A Modern Day Indy Gun?

If Indy was around today and had to carry a handgun, what model do you think he'd carry?

Let's make this interesting. Some rules --

1) Assume he can't carry what he already carries in the movies.
2) Give one revolver answer.
3) Give one semi-auto answer.

If you're feeling extra generous, justify your answer. And yes, class/style is always a good justification.

Of course, rules were meant to be broken

Hmmm, I would just go with Colt 1911 Govt. model. It is strong and very elegant, with military background.

I am not much into modern revolvers, so I couldn't choose one. Even from Indy's I only like the Webley.

Have to agree with the M1911 as well.

Perhaps a 2017 Pflager-Katsumata Series D might make sense.

Yep, I'm used to the abbreviation PKD so didn't get it when I saw the full name.

To answer the actual question, I would think anything that is chambered in 9mm. With all his globe hopping, he'd want to carry something that he could easily get replacement ammunition where ever he ends up.

Keeping it American, he’d carry a 4” SW625 mountain gun in .45 Colt and a SW M&P 9pro 5” barrel.

His primary, I think, would be a solid S&W .357 revolver. I doubt he would be picky about the exact model.

As a backup auto, my vote would be a Springfield XD .40 Cal.

I was kinda’ thinking he might like a Colt Defender. My only reason is that Nathan Drake also carries one.

Caliber...doesn't. really. matter.

Indy isn't a gunfighter. He uses a gun to get himself out of trouble. So he's not really worried about carrying lots of reloads. Plus he's pretty content to either pick up or "upgrade " his arsenal with whatever comes to hand.

Were it me, I'd take either a S&W 325 in .45 or a 627pc in .357.
You'd get either 6 rounds of.45acp or 8 rounds of .357/.38spl. More than enough for most occasions.

Now let's talk autos. With 9mm being the most popular round on the planet, I'd say that's good enough. From there it's all personal preference. Like I said Dr. Jones isn't a gunfighter.

I'd be inclined toward either a beretta 92 variant or a Cz 75 variant.

Just my 0.02 YOMV.

I wonder, too, how Indy might feel browsing S&W's current "Classics" selection. His 1917 isn't there... What might he go for as second best? A model 10?

They say a Ruger will almost never fail on account of their being overbuilt. I’m sure Dr. Jones would appreciate that reliability. Anybody have any experience carrying their real world guns in Indy style flap holsters?

I have my sportsman 999 9 shot .22 revolver in a flap style holster I made using veg tanned bridal leather. works wonderful.

I can wear my Ruger LCR .38 in my Indy holster. Fits perfectly. The holster is a bit big, though, so if I don't wanna flaunt my gun I don't use the flap holster. For the woods or travel or something, the flap holster is nice and durable.

I think he would carry a M1911 for semi-auto. Perhaps a Ruger SR9.
Though not necessarily modern I think it would be cool to see Indy carry something a little cowboyish so maybe a Ruger Vaquero for his revolver.

I used to carry while hiking in Washington, but never do see wildlife aside from the occasional mule deer. so don't carry anymore.

Okay, I'll weigh in. I hesitated to do so until now only to show that if you ask 100 gun guys for their input on absolutely anything firearm-related, you'll get darn near 100 different opinions.

That said, I simply can't imagine a modern-day Indy anything that would capture our imaginations as much as his gear does now.

We've seen similar "what if" threads about modern gear. It just doesn't work for me. Can you picture a Patagonia/Columbia/North Face-clad Dr. Jones packing a soulless Glock in some nylon or Kydex holster? (No offense to polymer pistol shooters, myself included).

As Woodsrunner mentioned, Indy's not a gunfighter. That undoubtedly affects the choices of weapon, ammo, and holster (sorry folks, a cavalry-style flap holster is considered a widowmaker in the gunfighting world). If I could see Indy with any other pistol, it would be the 1911. Classic enough to fit in with the genre, and modern enough to serve as respectable personal protection well into the 21st century if so imagined.

The 20th century gear gives the Indy movies (and the character) a warm feeling and a great sense of adventure.

Leather, steel, brass and wood is what makes the adventure great.

Certainly. After he used that P-38 on the tank he looked down at it mighty impressed. Germany also issued Hi Powers (albeit in smaller numbers) that were made in Nazi occupied Belgium. I think a practical guy like Indy would probably see right past it. After all the German's were at the cutting edge of almost everything back then. Heck without Nazi science nobody would have gotten to the moon anywhere near 1969.

But I see your point!

Hey ChrisMD, naw I don't think he was as impressed with the p-38 as he couldn't believe he shot three Germans with one bullet !!! Lol !!! My toss in the ring is for auto: 1911A1 and wheel gun: 4"-6" Colt or Smith in large caliber prob .45. The revolver, at least back in Indy's days, was more dependable, less parts so easier to maintain and would work if dirty. MHO ... what do you guys think ??

As much as I love Sig, my duty issued weapon is a P226, I’d have to go with a 1911 as well for Indy. It’s the perfect balance between the adventures from the days of yore and bridges well with the modern day semi-autos. Just my 2 cents.

Indy is an internationalist so, despite being an American, he isn't in thrall to all things American. He chooses practicality and provenness.

His auto would be a Beretta 92F or a Sig Sauer P226 in 9mm and any .40 S&W Revolver

EDIT: Having given this more thought, his primary would be either the SIG P226 or a CZ 75. His back up? A Ruger LCRx 5430

Revolver, I'd say a Colt Python in .357 mag. That or if he stayed S&W I can see him getting a giggle from carrying a S&W500 4".

OK I'll Play! I'm going to take the cinematic approach to this question. Just as they did in LC with giving Indy the Webley because it was big, unusual, and cool looking, I would imagine that the film makers may decide to take the same approach with a Modern Indy.

And if I imagined Indy traipsing around Europe I would include the CZ 75. I mean no disrespect to Gaston Glock and his adherents, but the CZ
75 is a better fit for Indy, IMO.

As someone who carries a P226 daily I second this

But a nice 1911 makes sense too. Something like a Springfield Loaded

As for a backup gun. I'd say a S&W snubnose 60 or 340

In a sense, I could also see Indy having a N-frame Smith & Wesson in .357 Magnum. One of those registered models before the numerical designations. More versatile than his trusty .45 revolver. (I did not say more effective because that is a whole other debate, but I digress.)

I would guess something like a Taurus Judge. Shoots .410 shotgun shells for snake killing (Very Important to Indy!) and .45 Long Colt shells for shooting other things. Versatile gun that would work for Dr. Jones!

I have rethought this thread more than once lately. Given what we all know about Indy getting in all kinds of adverse weather and what have you, a Glock or Sptingfield XD in 9mm would be practical and pragmatic.

Yes, we can discus the merits and short comings of the 9mm ad astra, but the 9mm is ubiquitous and almost always available.

My guess about Indy's choices has always been that he is a believer in a big bore defense revolvers for their reliable stopping power and function. The Hi-Power is a back up weapon that fires a less lethal round but with high capacity. It is the back up because he doesn't trust 9mm or autos.

The chopped HE is essentially the lightest, simplest way to get a big bore revolver in the '30s. So he may choose something like a very modern alloy framed 329 revolver, but I think that the revolver is also a link to Indiana's past - so I would go with a more modern 4" blued revolver, the fixed sight .41 magnum model 58:

If the revolver is his past, the auto is his newfangled modernism. Depending on the era, I would suggest one of the modern, extra capacity autos from various eras: The HK VP70Z with 18 rounds of 9mm, the Gen 1 Glock 17 with 17, or an early FN Five-seveN and 20 of 5.7. It's all about capacity for the back up gun, and contrast:
