Penman Everyman
I'm planning on getting a nicer hat when my head stops growing, which won't be super long, and the Everyman seems like a smart choice. How durable are these hats? Can they take a beating of any kind or not?

Re: Penman Everyman
I suggest doing a 'search' for 'Everyman' in the Fedora section, and quite a few come up:
search.php?keywords=Everyman&terms=all& ... mit=Search" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Indiana Jeff

Re: Penman Everyman
If you're considering the Penman Everyman, by all accounts a fine hat, you may also want to take a look at the AdVintage Harrison, an equally fine hat (disclosure: I have 2 Harrisons and love them for their style, quality, durability and cost).Indiana augustus wrote:I'm planning on getting a nicer hat when my head stops growing, which won't be super long, and the Everyman seems like a smart choice. Both the Harrison and Everyman are 80%/20% rabbit-beaver mixes (which may come from the same supplier, according to several posts on this forum).
Main difference is price: The Everyman costs $300 with shipping (to US). The Harrison costs about $220 (including shipping to US).
Both hatters are top-notch. Having only bought from AdVintage, I can tell you Thomas Osygus delivers excellent customer service. No knock on Penman, of course -- he has many satisfied customers here, too. Both will give you a hat in the movie style of your choice.

With so many great options these days, you couldn't go wrong. But I think you made a smart choice and I bet you'll love your new Harrison.
Which movie style did you order?
Re: Penman Everyman
This is always the hardest choice, making a decision to go with one maker over another, but you have to do what you have to do...price is usually a big consideration, but you will not be disappointed with your Harrison. I have one and it is my go to hat!!
Congrats!!

By all accounts, it seems that the Everyman and the Harrison are the same hat. AdVintage has more options for the hat, such as a more accurate color, so I'd say you have chosen wisely. It is a very high quality factory made hat, much nicer than what Stetson and Borsalino are putting out these days. Post photos when it arrives. I'd love to see the color.

I also have an Advintage Harrison in Raiders sable and I absolutely love it. Good to see another Michigander on here.
Re: Penman Everyman
Heyo, a few years ago I got a Penman Everyman, which came in a box with a card stock ring attached to the bottom that held the hat in place, and after some research I was surprised to find that Penman had designed a box for the Everyman. Any idea why he stopped using it?

Adv does not sell the 80/20 anymore.

John's original intent was to undercut the AB Henry, which he just couldn't do with the box. I asked him once why not just offer it as an add-on option and he said it's already the entry-level hat and people wouldn't buy the box and he'd be stuck with stacks of boxes.IJJTM wrote:Heyo, a few years ago I got a Penman Everyman, which came in a box with a card stock ring attached to the bottom that held the hat in place, and after some research I was surprised to find that Penman had designed a box for the Everyman. Re: Penman Everyman
With John's current problems, I wonder if he's still selling the Everyman......though they're factory made, he would still have to shape them etc.
The 80/20 to me is a pretty good upgrade from an Akubra. I was leaning towards Adv but if they're not offering that anymore..... The Everyman it is, hopefully.

Re: Penman Everyman
I had emailed Penman about getting an Everyman a few days ago as I’m wearing my AB into the ground, presumably there are some in stock but unfortunately not in my size!
My backup was the Advintage, but I would have preferred a blend rather than 100% rabbit.
Best
Gerry

Re: Penman Everyman
We'll have to see down the road whether Penman restocks the Everyman or AdVintage brings back the blend. The supply chain in a lot of industries is still a disaster -- I've been waiting since January to get a new couch delivered after an initial estimate of 30 days. I know it took Thomas the better part of a year to restock the rabbit Harrisons. I can only imagine how long it will be before the Everyman is fully restocked. I don't see John scrapping it, they are pretty popular.

Re: Penman Everyman
Everyman is a great hat. Super high quality for a factory hat. Hope you can get a hold of one. Block shape seems good for TOD and LC.
Re: Penman Everyman
From my understanding it’s based on the KOTCS block, which is pretty close to Steve’s Raiders block. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Re: Penman Everyman
Mine has a bit too much of a curve to the sides of the crown for a Raiders. I briefly put a Raiders crease in it, but it didn’t look right. Pulls off an LC pinch much better. Very different than my AB Raiders shape.
Re: Penman Everyman
I got mine shaped to Raiders and I think it’s held up very well, only thing is that I think time has made it taper a bit.

Re: Penman Everyman
I wore mine to Disney World soon after I received it back in '19. It was October so the humidity wasn't too terrible, but the crown did taper quite a bit. I've tried to reshape it to get some of the taper out, but I haven't had much luck. In terms of quality and feel, it's an excellent hat.IJJTM wrote: I got mine shaped to Raiders and I think it’s held up very well, only thing is that I think time has made it taper a bit.
