Did any film's jackets have inner facings?
Forgive the noob question, and I assume the answer is "no," but I've been curious about this for a while. While I understand it's nearly everyone's least favorite look (and a very different jacket than the previous three), I just noticed a screenshot in the "Fedora" section of Indygear of Crystal Skull where it looks to me like there might be a facing showing. Anyone know?

The original trilogy's jackets had no leather facings. The only one with facings was the CS jacket.kozmoedave wrote:Forgive the noob question, and I assume the answer is "no," but I've been curious about this for a while. Wow, so CS DID? I never knew. Figured as much about the first three. That's interesting.

This is a decision made by Pollack. He wanted Indy to wear a 'real' jacket over a 'costume' jacket hence the facings and choice of skin

Well, it was more a case of the Disney jacket had facings and it was a copy of that.... so...

Yes exactly and because Bernie liked that design so much he copied it because it was durable...so....
He wanted durbale items for Indy, Hat as well.

So, if one wanted a "more durable" jacket, would you go with the facings? If YOU wanted a functional Indy jacket for use in the real world?

Leather facings cancelled the risk the zipper could be damaged the lining, but with facings, depended the quality of leather skins, you have a little more weight jacket ..

Of course it's also true that the A2 jacket (on which the Indy design is largely based upon) also has no facings. So do a number of other leather jackets I've owned - it isn't just costumes that do this.Holt wrote:This is a decision made by Pollack. We did hear that Mr Pollack wanted the entire costume to be made heavier and from thicker, more durable materials as you indicate. Pants and shirt too.
To me the great joke in all this is that the Pollack costume looks more fake than the cheaper, "faker" costume form the first film. The Raiders jacket looks better, fits better and seems more worn in a genuine way than the heavy predistressed cowhide Pollack chose.
Re: Did any film's jackets have inner facings?
I prefer facings but they don't make much difference except to the finished feeling of the thing. I have never snagged my zipper in the lining in an Indy jacket. But if the lining were poorly fitted and a bit over sized and loose, as Westeds sometimes are, it could happen.kozmoedave wrote:So, if one wanted a "more durable" jacket, would you go with the facings? The A2, one of the most enduring leather jackets in history, didn't have facings and it hasn't mattered for 70 plus years.

Another thing facings eliminate is the infamous 'demon roll' we experience with the left hand side of the jacket without facings tend to do, rolling outward and to the left when open or practically zipped.
I have never snagged a lining of a jacket without facings either, but also prefer them in my jackets as well.

I figured everyone around here, if they had their druthers, would opt for no facings.

Nope, not this writer.
If you wear these jackets on a regular basis, that facing really does what it was designed for....keeping the lining out of the zipper, and keeping the front of the jacket from rolling outward when not zipped.
That said, I DO wear my G&B's regularly, which do NOT have the facings, but prefer facings in my USW's and Magnoli as they stay in place better.
Just my preference.
