AdVintage Harrison Fedora Hat - Smoke Grey

Post by michaeljcr »

Just ordered my first AdVintage Harrison Fedora Hat (Rabbit) in Smoke Grey. I’ve got three brown Indy hats (Adventurebilt, Adventurebilt Deluxe and Akubra Fed), but this is my first grey one for a while. Looking forwards to getting it. I’ll post pictures when it comes.

You'll find when you wear any color but brown, you get fewer 'HEY INDY!' comments. ;)

I really like the Advintage Harrison and the Penman Everyman (same hat). Such a great choice if you want to go with a factory made hat. Are you shaping it yourself or did you request a particular bash?

I’ll bash it myself. I’m not so worried about screen accuracy for this one, more looking for an everyday beater to wear this autumn and winter with my new Aero.

Hat man Thomas Osygus at AdVintage added the gray Harrison a couple of years back in response to customer requests as more and more of us discovered the great quality/price bang for the buck in his brown Indy Harrison lineup.

It's encouraging when hat makers pay attention and adjust their offerings accordingly. More choices, more happy buyers :TOH:

Yes, it’s great to have some choice. This grey looks interesting as well. Not too light, not too dark.

The hat arrived. Very nicely packed.

I’m overall quite impressed with the quality of the hat for the money. Perhaps not quite as nice as a Christy’s Adventure I ordered and sent back (didn’t like the ribbon colour), but good for the money. And this one is made in Spain, which is interesting.

On the downside, it seems more brown than grey. I knew it was a darker grey, but comparing it to my brown Fed, there’s not that much difference. I was hoping something a little more different. It’s also quite large. I ordered a 58, and this feels loose before bashing. Looser than my Akubra, for sure. And other size 58 hats I own. Also, nowhere on the hat is the size marked, so I can’t really check. Overall, I’m a little disappointed.

Some pics! The bashed hat is a recent brown Akubra Fed. No specific style, I just winged it. Indoor shots have terrible light, so the outside ones are better for colour difference.

Very nice looking example. Personally I like this shade as you’ll see it changes tints depending on what light it’s being viewed in.

It will also ‘tighten up’ the longer it’s worn due to the usual shrinkage of the sweat from perspiration and contact with your head. I’d rather them start out a bit loose than perfect as after a bit of time they get snug and you are forced to use a hat stretcher to get it back to a more comfortable size.

I totally approve what I see and read here!

All good points! It’s a shame they don’t put the size on the hat - it would make me feel better knowing it.s not actually a 59. Still, a new hat is always cause for celebration!

Did you give them an actual head measurement or a hat size when you ordered?

Re! M
Nope, but it’s not a custom job, it’s off the rack, so if it says 58 on the site I presume that’s what I’m getting, more or less. It’s probably my seventh Indy hat, so I’m pretty comfortably with my size now and several measuring devices later... It’s not massively too big, and my hair is currently short. Just odd they don’t add a size to an off the rack model. I mean, if you stacked them wrong, even an expert might get them muddled up.

No major issue, just my own pet peeve. It is a nice hat...

Sorry to imply I thought it was custom. The reason I asked was many times a vendor will take a supplied head measurement and take a tape to their off the rack hats to find the best/closest sweat in a hat to match.

HatsDirect has done this for customers in the past.

I was just curious if you had supplied them with your actual head measurement rather than just a 'size', and they may have found one in the size 58 pile that came close.

Apparently in your case it was the luck of the draw.

All good! :) I think once it’s bashed and worn a bit, it’ll be fine. They included some cork spacers, which are always welcome. Not all vendors think to add those little touches.

I like it, the color isn’t like the Train travel hat from KOTCS, but more like the grey Fedora from Raiders.

And you know the ol argument,is it grey or brown.
And with your comparison of the two hats I can see where the brownish hue may come out in certain light.
I think after awhile it’ll grow on you and it’ll become the go to hat.

When I bought my custom AdVintage, it to was a bit large, but has become snug enough over the past 1-1/2 years.

Looks awesome, wear it in good health.

I think that's a beautiful grey! I do think the brown hat is a little desaturated by comparison. That is to say, I think your brown hat is more grey, rather than your grey hat being sort of brown.

In any case, both nice looking hats! My new HJ was a little large too (1/2 size), but after wearing it for a bit and putting a little foam in there, it's shifted a little bit and now fits perfectly. Have you thought about putting a little hat foam in there?

It looks great in the later post with the pics. Side-by-side with the brown hat, the new one definitely looks gray.

I think when Thomas decided to add this new choice to the Harrison lineup, he chose a color close to the Raiders travel hat, which as we know was the subject of debate for years as to its true color. Gray with a hint of brown?

Have fun wearing it!

It's a versatile color. Advintage is known to run slightly big, but they snug up nicely in short order. I'm not sure if it's intentional, knowing the felt and sweatband will tighten up with use, or not. But the Harrison is a nice hat for the price. Probably somewhat classier/finer than a Fed, but probably not necessarily as durable.

I just sold mine less than a week after I got it. They do run big for sure. I ordered a 56 which was the same size as my Akubra which shrunk down pretty quick to probably a 55.5. It fit well with minimum padding. But that hat fit much better out of the box. Unfortunately the Harrison felt massive on my head.

Mine settled in to fit nicely, and I like it a lot, but the felt is much less substantial than my Fed Deluxe for about the same price. I’d consider a made to measure AdVintage one in a better felt in the future, I enjoy wearing this one and it’s a nice shape, but I probably wouldn’t buy another Harrison at this price point. I think the Akubra is the better quality hat.

Saving for a Herbert Johnson now, though! :)

The 80/20 blend Thomas used to have in stock was better. I hit mine with a liberal dose of stiffener and waterproofing spray and it has held up very well the past few years.

But yes, my advice over the years has been for pure cosplay the Harrison is probably better in terms of color and dimensions, but for durability and wearing without a care as an adventuring hat it's definitely Akubra.

Did some thinking about this. I had my new Akubra show up a few days ago. Hatsdirect measured it before sending and it was spot on the size I ordered. It fit better out of the box than the Advintage did. Noticeably better. My theory is the Advintage is made slightly oversized to account for shrinkage. Anyone have any insight into that thought?

Leather sweatbands are not really supposed to "shrink to fit" significantly as they do on Akubras. It would be atypical to cut the sweat oversized. More likely just normal production variance.

I started out on COW but after seeing several of the guys from the Fedora Lounge show up at the Queen Mary, I migrated to vintage clothing. Seems all my vintage fedoras are grey. Just my Indy hats are brown or sable.
