Goonies Hat

Post by IJJTM »

For a while I had thought that Robert Davi’s hat that he wore in Goonies was similar to Indy’s and sure enough on Herbert Johnson’s page they claim to have made his hat. My question is, does anyone know if any of the hats were reused from one of the Indy films?

Doubtful. Different studios and different production companies. HJ has been a major supplier of hats to the entertainment industry for decades; if there were a connection it could be an homage to Spielberg. The actual hats from Raiders and TOD were Lucasfilm's property, and Amblin most surely didn't raid Lucasfilm's costume archives. Plus the actual Indy hats were super beaten up by the end of production.

But making a movie is a lot like building a house -- layers upon layers of contractors and subcontractors and vendors. Just like you get houses built by totally different companies but have the same fixtures, Hollywood movies are the same way. All the major studios and their affiliated production companies contract with the same costume suppliers, who work with the same vendors. HJ is on a very short list of hatters that are very common in movies and tv when they need something bespoke.

Alright, thank you for the explanation.

From other sites, the whole point of the fedora being in Goonies was Spielberg's effort to plant as many 'Easter eggs' as possible of his films throughout the Goonies production.

The fedora was, indeed, one looking back at his IJ films.

The actor who wore it, Robert Davi, has told the story he 'stole it' from the Temple of Doom props and wore it, but that tale or its actual manufacture was never confirmed. He also said he 'kept it', but that, too, has never been confirmed. ;)

Would be great if they had another Goonies movies with the original cast (that are still alive) (God rest Sloth!) and in part of the adventure they come across an old Indy hat and whip maybe just as a small passing part in the movie. :-k
