MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
First off see these two threads.
What Fedora Was Reference for the Amsel "A" Poster?
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=71976" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's what sparked this thread and similar to the thread which asked the question, help with picking my AdVintage
From this thread.
Help Me Choose My AdVintage
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=72156" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Mods I apologize up front if this is pic heavy. That's me.
I'm pulling the trigger on AdVintage master piece Fedora, I leaning heavy on a SOC non-distressed.
For reference I'll actually be using pic's from movie poster one sheets and his SOC with the bulge on non-bow side.
Part me wants a SOC I can wear when raining, my ABL is rabbit and see's no rain, plus needs a re-block but Penman is doing them right now, I asked. And told to keep asking till he is up to it.
So here are my hats, just the brown ones for now.
AB Raiders, was asked of Steve to do the truck scene where he was hanging off the front, he even did the huge curl on the back, but I quickly steamed that out, then went to Penman for a re-block and this is what it looks like today.
AB KOTCS
ABL SOC
ABL when it was brand new.
Advantage ToD bridge scene with slight turn.
So sufice it to say, like the turn.
This why I'm sorta on the fence, do I want another hat with the turn.
Decisions, decisions, decisions, luckily I'll have about 5 months till he reaches out to for what I want.
So what thoughts.......

Very nice, I love your collection, and if you need a reblock sooner than Penman, I’d talk with Roberto from Steele and Jones. In this video you’ll see a really nice reblock done to an ABL. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RuHwTYWXbwI&t=402s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
So I just throwing this idea out ther to see what others think.
I’ve been reading post about the turn and how some love it some don’t.
I get it, not for all.
But when I look at my collection, dang, I’d say they all have a turn, with the exception of the KOTCS.
Heck, I even had Marc put in a slight turn on my ToD bridge scene.
So it won’t be long and Marc should be reaching out to me.
This is what I’m thinking.
1) I love his SoC (decent version).
2) all my hats have turns, and I think my next will be no turn.
So I want the look of SoC but with no turn, has anyone done this?
How do you think it’ll look, thoughts.

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Marc as in AB Deluxe? As for no turn SOC, I think that would take character away from it, but on the other hand if you really want it, I’d say go for it.

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Beautiful collection! If you want to go the no Turn route why not have them do an opening “Raiders” pre-temple scene? The first shots in the film doesn’t have a turned hat and I think it’s the sharpest hat in the film. I am biased against the turn admittedly, looks cool but always leaves a red mark on my forehead.

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Beyond the extreme weathering, the turn is a large part of what makes the SOC hat the SOC hat. Without the turn you don't get the brim effect.

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Yes this is true IJ
I guess I never realized that other than the opening scene all the fedoras had a turn.
I guess I just thought this was the norm
Now the SOC is the extreme turn version, while the Temple scene doesn’t seem to be so extreme.
I’ve been in touch with Marc today and the process has started.
And thank you HF, wonder why your turned hat leaves a mark. Who made it.
Maybe you could try stream to turn the hat a little and try moving the crease some.

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
It was a Fed 4. Honestly I think it I never found it very comfortable due the shape of my head. As a baby my skull plates were hardening too quickly and I had a surgery to fix that. It’s not noticeable except for a small “dent” just above my left temple so I think it puts extra pressure there on a turned hat.
Anyway, congrats on getting a new hat underway, that’s an exciting feeling!!!

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
That could also be "new hat" syndrome. The Akubra's sweatband is a bit more stiff (harder) when new even though very comfy and soft to begin with. The more you wear it the softer that area will get to wear even the turn along the diagonal becomes the new balanced center for the hat. It will feel off-center when not turned eventually.Hobbit Fedora wrote:It was a Fed 4. Honestly I think it I never found it very comfortable due the shape of my head. Perhaps! If I get another Fed 4 I may go ahead and give it another try… or save my lunch money for an Advintage Raiders...bantufo wrote:That could also be "new hat" syndrome. Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Can't argue that. The Advintage Raiders does have a more flattering brim/crown ratio. But if it's just a matter of the sweatband being uncomfortable temporarily; might be worth wearing that Fed Iv a bit more often to let it break in? Akubras do have a rep for outlasting weather itself.Hobbit Fedora wrote:Perhaps! Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Funny you mention the proportions, it’s been said around different threads that even though the Fed 4 was using the CS hat as a template it’s essentially a dead-ringer for the LC hat. Currently I have to Fed 4 Deluxes in brown and moonstone, both LC bashed and they really seem to like that shape.bantufo wrote:Can't argue that. Croft, just curious, is your Advintage Temple of Doom beaver? And how has it been holding up over the years, Advintage is getting more and more enticing!

