Any interest still in Nowak jackets?

Post by Obi Sean Kenobi »

Hi all,

I have collected a number of Tony Nowak jackets over the many years I’ve been a member here.

I’m restoring an old car and need a bit of cash.

Is there any demand left for Nowak jackets? Pricing these days?

The one I’m thinking of letting go is my Raiders version in a thick, textured dark brown lamb.

Best,
Sean

YES! They are special, given that there are limited number out there. As to price, who knows? Generally about half the original price is what used jackets seem to go for. I suppose you could ask whatever you want and take offers? You should post some photos of the jacket. What size is it?

I’m accepting offers, but keep in mind:

1. You can buy an Aero at any time
2. Tony had the original patterns
3. Regrettably, because he was such a good soul, Tony won’t be making any more jackets.
4. Bernie hired Tony to make an actual movie jacket

Okay. But bear in mind that Steele and Jones are making a killer replica right now for nearly a third of what you are asking.

I'm not a 44, so not my concern. :TOH:

it's your jacket, you can put any price you want, and let the market decided. In my experience, even $500 is too high for indy jacket.

Well, no. Tony didn't have the original patterns. Nobody does. Tony did have access to an original that he was able to inspect and take some measurements of and had a great eye for replicating jackets. :TOH:

I would think you may be lucky to get $500-$700 for a TN jacket now, unless there is a person consumed by the idea that a Nowak is a must have at almost any price.

Definitely. There are other, more accurate repros of the Raiders jacket now (multiple, in fact), and the Crystal Skull jacket isn't in that high a demand.

Some measurements would be good. Is it an Indy I or Indy IV Nowak ? Nowaks are the best, I have two myself and still some of my favourite jackets.

I think $725 is the right price for this jacket, but it would have to go to someone who really wants it. The market for these jackets is so niche, as there aren't many of us out there who want one of these so badly, and even fewer who take a specific size. I'd say anyone who always wanted a Nowak Raiders and wears a 44 should make an offer. :TOH:

Even THAT is questionable, seeing as how there are so many details he didn't get right...

IMO, Tony got a lot right. I think he took some liberties to make the jacket more robust.

Honestly, I think 725 is a fair price point to start negotiating, assuming it's in a like new condition. In my opinion, 400 and below is way too low, whereas 1500 is just unrealistic.

Again, ASSUMING it's in a like new condition, you can't really discount the provenance of Tony being involved in the franchise. Unlike Wested, he worked with the same skeleton crew that produced the film jackets freshly after the movie he was involved in came out. Sure, Wested has Peter, but when he came around to making the repros, it was pretty inconsistent and going off a half forgotten memory. So yeah, if provenance matters to you, and it definitely will to some, then these jackets are in limited supply. Sure, you'll find folks that are more interested in beater jackets and hence won't be willing to spend that amount, but you get that with any hobby.

But for 1500? Too high, unless you get reeeeally lucky. Don't forget, Nowak was selling his jackets were for 600-1200(?), and that included tailoring the jackets to your measurements and design preferences. These personalization touches, which were nice for the original buyers, also devalued the jackets for resale in the same way that a personalized autograph devalues the autograph (unless you just so happen to share the same name, and in this case, measurements). And then there's the big issue of Indy IV not exactly being fondly remembered to the general public, which means the value of its memorabilia pales in comparison to the original trilogy to most folks.

So take it for what it's worth, but I personally think that 750 is a good point to start negotiating. 500 is probably the true value of a used, but like-new Nowak jacket, and maybe if Nowak IV ends up indeed being the final Indy movie, then these jackets may very well appreciate in time... but we're talking decades. And even then, who knows? Heck, screen used props from iconic tv series and movies from the 60s have been sold for less than a couple grand. These things are so hard to predict.

Best case scenario? A Nowak Indy IV jacket. Unused, and made to Ford's measurements. Then maybe you might find someone willing to do 1500. But I would try sell it on therpf or other similar broader collector forums. We here at CoW were spoiled for choice, and to be brutally honest, I think most here prefer practicality to provenance.
