I figure an Indy backpack deserves period camping gear, so... Just got a (WWI) Model of 1916 bacon can and a (WWI) condiment tin (holds 3 days coffee in one end, three days sugar in the other, and a cap *in* one cap to hold the salt ration). I wish I knew a place that does hot tin dipping- I've cleaned and sandblocked them down to good gray metal. The sort of thing any Indy type would have on him in that era...
There are some amazing metal spray paint these days. I really like the Rustoleum Bright Coat Metallic Finish line. I tried their Chrome and a few coats yielded amazing results. Gone are the days of chrome paint just looking like regular silver paint. I'm sure there's something that would match a hot dipped galvanize look.

I appreciate the good word about paint, but since food is involved... I've emailed one tinner's business, no reply though. The ones I can find seem dedicated to tinning worn copper pans, or electronics parts...

Does the ruck come with the pouch for holding a folding sleep mat? How wide a mat- 20, 22 inches? Is the mat still available?

Folding sleeping mats can be found here: http://www.raeer.com/shopexd.asp?id=30356. They are the original version used by the German army and are not very comfortable IIRC.

So that's what the internal pocket is for.

I may have to get one of the mats just to give my bag some structure and padding on the back.

Yeah, good for the padding, but a pain if you're supposed to sleep on these things. Out in the woods. In the middle of the night. Ah, army service. ;)

I have found these as well on ASMC.de. I use them for my German mountain packs from the '90's.

They also must be out of stock. I'm only finding the camo version with the plastic connectors. The correct number is MFH 30303B

Interesting!

Those strap connectors, the ones that release by squeezing with two fingers... what are they called? Can one buy simple straps with such connectors, from perhaps a foot up to several feet?

Thanks for the info!

You can buy these straps and the quick-release-buckles separately, shouldn't be a problem. Try eBay or your local outdoor store.

This one with those type straps are the more modern version of the 30303B bag. Both are made by MFH. As stated you can buy those types of connectors and straps all over the place you can even find used ones at Goodwill on many of the cheap backpacks and things like that.

Looks like they may have gone back to the browner color, which is my preference.

I ordered one of the new ones. It is definitely the lighter "brown-olive" color like the one on the right - not the forest green color on the left. (I have one of those too.) :TOH:

It's definitely a mix between the 2 colors in my opinion. Green for sure, but nothing like that forest green version.

Here are the two versions in the 107 degree sunlight with my TN CS jacket and Penman #198.

This is the older, greener one.

And this is the newer more olive colored one

NICE color? It really looks close to the color of the bag in the church/prison room in South America.

I think quite close. I much prefer the more muted olive color. Now it just needs longer straps . . . ;)

Hi all

I feel like a very latecomer to this thread which seems to have been going for years.

The bags seem easy enough to get hold of but is anyone making the long leather straps and how easy is it to replace the canvas ones that the bags come with please?

I also wondered if anyone is selling the leather patches?

thanks

I sell both. The long straps are all leather that stitch onto the canvas which just goes over the shoulder just like the originals. I just finished zhund's "KZ" order above and a customer is sending me their new bag directly from the vendor. Save on shipping that way.

Just to say I had real fun speccing this with Lantz.
It' is currently in transit.

We had a great debate about what colour it is, green or brown. It really depends on the light you take the photo in it seems.
Had it shipped straight from M1st to Lantz so can't wait to see it "in the canvas"!

This is probably the most accurate photo of the current MFH bag and is Wotalark’s before I add my leatherwork. At lease on my screen anyways. It very close to the army green drab uniforms.
