Any interest in cast guns from a Bapty replica?

Post by Trebor »

My Bapty replica will be ready in a month or so and I'm toying with the idea of making a mold off of it and offering cast guns. My replica gun is based off a HE 2 and will have the correct grips, barrel length, and front sight. All those features will show in the cast. It would be solid, with no moving parts.

This is NOT a offer to sell or even to set up a list or anything. I just need some general idea of anyone is even interested in a cast from a "correct looking" Bapty replica. If no one is interested, there's no reason to do it. If there is interest I'll start a thread in the FS forum and go from there. But, I figure this forum is a better place to judge if there is ANY interest at all.

Is this something people are interested in, at all? I know many will answer, "Depends on the price" and I have no idea what the price would even be yet. But, even "Depends on the price" lets me know if there is ANY interested.

So, what do you guys think?

I am interested, but as you mentioned above, it depends on the price.

Seeing as there are nearly no options for the Bapty model, I'm surprised there hasn't been more interest expressed.

I am interested in a new, clean casting.

There has been interest in the past by several vendors who proposed such a project, but they all ran into obstacles from one direction or the other and gave the projects up.

Were the problems due to customs regulations? I hear it's very difficult to ship "weapons" overseas... I assume even a toy replica of a gun could present some issues.

International shipping always poses a problem. I think getting a high quality S&W model to cast from was a road block as well.

As I recall, customs was one issue, but S&W took a dim view of a recast of one of their weapons.

There's no problem with casting a Webley, as the company is essentially out of business, but Smith is not, so trying to do a legitimate cast always seems to hit a wall, especially a good casting.

Yep, that's the Stembridge model. Artsee does great work.

The only Bapty replica I know of is from Western Stage Props. I have one and the mold is old and not very clean.

I had never given much thought about getting a gun for my Indy gear until a few days ago when I reckoned that I wanted a holster; but, what good is an empty holster. Count me in as an interested party.

How much cleaning or cutting away or filling in is needed on one of those?

It doesn't require any clean-up or filling, per se. There's no bubbles or gaps. It's just the casting seems sort of grainy. Almost if you made a casting from a rusty gun rather than a new one. I'll try to get some pictures to show what I mean.

I don't even have the replica finished yet!

The grips are on the way, and the gunsmith is lined up. A friend wanted to shoot it before it gets sent out and we're getting together at the end of Sept so it'll probably go out to the gunsmith the first week in October.

God only knows how long he'll have it. It's a pretty straightforward job, but I've learned never to trust estimates for custom work.

There is no solid ETA on the project, or even a solid price. It does like look there is enough interest for me to pursue it, which is all I wanted to know at this point.

My gun should work as a good master.

At this point, I have no intention to ship outside the U.S. due to various headaches with Customs, etc. Unless someone else is willing to do all the work to show that it's OK to ship something like this to specific countries I won't have the time to figure all that out.

I like the Bapty over the Stembridge, so I'd be interested.

I'd have an interest as well, I went with one awhile back, he tried to hard to have parts separate, although non-operating.
But like Michaelson said. Road blocks.
But just solid casting, would it just be the gun minus the grips?
Look forward to this project to see where it leads.

Thanks for the offer.

Current plan would be to cast the grips mainly because the correct grips are pricey and hard to find.

Here's a couple of (not great) pictures of my Bapty. You can see how it's just sort of grainy.

Just wanted to update:

Financial considerations kept me from sending the gun to the gunsmith. Frankly, I just didn't have the cash for such a luxury.

I now have a magazine editor who wants an article on the conversion to a prop gun replica. Since the pay will cover the cost of the gunsmith work, I'll be sending it out soon, probably next week. (I still have to pay the gunsmith up front but knowing I'll be recouping the money in a few months makes this doable with our budget).

After I get it back I do plan to make casts and I'll let everyone know how that goes. I'll likely make and offer casts of a Browning High Power as kind of a test run first.
