Blow it back to God...

Post by Scandinavia Jones »

Don't know anything about these guys, but apparently, they sell replicas of a certain German WW2 anti-tank gun, very useful when threatening to blow up religious artifacts.

Would make a nice wallhanger, wouldn't you think?

That's great. Good find. It's too bad we didn't see Indy use one of those in combat.

That's just the thing, isn't it... First of all, anti-tank weapons were not designed before WW2. Second, the weapon Indy's wielding in the movie is not supposed to be the Soviet Ruchnoi Protivotankovii Granatomet 2 (thrower of tank-protective grenade) - it came in use in the early 1950's - but one of the German predecessors. Then Panzerschreck (tank terror) came in 1943, which rules that one out. The M9A1 Bazooka was developed in 1942. The Panzerfaust (tank fist), however, is the earliest German AT gun, planned in 1941. True, none of these existed during Raiders, but chronologically, the Panzerfaust is the nearest possible weapon.
Besides, I don't think the Indy-held weapon is totally identical to the RPG-2... compare the pics:

Cool find Scandy!

Anyone interested in weapons of WWII and with a copy of the game Half-Life should try playing the mod Day of Defeat. It has all the greater known Allied and Axis weapons such as the Webley and the MP40, and we all know where we have seen them, right?

AAAHHHH....RPG-2's and -7's.....wonderful little "toys"....the PG round goes slow enough you can see it coming ...and just fast enough that you can't get away from it!!!!! :D Just remember, guys, ROTLA is like one of those old 1930's/40's serials....it's an adventure fantasy....which is why we can use RPG-2's for Panzerfausten (did I get that right, my Deutsch speaking friends????), and carry 1942-marked Mk. VII bags in 1936!!!!

I remember reading somewhere (I think it was on this very site) that in the original script for Raiders, Indy was supposed to stumble upon a secret stash of high-tech, experimental weapons at the Nazi U-boat base. While this scene never made it into the final film, it can help in explaining where Indy might have come across a weapon that wasn't supposed to exist in 1936. And if you wanted to go really far out on a limb, you could say that whatever weapon that Indy does come across, was the prototype from which the Russians developed their RPG, much in the same way the German "Sturmgewehr" (sp?) was the first true assualt rifle and directly influenced the development of the AK-47.

E.A....I like that!!! :D The Chinese do seem to have become "hung up" on that Type 56 desigantion, don't you think? I guess it's easier to keep track of inventory when everything is given a "Type 56" designation!!! :D

Yes they do, why this is I don't clearly know, maybe it refers to the year 1956 or something?

Yeah! LOL.... You can just imagine it, a General orders some more ammo for the Type 56 rifle, and he gets type 56 ration packs or something!

Hey, I've just thought, maybe it's all to do with the Chinese takeaway culture, everything there has a number! :D

"Hmm, let's see, I'll have a Type 56 assualt rifle, a Type 56 Special Fried Rice and a Type 56 tank please!"

"With or without sauce sir?"

OK, I'll stop now,

Great and educated input, guys. I prefer to see Indy's pipe-of-death as something of German origin, though. This is actually one of the points where "screen-accurate" just don't do it for me...

I understand, Scandinavia! Realizing this is a hobby for most of us, the purpose is to do whatever is enjoyable for you! I believe it would make a GREAT "wallhanger"....and if someone asks "why the rocket launcher on the wall?"...you can show them the scenes form ROTLA!!!! :D

APHE
Anti Personnel High Explosive. The warhead weighs the same but is smaller since it is not a hollow shaped charge. During Uncle Ronnie’s Caribbean Adventures our top kick fired off a few. The rest of us were not allowed to handle captured ordnance:(

“AAAHHHH....RPG-2's and -7's.....wonderful little "toys"....the PG round goes slow enough you can see it coming ...and just fast enough that you can't get away from it!!!!!”

Funny thing with PRG rounds, and lesser with LAWs, the missile tracks into the wind. Less so while the sustainer is burning. Then when it goes ballistic, turns like a curve ball. It’s strange to have to lead a target by aiming behind it.

Indy_Lee....good observation! That's why I like M84's a LOT better....the "flaming basketball" pretty much tracks on target (although in a ballistic manner, I might add!)

[M84: Carl Gustav 84mm anti-tank...and just about anti-everything else... rocket]

The 84mm Carl Gustav isn't a rocket launcher - it's a recoilless rifle. The Canadian army uses them and I got to fire one during my militia training. No recoil but the blast when you fire it feels like being hit on all sides with big pillows, and you can smell blood in your nose for a second.

Click here to see the Carl Gustav

BTW, my theory is that the Indy rocket launcher was a stage prop made up from odds and ends and spray painted black. During the close-ups you can see the hose clamps holding it together.

Amaziah, I understand the differences....I've fired a few myself! I was just referring to the relative effectiveness of anti-tank weapons.

What about the U.S. Army and the M-1! Let's see, in WWII there was the M-1 Rifle, M-1 Carbine, and M-1 helmet, and I'm probably missing one or two other "M-1's" in there somewhere.

Nope, it's a RPG all right. That's what they look like, "hose clamps" and all. It's really a very simple design and the few I've seen appeared rather crudely made.
