, y'all!

I'm kind of on the fence about keeping mine at this point. My size 61 just doesn't have the "adventure hat" look when perched on my fat head. The brim width isn't "scaled up" with the crown diameter, and it makes a difference aesthetically. It seems like the Fed IV looks best size 57-58. Go larger and the brim begins to look "stingy."

So much comes down physiology. Mine’s a size 59 and after the bashing the crown’s roughly 5 in tall. If I lower the crown any more it starts to look like those zoot suit inspired low crowned-wide brimmed 1940s fedoras…at least on me. Being 5’2” I’ve discovered I really need to keep that crown high and if anything shave an off a little of brim. But it’s going to stay as is….too much tinkering leads to disaster.

Thanks! I've given my two previous Feds a Raiders bash, so attempting a LC bash was a new experience for me.

Thank you for the kind words! A little steam and some patience is all it takes to bash an open-crowned hat. I think I struggled more with shaping the brim. It was stiff as cardboard!

Due to some production problems, Akubra has been having a tough time keeping up with demand. Your best bet is to email The Hattery directly at https://hatsdirect.com/pages/contact-us

Their Sales & Service staff of Trudi, Naomi, Jacqueline & Patrick are always very helpful and friendly, and they can answer your restocking questions.

Just a heads-up for anyone looking for a larger size Fed IV Deluxe, I was told August restock for sizes 63 & 64 I have a large cranium, but it’s mostly bone. ;-) . They were very kind about it.

Just came to my attention last night this is the 25th anniversary since the release of the very first Federation.

Little did Steve, Ron or I have the SLIGHTEST idea back in 1997-98 that the little project we had created for HatsDirect would grow such legs and keep running through several iterations and a remain a top seller for the company a quarter of a century later!

We only wanted to expand on Steve and my practice of reblocking other Akubra models to an acceptable Indy design for fans. At the time, other than customs being Optimo, HJ, or Peters Brothers, there was nothing out there that remotely copied what we as a community wanted, or could afford without breaking the bank.

We wanted a tough real world hat, quality materials, blocked on original 1920’s-30’s blocks, and open crown so any bash from any film could be created.

Makes me proud I had a small part in that part of the hobby history.

Enjoy your Federations!

Thousands have been on real life adventures, performed exactly as they should in actual field conditions, and even appeared on screen!

Not bad for something a group of fans supported so long ago, as without the support of the community, it would have been a one and done.

I guess we all got something right!

That's all so awesome, Michaelson. Yeah, I mentioned you on the facebook Indiana Jones Cosplay Group a while back when talking about the Fed IV's developement. I'm glad I got that part right. :D

I don't know if I've ever posted pics of the "newer" Fed IV Deluxe I've had for about four years now on here. Here it is. I've always been extremely pleased with it. I still like it just as much as my new AdVintage Harrison, which I love a lot.
