Possibly too obscure, even for here...

Bags, Boots, Shirts and all other gear should be discussed here.

Possibly too obscure, even for here...

Post by Pygar »

I was watching TOD today and noticed several items... in the plane. They looked interesting, so I thought I'd ask about them.

In the plane, in the cockpit and in the fuselage, there are maps stuck on the wall. My copy wasn't too sharp, but I was wondering if anyone had ID'ed them.

Also- over the door in the rear which I suspect was a toilet- the one where there were no more parachutes?- that one- there was what appeared to be a Vargas girl pic,or at least one in that style. Has this been identified, by any chance?

And I wanted to "ask before I asked" but am not quite certain who to ask... I just got done watching "Secrets of the Incas". the film that clearly inspired the Indiana Jones character. Terrific film, and I don't usually watch films that old by choice... Heston's character carries a bag I'd like to ID, which is much bigger than Indy's, and is leather starting about half way down. Very distinctive. He also wears an odd leather jacket with an odd round logo on it, and a drum-shaped canteen. I don't know if I am upsetting anyone by asking, here, since this is only a forebear to the Indy movies, but where else am I going to find bag and leather jacket experts? Has anyone else here seen the movie, and if so, been able to ID these things? Feel free to PM as I don't wish to cause any more friction than my curiosity is already likely to cause...

Good questions about TOD. I don't recall any discussions about those pieces, but you just may set off a flurry of new research for members. :)

As for the Secret of the Incas, lots of discussions over the years as Harry was an inspiration for our own Dr. Jones.

Here's a thread from '08 that has some other links contained. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=32416&hilit=incas" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The film has been out of print for so long it's hard to find decent pictures of any variety. Though I found the movie in 10 parts on youtube in pretty good resolution that'll give us options for screen grabs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X33ActK3 ... C5&index=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I'm sure some of our eagle eyed members will be able to identify the bag.

The movie was released in 1954 so searching for WWII military issue bags may be a good first step.

My guess on the bag is a World War 1 officer's musette bag.

WPG sells this model:

Hello Pygar, Charlton Heston plays Harry Steele in Secret of The Incas and he is wearing an A-2 USAAF jacket with some sort of an emblem ( a squadron or group insignia, from what I remember it looked like it was a Navy Felix the Cat for fighters F4F and F6F from what I know, could be wrong). You got me on the bag but if and when I watch it again (I own a copy on DVD) I'll be on the look out. Hope this helps. :TOH:

P.S. If you (or any of you) are a fan of Happy Days you'll notice in the beginning of the movie when all the tourists arrive (and I believe later in the movie) a young Marion Cunningham (Marion Ross) appears, enjoy !!

My thanks to all!

The bag ( I just re-watched the movie!) *is* the musette bag, beyond reasonable doubt. The jacket logo is clearly a painted-over logo of the ferry command listed in the other thread. I'll have to look around at hats to confirm if Heston's is the Australian hat the other thread mentioned. The small plane Harry steals (no pun intended) is beyond me- it seems to have "Super Car?????" written on it as a model name. And the Golden Maguffin is rather large for a prop replica, so not much point in wondering about it.

Later this month Get TV will be showing "Zotz", which I saw part of, once, as a child- I remember very little about it. But it's about the size of a prop that might be made and stuck on any good "Indy's Desk" display... assuming both sides were shown. I have to wonder if I will be able to enjoy a movie starring "Mr. Bickley"... And if my remaining eyesight and meager skills are up to the job... I read part of the book once- let's just say you wouldn't want the same powers he wound up with, as it would lead to a very lonely life!

I knew one of our military historians would be able to ID the bag. :TOH:

In looking up ideas for my leather work, I like to go back to old, vintage designs. I come across a LOT of bag types, especially military bags.

The screen cap jumped out as one of those messenger/musette styles I remember seeing.

(Aside: I'm considering taking a WW2 musette, which relied on 1936 suspenders or a shoulder strap for carrying, and adding leather straps to make a leather/canvas daypack.)
