I love it - and I am going to say the same thing everyone says.... it looks so big on my head

Image

I don't know how to position it on my head so that it doesn't look huge. And I know I don't have a small head. Indy wears it jammed down to his ears, right?

Image

David Garrison was amazing! He worked with my deadline - he worked with my finances - he even had a death in the family during the process and he still came back swinging! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! stand up guy!

It'll probably look "less big" to you in time.

Or if it doesn't, you could always go on a double cheeseburger diet for a few months. That'll fix it right up. :TOH:

Relax! Your hat is not tooooooo big...and, you are not too small for it! Remember -- firstly that the SOC is so relaxed that it looks oversized to begin with -- ie: Watch "ROTLA" again -- it looks big on Ford too! I think this hat is really nice and truly looks good on you -- you just need to 'emotionally' grow into it and it will be yours and you will be 'wearing the hat' and 'it' will 'not be wearing you.' Patience buddy! Great hat! Great look! It will become yours, in the space of time you allow it to be. In simple terms: 'Hat good!' 'Hat on you -- good! :TOH: !' W>

Get someone else to take a pic of you from a little further away to get a better idea of how it looks on you and how the proportions really are.

A picture from about 12 feet away will give you the best view as to what everyone else sees when you wear the hat...

so my tips have been

1. lose the undershirt
2. tighten the whip coil
3. roll up the sleeves higher
4. grow my beard out
5. get a little more dirty
6. possibly look at new pants (better color - better fit)
7. straighten the hat on my head

But that hat looks ok now? David had contacted me about possibly adjusting it.

Lookin' great, Mojo! Thanks to your thread, I sent my Garrison back to David for a SOC makeover.

I know you mentioned that your full kit pic is a trial run, so excuse me if I'm speaking out of turn. Some easy-to-do suggestions:

First, try a V-neck undershirt. I'm like you - I'm used to something underneath, and I actually stretch the V-neck as low as I can to go as covert as possible. I'm actually researching underarm stick-on pads to prevent deodorant stains while allowing the SA unbuttoned SOC look.

Second, if you wanna go a bit more SA on the web belt buckle, soak it in household ammonia until the 'quartermaster' lacquer coating starts flaking off of the face. You can help off the rest. The buckle will eventually tarnish on its own, and I helped mine along a bit by wiping it across my sweaty brow.

Third, adjust your bag strap lower if you can so the buckle sits somewhere between your shirt pockets, and the bag just below the web belt.

I find that one of the best research resources are screen caps of the movie or scene 'look' you're going for. 'Cairo Casual' is one of favorite ensembles.

all great tips! Will do! Some people were saying to dirty up the shirt and pants, but I plan to get a jacket and to thrash that. I don't know when I look at pics of Indy's clothes -they're not always dirty. For the most part he keeps them pretty nice.

I concur, Mojo.

Details that will make you look well-seasoned without being dirty: a SOC hat, lightly distressed/worn-in jacket, dirty gloves, line-dried shirt, uncreased pants, and well-worn boots.

And yes, you may have to grow your stubble out a bit longer to make it noticeable like I do. :)

Here's the thing Mojo, when you get into this hobby you gotta wear everything in and in time make it yours. This started for me back in 2003 and I'm still learning, I have an Adventurebilt Raiders fedora and I find, as I wear it, I make little adjustments here and there over time (I've had the hat since Oct. 2008) it looks more and more like the hat in the movies (maybe not every scene but overall). I'm not saying wear the whole outfit to go grocery shopping but use the different items by themselves and break them in. Garrison is an excellent fedora maker but he can only start the journey for you you have to make it yours and finish it, wear it outside as much as possible, let it get some sun so it bleaches slightly, etc.

You have a great outfit, you have all the real fundamentals, break them in and don't be afraid to crease things, beat them up, and get them dirty. You will find in the end you'll be much happier.

I know this is probably blasphemy, but if I were to make a hat for myself... in the style of Indy.... I'd get a Last Crusade Hat

But with a raiders-style bash.

Why, oh why would you say that. Any 'Indy' hat has it's own uniqueness and qualities to it. Some like one style over the other and so on and so on...but each person should go in the direction that is most intriguing and comfortable to and for them. You are you -- not Indy. You need to feel comfortable being you, with your 'Indy-ish' stylizations as they fit and work for you. The SOC looks good on you. If you feel like adding an LC/w/Raiders' bash, then that too will be you. No blasphemy here -- just your taste and desires. Nothing more, nothing less :TOH: ! W>

Thanks Jeff ;) ! I truly believe this, or I would not have stated so! The hat -- whomever is the maker, relies on the one wearing it, to make it his/hers. What they accomplish, is theirs and theirs alone and each one is unique and special. That is truly why when someone asks me what my favorite hat (out of my collection) is: I always respond with: The one I am wearing now/today! W>

Nicely said! Looking good all around. Any costume is a work in progress and you are progressing just fine! Take pics in six month after you "ruffle" the hat around - much different experience!

Ok, whew, for a minute I thought you guys were saying "WHY WOULD YOU CHANGE INDY'S HAT?" but you were actually siding with me and agreeing with me. Ok - that makes me feel better. In fact, the more I think about it, I love the gray clipper fedora. That would make a good hat in the brown Indy color.

In other words - NOT a costume hat, but just one for myself. It wouldn't be an Indy hat. It'd be for me
Ok! Now I am truly lost (key words "... in the style of Indy") and then you say: " It wouldn't be an Indy hat..."
So...if (and this is what you mentioned above) you want a hat (for yourself) that is more LC with a Raiders Bash -- then what is wrong with our comments?
Not being critical here...just not following where you see the difference. I have "Raiders-style" hats. A couple of "LC-styles", and one for Kingdom (grey Train hat) and an KOTCS Skull (brown) Indy hat on the way, oh and a Henry (AB) Indy hat. All of which are 'Indy style' hats, but only on a couple of occasions have I ever used them for costume purposes, as such. They are just some of my hats -- that I wear just like I would my Tilley T5's (waxed cotton) and Tilley T4 (also, waxed cotton), my Irish deerstalker hats/caps, other various fedoras, wool walking hats, a few ball-type caps and so on. The Indy's, again are not, in my mind -- costume based as far as my usage desires and needs are based, anymore then do I become Sherlock Holmes because I chose to wear one of the deerstalkers, etc.

Like I state -- just trying to understand where you are coming from on this one. I think it is quite possible I and the others are on the 'same page' with you, but somewhere either we or you are not quite connecting the 'dots' together in the same way thus the lack of understanding. Wow! Now, I'm confusing myself :-k ! Have a great day ;) . W>
