I ordered my actual size and there’s just a little bit of wiggle room, enough for my hair right before I get it cut to my preferred length. Unless the leather shrinks a whole lot, I think it’ll be just fine. I have a hat jack just in case. I usually have the opposite problem and have to put foam in.

I emailed hatsdirect and they say order a size bigger because FedIV run a half size smaller. So confusing when I ordered an Akubra Campdraft and it was true to size but shrank a size.
The choice on the size is whats holding me back. What size did you order?

Oh awesome same size I want to get.
The ladies said that a 57 is really a 56.5 which made me almost order a 57. I ordered a 57 for my Akubra Campdraft and it was huge but shrunk down but its not tight enough for that Indy Cairo look.
Is your Fed 56 true to size?
What size does your head measure up to?
I measured my head cicunference to 55cm.

I wish I'd gone with fawn instead of dark brown. ](*,) The dark brown looks too... well... dark! And brown!
I always picture "the" hat looking like a faded tan. I dunno if that's "screen accurate," but it's the picture that's in my head.

Anyway, here's a scene from Indiana Jones Tears Down an Old Greenhouse:

Image

Obviously, I'm finally working through my "fear of messing it up" by actually wearing the hat while undertaking messy outdoor projects.

I tweaked the crown shape after looking closely at the photos of the "original Raiders hat" auction photos to get a better front-to-back slope.

I measure at a 56 right now. My hair is cut short, probably a long #2 clipper length right now.

Why not put some fullers earth on it to dust it up? That could lighten the color.

Anyone else have tips on getting the dark color lighter?

How is that Fed IV Deluxe I bought back in April looking, you ask? Well, thanks for asking! It's doing okay! :D

Here's a pic from today:

Image

Of course, that "doing okay" depends on how you feel about sweat stains on the hatband.

After seven... no, eight months of owning this hat, I am finally completely over any qualms I had about wearing it and not pampering it. I wore the hat a lot during the late summer and early fall months while working on outdoor projects. This is my grab-n-go hat for hiking as often as any others I own.

The fit keeps getting better. The hat has tightened up just a bit, so it stays put in the wind reasonably well.

The only odd thing is that sweat stain. I guess I have a sweaty head... or a sweaty forehead. Sweatband, plastic liner, fabric liner, hat body... and still the hat band has a creeping salt stain almost right in front. And "real life" stains don't look as cool as movie makeup stains.

Other than the stain in front, any dust, dirt, or mud I get on the hat brushes right off. I've worn it in the rain a few times and the hat has held its shape.

Another call-out: does anybody else still wear a Fed IV?

Thanks! To my surprise, the stains wiped right off with a damp sponge!

At the Chacchoben Mayan ruins near Costa Maya, Mexico:

Image

The structures date to about 700 AD. The site came to the attention of the government in 1972, excavation commenced in 1994, and the site was opened to the public in 2002.
Climbing to the tops of the temples is not allowed.

The Mk VII bag is a Magnoli.

My first Fed is on it’s way from The Land Down Unda! Super excited. This is my first real Indy hat. I know it’s not Penman or S&J but my history teacher budget just won’t allow for those kind of purchases. Will let y’all know when it arrives.

So after an ordeal with the Post Office I finally got my Fed IV today. ImageImage

Got it out of the box and wore it around for a bit before putting a LCish bash on it

Image

But quickly decided to go with a raidersish bash with no turn.

Image

Image

Image

Still a work in progress (especially the brim) but I think it’s off to a good start.

Interested to see what you gents think. Feel free to be honest, I’m open to constructive criticism.

Sweeet! Nice clean bash right from the get-go! It looks fantastic!

I see the hand-written note from Hats Direct there in the box. I thought that was a nice touch when I received my Fed IV.

The brim on my Fed IV doesn't want to hold any kind of shape, so I've given up and am just letting it do its own thing.
You may have more luck, though, because your crown pinch and dents look really solid.

Hope to see more photos as it gets some wear.

Congratulations on the new arrival!

I’m pretty pleased with bash so far. I feel like it’s got a decent Raiders vibe.

Going to just start wearing it and working on the brim. Might put a little steam to the brim this evening.

Question for those of you that have had a Fed for some time. Does the Fed felt ever soften up and become more malleable? Get the (or close to the) Raiders hat felt? If so how long did/does it take?

For myself I don’t baby my hats but I don’t thrash them either. But I would say, wear your hat every day rain or shine for two years and it will be nicely broken in. Soft, flexible and fitted perfectly to your head.

I just had this hat arrive today. You did a great job on shaping it. Did you use steam to shape the brim and do the raiders turn? Appreciate any advice. Thanks!
