New piece of gear - The Pants

Post by bearbeast »

A while ago I posted on here, asking about a pattern for Indy pants. As I couldn't find one in the end, I took apart a pair of cheap khakis and created the pattern myself, adapting it where needed. I mostly added the front folds, replaced the zipper with buttons and added pocket flaps in the back.

I made them out of thin wool. It's veeery nice and ITCHY. The colour is a bit off, but I really enjoy the look of it.

I can now say that making shirts is definitely easier. The pockets and the fly were the most problematic, pull-your-hair-out, parts of the process. Here are some pictures of me wearing them (and one of the shirts I made), coupled with the lovely Andrea Tognarelli Raiders fedora.

All the above pictures in high-resolution and a couple of detailed ones of the pants can be seen here:

Thanks for looking! Hope you enjoyed it! :TOH:

Looks good. You are the first I have heard of actually making the pants! Now just source some cavalry twill and you'll be good to go.

Thanks! The next step is getting better material and making two-three pairs of pants. I got the wool from my mother-in-law. She had it lying around and when she heard I wanted to try making pants offered it to me gladly.

Thank you, Wotalark! :) I'm not much of a tailor, but last year my wife bought me a sewing machine as a gift and I've been learning to use it. My main hobby is making stuff out of leather, which I usually sew by hand, or in case of whips, I plait.

Bear

Thank you very much! :TOH:

I have a very long projects list, but a few of the Indy related ones (except a couple more pairs of pants):

- Raiders gun belt
- 7-8 feet whip
- easy clip-on whip holders (instead of a belt loop they will have a clip, like pistol holsters)

And maaaybe... (very optimistic and wishful thinking, I've never done such things before):
- Jacket
- Boots

Impressive work on the pants. I suggest adding just a touch of length to get more of a break at the cuff.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a clip-on whip holder. I like the idea.

Thank you, Indiana Jeff! I made them a bit short, unfortunately, you are right. I didn't measure twice.... ](*,) It's an improvement I am keeping in mind for the next pair. And I hope to find Cavalry Twill, also.

I will definitely post the whip holder on here, when it's done!

That's an impressive projects list. I also like the idea of the clip-on whip holster. I shall look forward to seeing how your projects develop.

I hope to have both whip-holder and gun-belt finished next weekend and the latest. I am missing the brown dye, just finished my reserves.... And on the way I have some Indy-ish buckles.

I taught myself how to do a military hem, to adapt thrift store pants, but making pants from scratch is impressive. Well done.

I've been making all kinds of stuff since I was a kid, but the pants were definitely quite a challenge. I didn't expect them to come out as nice as they did. :TOH:
