Nope. It's not the lighting.

I ordered one just like that a couple of years ago. It looks that good no matter what the lighting is.

I suspect it even looks that good in the dark.
hahahaha, no doubt.
Glad to know though. Like I've said, there's something about that felt and colour that even the creases seem vintage, as if it's beenthat way forever and always will be. It's something I don't see on the other colours with this same bash.
I love this hat..... moss colour, 6 point diamond bash "The Penman" yeah.... that's the next one for me I think. Even my woman thinks so.

Ladies and gents,

Those of you who know me on this forum know that I love me some Penman hats. My total now is, I believe 12, which, as John tells me, makes me 3rd on his list of "most hats bought". Nice.

Well, I'm back to show a hat that I believe is very special.

Back in August I got to visit with John for a few days around the shop. He had a nice looking pork pie done in natural beaver with a sort of chocolate brown ribbon.

Here it is:

Image

I knew that it would make a great looking Indy fedora, and even though I already have two brown and two grey "Raiders" fedoras from John, I knew that this color combo would make a great "Raiders" hat.

So, here it is:

Image

A couple as worn by my pal, Amber:

Image

Image

And finally one in context with my "Raiders Hero" brown and my "Raiders Seaplane/CS Travel Granite"

Image

But I also have to add this:

I own 12 of John's hats, and each one just gets better than last. What strikes me about this hat is not only the color combination (which is completely John's doing, I just copied it for this hat), but the FEEL of the hat. My GOD! John's pouncing is beyond compare. I defy anyone to have a hat made for them that feels this buttery soft and pliable. And the dimensions of this hat COULD NOT BE MORE PERFECT. John's has my fit down PERFECTLY, and the brim and crown and crease are all EXCELLENT. I mean, just PERFECT.

I'm so in love with this hat and look forward to wearing it on MANY occasions!

Bravo to the hatter! Bravo! Bravo!

Couldn't agree more with everything Daren's said here (so eloquently, I might add)...

In My book, too, John's simply The Best (and he just doesn't seem capable of taking a break from consistently proving that) ;)

Very nice. I've come close to ordering that color a few times. This is probably enough to push me over the edge.

Of course at a mere 10 that would still make me a relative light weight.

Thanks everyone and thank you Daren for the kind words. The new pounce you are speaking of is something that came to me after experimenting with the hat I made for Yogey Perez Ramos the baseball player. I have been so busy working to get my long waiting list down And other projects to really focus on experiment with pouncing this year.

Since we're exploring the Penman color palette - Here's a beaver felt Sand colored Raiders with a Rust Ribbon from a couple of years ago.

The felt on this one is amazingly lightweight and cool in the summer.

Your recommendation on the ribbon color as I recall. It was between that and a more copper colored one.

For anyone considering a different color hat I'd always let John advise on the ribbon color. He's never steered me wrong.

Hi all...first post here at COW. I'm considering a Penman (I have a dark brown Akubra Fed IV and a tawny fawn Fed IV). I'm looking at the CS Train Penman, but I'm wondering if the granite color is more brown, or grey? I'm kind of looking for a more grey color, as I already have the two brown toned Akubras. Does John do Indy hats in different colored felts? Also, does the Train come bashed one way, or can it be bashed like one of the four other Indy fedoras? Thanks.

The train hat is the same as in Indy 4 granite. Same felt , same ribbon. It's grey not brown.

I can do any of the Indy hats in most colors. You should check out my site http://www.penmanhats.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; on the welcome page ( if you scroll down a bit ) you will see a link to a on line felt color swatches to see the colors I have. I can make any of the Indy hats in those colors.

As for the crease. I can crease the train hat with the other creases but it would make more sence to just have the Indy hat that you like made in that color.

I'm sorry I can't as the stock is always changing because I mostly use true vintage high quality ribbon.

As I have previously said, John's work is amazing.

I received the hat on the right yesterday. The one on the left looked the same as the one on the right when it was received nearly 4 years ago but has seen a LOT of wear and has been reblocked once.

Both hats are beaver felt Raiders hats with a turn.

I have a third, identical one in the middle (i.e. 2 years old) which is not shown and a Cairo which is also not shown, along with several others that John has supplied over the years.

I thought the contrast between new and 4 years old was interesting.

Those are some nice fedora's Ridgerunner58. John's work is outstanding as everyone knows. They fade into a SA color in a short amount of time with constant wear as they are supposed to don't they. Now I just have to ask why you keep getting the same one over and over again? Do you keep tweeking the specs with each one looking for something in particular? Do you just love the original "new" brown color and need to have one available at all times? (which is understandable of course). I have seen your sand colored raiders and that sure is a beaut. What else you got?
