Fed IV (dark brown) standard vs. deluxe: color difference?
Question for anyone who has (or has seen) both: Is there any noticeable color difference between the dark brown Fed IV standard vs. deluxe?
I saw at least one note here on COW saying the deluxe has a little more red in the color. And is either one closer to the movie hat color?
Thanks!

I have both and while there IS a noticeable difference in the feel and finish of the felt, and a visible "texture" difference, there is no color difference that I can see.

Thanks, Ridgerunner
I figure if I never get my hands on a deluxe, I won't know what I'm missing!
I'm happy with the regular Moonstone Fed IV I already have.

True, as I know when ever I finally obtained my first Deluxe, I never went back to the standard Fed.

I own a Fed Regular and I had a Deluxe too, and I can guarantee that there is a light difference of color between both.
Fed Regular is more chocolate color and Fed Deluxe aims towards the grey color...
Fed Regular (with fuller's earth):
Fed Deluxe:
The Fed regular is more accurate on color, for me...

Thanks again, Ridgerunner. The pics were helpful.Ridgerunner58 wrote:here is a comparison laying the two brims over each other.
The Deluxe is on the left.
I can't really see much of a color difference although the one on the right MIGHT be a touch redder.
Thanks, too, to Michaelson and Didier.
All you guys with your Fed IVs are an evil influence! I ordered a dark brown standard yesterday
(At least I resisted also ordering a Campdraft at the same time!)

Why? They're nice hats too, and the original hat many members (Steve Delk included) experimented with back in the old days to create a correct Indy fedora.

Akubras are VERY nice hats. Especially for the money, but they'd still be nice hats at $200.
I have several dating back over 30 years. They look good and they're tough as nails. You won't be disappointed.

This will be my second Fed IV -- and my 13th Akubra since I got interested in hats about 6 years ago and stumbled onto the Fedora Lounge and COW. Lots of helpful info and guidance from hat veterans like you has been invaluable.

Michaelson, you have NO idea how close I got to getting a silverbelly Campdraft at the same time!Michaelson wrote:Why? They're nice hats too, and the original hat many members (Steve Delk included) experimented with back in the old days to create a correct Indy fedora.

But I am literally running out of closet space for hats. And as nice as the Campdraft is, other than the bound edge it wasn't going to look much different from my sand/silverbelly Akubra Bobby I restyled as a fedora with the brim trimmed to 3" X 2.75" and thin ribbon I recently added to it.
So, even though it's tough to say "No" to a cool new hat, I decided to skip it. But I am looking forward to the new brown Fed IV

Howard, you NEVER run out of closet space for hats.
Well, MAYBE you do, but don't let your family know that.
That said, sometimes a departure from the standard Indy style fedora is a refreshing change. Something to keep in mind.

You're absolutely right. That's partly why I converted 2 westerns (including the aforementioned Akubra Bobby) into non-Indy fedoras, as an experiment. I like the way they came out!Michaelson wrote: ... sometimes a departure from the standard Indy style fedora is a refreshing change. Something to keep in mind.

And I do still have 8 Akubra westerns in various colors and styles.
(and that Campdraft is still whispering its siren call to me...)
