Fixing a bow

Post by erikgunnlugson »

Is it possible to move the knot on the bow over? It is not centered and over to the right too much. It is stitched in the back where it is but can I snip that and slide it over without losing the integrity of the bow or should I just get used to it? Also the tacks on the front and back of the bow seem a bit off. Is there anything I can do about that?

Looks like its a three piece. You may need to remove the entire thing at start from scratch? You might have enough rap around that you won't have to move the entire rap around just the bow. You will have to remove the bow to find out.J

Fixing a bow

In its current position, it may also be hiding some tack stitches on the main wrap.
See if you can see under the loop.
If you can free it you may have just enough slop to move it over a bit.
But you probably won't be able to tack it back in place.

This is a 3 piece bow. There are 4 tack stiches behind the wrap. It is on there pretty good. I thought i could pop one tack on the back and slide it over and be good. Taking it off completly might be pushing my skill level. Ill practise on an old beater hat i got first a couple times first i think. On a different note i noticed steve doesnt sign his bands anymore. Wonder why

Honestly, after looking at the photos, I would
A) leave it alone and live with it.
B) Take it completely off and start over, like John said.

I would use this as a practice hat. This is a perfect time to try it yourself.
You really just need patience, good eyes, and some minor sewing skills.

It hasn't been updated in a very long time, but check out this page for some help

BTW What kind of hat is it?

I got it second hand off e-bay. It looks brand new with no wear in the liner or sweatband or anything. Are there fakes out there? The block shape is spot on Raiders. Is there a way to tell? Maybe the previous owner mucked with the bow as it is turned and he tried to straighten it now knowing whats what. He seemed kinda clueless when I talked to him via e-mail. The sweatband has the Adventurebilt on it but it is almost getting cut off near the top. Im kinda spooked now :-0

Can you take more pics of the hat. Some different angles, under more natural lighting?
Also the sweatband and liner.

If it has the AB sweatband and liner then I would say at least part of it is a AB but that is not how Steve sews on a ribbon. I think someone altered that hat. If you want I would be willing to work on that hat but and me more shots mostly the inside of the hat with the sweatband unfolded.

Not a great looking bow. I'd take it off, and relocate it, stitching it on more properly.

Yes, the liner must come out, and the actual ribbon might need to be moved if there isn't enough under the bow to cover the hat. But doing a ribbon and bow is fun, and gets easier and better looking with practice.

Looks like someone else sewn on the ribbon to me unless after all these years he has changed his way to that which I can't imagine him doing so but it's a AB alright.

Any idea when the hat may have been made?
I'd be curious to compare it to some of that recent hats folks are posting now.
It really looks like someone messed with the bow.

I just popped off a quick e-mail to the e-bay original seller. See what info I can get from him.

As others have said the bow certainly looks off.

Don't worry about the sweatband though. I have a late 2012 AB that I ordered directly from Steve and the sweatband has exactly the same issue. (the print is nearly cut off at the top.) Interestingly mine is signed, although it's not dated. My old order that was delivered a few months earlier is also signed and has a June 2012 date.

steve cuts down his own sweatbands. I don't know why his guy can't provide him with the size he wants so Steve cuts them himself.