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
The ol ToD has been holding up quiet well.
Not as much fading as I was hoping for.
Just look above.
Thomas sent me couple pictures of a SOC with no turn but the bow was moved forward to kinda give it the SOC vibe and another with no turn in grey with bow in standard location and that also looks good.
This is what he sent me in a email. Leaning towards the SOC with no turn, but the bow in standard location.

CroftHi,
yes, I already made some SoC's without Turn, would be no problem, but I don't have many photos. Here is two without Turn, but I have moved the bow of the ribbon more to the front, so it looks like it was turned:

Here's a grey one without Turn and standard bow: https://www.advintage.de/index.php/2020 ... -in-slate/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Have a nice weekend!

Sorry, yes the ToD is beaver.
Well, my hat has shipped.
I’ll wait till it’s in and take pictures of what ended up going with.
You’ll just have to wait like I did.
But can’t wait. Working on a new way to hang 4 instead of 3

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Well my new lid has arrived.
And it's a beaut, real like the look of this one.
Funny how Thomas on line blog makes it look so much lighter.
Nice brown and nice and soft.
It's a SoC with of all things no turn. But still has the vibe I was looking for.
I'd forgotten about the hat box/carry case it came with, and wow it's nice, very old fashion.
Shipped with two cork strips, as we went up a mm, and once the warmer weather hit's I'll be wearing it a lot to get the sweat band to shrink. Then I can take out the cork.
Oh and he shipped with his very own AdVintage pen, nice.
Here's some quick shots, done in a rush as it's very cold out side. Brrrr, come on summer.
Thank you Thomas, you did a great job.
Oh and I ordered on October 10th, so about 3-1/2 months from order to received.
And first chance I can I'll get some out door pictures.

It’s called old sable/
If you go to his site, click on his blog, mine is on top (as of now) you can see how much lighter it looks, it’ll fade over the years I’m sure.
Line is old gold.
And thanks for the compliments.

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
No fun if there’s no prize inside.
My favorite, that’s a tall order/question.
I’d have to say my ABLRaiders, but Thomas’s work is close to my second, my ToD and now my SoC with no turn. Oh and there’s my Adventure built by Steve Raiders and KOTCS…….. I guess there all favorite. My only regret is my Penman KOTCS travel hat, just don’t wear grey often, but it’s but dressy hat, so I’ll never be rid of it.
This is a Master Piece and it holds up to the name, so soft and I like the liner color I chose, wore it to work today and no one even noticed, there kinda Dunder heads about that stuff.
Stiffness I went medium.
I’ll be wearing this a lot to help break it in/form it my noggin.
When it came to sizing, went back for even after i measured my head, i ended up sending my tape from Pennman to him to help, we went couple mm and it fits great.

Anyone on the fence, any of his product are top notch.

I have my AB KotCS that I wear out most often here in the Great Pacific NorthWET.
But I love my grey Penman. I wear it on my “nicer” excursions so as to keep it in good shape.

Very nice! Yeah, something about grey hats just feel more formal. Maybe Advintage’s Smoke Gray color would be a good half formal half casual with it’s brownish tint.

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Took some more pictures today with the help of the Misses, no sun, and wasn't to
bad temperature wise, only in the 40's, felt nice for a change.
If the sun comes out this Sunday, I might try to get some in the sun.
The Master piece line truly is a nice lid, on par with Penman, that's to say if you presented
one of each, you might not be able to tell the difference.
Now the only critique on the hat is the front ribbon, not being in line with the crown to brim break.
I put in a question to see if this is something i can move down.
We'll see what Thomas says, as I see this on a lot of his SoC hats.

Mitch, thanks for the compliment.
As far as thickness, I’d say average and yes I’ll wear this year round as I’ve always worn my hats in the summer/humid weather, seeing as I love it hot, my mantra these day (winter) come on summer, give me that hot an muggy weather.
I wear my ToD from AdVantage in the summer too, not on the hottest of day’s I’ll admit i great my ABL in rabbet for a lighter weight fedora.

I believe it is a Steele & Jones ‘truck chase’ jacket.
I’ve been to the site and your hat looks so much lighter in his pictures, as you said. It looks like a different hat. January has been ‘archived’ so I think your hat will remain the one at the top ‘forever’.
I couldn’t see it mentioned in the thread but, on the site I think it says yours is beaver felt. Is that correct? Of your hats what’s the rabbit / beaver ratio? Thanks for your time.

