In an interview with Mary Hart on ET, around the time CS was released or just before, HF called them, 'sweaty work clothes', and that about sums it up. I found that on an archaeological dig site, khaki pants are actually more comfortable to work in than jeans. Undoubtedly, that is one reason men of that era chose to wear khakis, they were practical and f.o.m. There would have been a surplus military supply store somewhere close by, and let's just say that in 1934, or so, he bought several pair for next to little, a few bags, shirts, pants? Gonna' need it in the field..? Similar if not the same items?

To continue the line of thinking from the discussion on the one hat scenario, undoubtedly, you would want to rotate hats? Maybe a dress brown and gray, then a beater for use in the field? If something gets too old or not a presentable, just change it out? Eventually you find what works best for you. With a fav. shirt or jeans, they are so lived in that they become a part of you. They were going for a very 'lived in' look. I bet HF wore them so much on and off the set and before shooting that they did just that.

Jacket? I like the Sears idea, because as most of you know, the older generations shopped-at-Sears! Surplus military? Make it up as you go....

I remember Indy's brown fedora looking pretty spiffy when he was 'escorted' to Donovan's apartment, visiting his dad's house with Marcus and also on their arrival in Venice. Possibly a new hat or a reblock and cleaning of his old one? Who knows? One thing is certain, that particular hat had the stuffing kicked out of it by the end of the movie!

Indian Bones was shot in the LEFT arm.... After the jacket was shredded in the truck chase he undoubtedly got a new one or had it made. I like the work clothes idea. An archaeologist who regularly digs in the field would have std. gear for the field.

I like to think his hat is the same hat he was given as a kid in Last Crusade. This is the same hat throughout all the films. That is why he is so desperate to grab it back in Temple of Doom inside the trap room with the sliding door coming down. It had sentimental value to him haha.

I agree with Texan and quite a few others, these items saw severe wear and I think S & L ( Spielberg and Lucas) didn't expect you to think he was able to keep and reuse is outfit from outing to outing, they were shooting for an image and that worked.

I thought that thats what they wanted us to think too. But the hat he's given as a kid is clearly different from the hat in the rest of the movie. Totally different ribbon.

"The King is dead. Long live the King....." sort of thing, as the 'crown' was taken off one head, then placed on the next in line.

It was the act, and not the item, that was key in that scene.

That was my read too - and well put.

I think Indy risked his arm for his hat in ToD because 1) it was a cool sequence 2) Indy isn't Indy without the fedora - so it's a question of identity.

I agree on both counts.

There's an almost identical scene in Raider's where Indy risks his arm to save his bullwhip. It's just something he doesn't want to be without or leave behind.