Sorry to hijack a hat thread with jacket talk. I think the first pic you posted is my favorite hat of yours.

It's from a batch quite a few years ago of Striated Lamb. Problem was it was just to big for me, so caution to the wind, into the bath tub for a good long soak, dried some and then into the dry on med heat, you into the ol drier.
Came out as stiff as a board, lots of Pecard and it soften up, but best of all it shrunk just enough where it's wearable.
But it's still a heavy jacket and is my winter jacket.
It's stressed and has some cracks where the leather is a little peeled back, not a lot, just enough to give this jacket a real world adventure.

And far as my hat being on top forever, I wish. I'm glad he know has a brown hat to show people interested in a SoC with no turn, all he could show me were grey hats.
And cm289, all I can say is "you cheat Dr. Jones, you know fare, me not want to play" Ace of heart falls out of sleeve.......
Hey I love it when any thread I create goes awry.
Thanks to all, the hat is great and took a little weather today, tomorrow will be it's first nasty weather day.

Hey Croft, who made the jacket you’re wearing?
Mitch LaRue
Yup Mitch LaRue is correct, sorry no balloon's.If it's cool to do so, I wanna guess first that he's wearing a U.S. WINGS

So sorry Mr. ROTLA, but my S&J Truck is lighter in color and is in the shop having the flying squirrel taken care of along with a tare in side.I believe it is a Steele & Jones ‘truck chase’ jacket

Man am I with you on this! Give me warm weather every day and I wear my hats except if it’s so hot I’m boiling. The cold, wet weather does a real number on my aching bones. Although a nice Panama hat in an Indy style for those really hot days would be nice.Indiana Croft wrote:As far as thickness, I’d say average and yes I’ll wear this year round as I’ve always worn my hats in the summer/humid weather, seeing as I love it hot, my mantra these day (winter) come on summer, give me that hot an muggy weather. I think you should be good. It looks like he places pictures / info for each order finished. Yours was the last hat in January. As January has been ‘archived’, no more should be placed above it. To see it people will need to click on the blog link, on the site, then choose ‘January 2022’ on the right. I’ll need to keep reminding myself it’s there. As you say, it’s the only SOC / brown without turn there.Indiana Croft wrote:

Congratulations, Croft. That just looks superb.
Curious why you didn't want the turn?

Ha ha! Here in Central Florida the Mrs and I dream of the cooler days, it’s far too much of a hot and humid broil most of the year, too uncomfortable to even move! That said I do wear my two Fed 4 Deluxes regularly in the summer, especially my moonstone, to supplement the trusty Panama hat. Actually, other than the leather sweatband being noticeably warmer I don’t think fur felt is any hotter wearing than straw, and of course back in the day fur felt fedoras were common year round.lantzn wrote:Man am I with you on this! Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Well Hedji it’s like this.
I started out the quest for a Master piece from Thomas that was a given.
It was going to be beaver and it was going to be a SoC
I love what his work and the look to me is spot on.
But when i look at my collection, i have to say they all have the turn, even my KOTC from Steve has a look of a hat with a turn
And I was reading one thread where one member doesn’t like the turn. And it got me to thinking.
I asked Thomas if he’d ever done a SoC with no turn, turns out (ya thats a pun) he had.
They were not brown and I think i posed a link or how to see them somewhere in the thread.
I like what I saw, so that sealed, it.
SoC, Beaver, no turn, bow in the standard place over the ear (he’ll do it no turn and move the bow forward if you like) Dent in the front and the bump out on none bow side.
I’ve been wearing it every day and I catch my self when wearing it, and there’s a mirror or reflective surfaces, and I’m like, this is one freakin good looking hat.
Just have to get in the sun, for some brighter pictures, than and warm weather for a full gear pictures.
And Lantz, thanks for tweaking my picture, going to have to play with some of other pictures.

It's a gorgeous hat, for sure. I love my Temple of Doom from Thomas. I don't think it'll be my last AdVintage either.

Apologies, what is the ‘bump out on non bow side’? I’m looking, but I’m not seeing.

Attaching the ribbon to look like the hat is turned when it isn’t.

Re: MY FEDORAS AND YET I WANT ANOTHER
Thanks, but why is it on the non bow side? Isn’t the bow the ‘bump’? I’ve never heard the bump expression before.Hobbit Fedora wrote:Attaching the ribbon to look like the hat is turned when it isn’t.
