Herbert Johnson and Adventurebilt

Post by stones »

Hi everyone

This is my first post on Club Obi Wan. Having had various hats including Peter Brothers, Feds 3 and 4, I now have only 2.
A Herbert Johnson and an Adventurebilt. I love both these hats. The Herbert Johnson by the way was a little large when I got it. I reduced the sweat band in size a little. I tried to reduce the felt body slightly too with loads of steam but without any success. It seems to be very durable felt. The adventurebilt is a Steve Delk beaver hat from 2008.

Welcome, stones.
:)
Cool photos...
It's always interesting to see just how many differences (sometimes subtle nuances... other times glaring characteristics) can exist between two hats that - to the untrained eye - might seem like the same hat.
I have to openly express a deeply unashamed affection for that Adventurebilt, though... it's a gorgeous lid, that's for sure.
Congratulations for getting it!

And again, Welcome!

I love the look of both the Fedoras. It is amazing however what a difference the ribbon can make in the appearance of a hat. Discount the superior quality of the AB which I am only assuming is beaver, and just look at the lids side by side and the AB in my opinion is the better looking one. It is nice however that you own two of the name brand fedoras from the films.

Thanks for posting,

Welcome, Stones. Both hats look fantastic. Most will lean towards the AB, of course...as will I. I am amazed at how well your Herbert Johnson has stood up to copious amounts of steam. Looks like you got a right good batch of felt on that one. Very nice looking hats, the both of them. Oh, and remember to check your wallet at the door...oh, nevermind :BD: .

I agree David. I'm a little amazed as well to see how well the HJ is doing. Not very SA but not bad either. The AB is fantastic of course. Look at the difference in the ribbon.

Thanks for your welcome and comments.

I love both these hats and it is interesting how the block shapes differ. (My wife thinks they both look exactly the same!). The HJ in my opinion looks very Last Crusade, The AB obviously is very Crystal Skull. The colour on the HJ is mid brown and the ribbon is very similar in colour. The felt is softer than the AB beaver and has stood up very well to all I could throw at it in an attempt to get it to shrink. It hasn't shrunk at all even when subjected to a lot of hot steam!!

cheers

I am really digging that Herby. The AB is totally Indy but that HJ is really standing its ground as very nice everyman's fedora. Beautiful hats!

OK, I'm guessing in my mind. I can see differences in the two hats, but without lables I don't know which one is the AB and which is the HJ. With the crown pinch facing the camera, which is which?

The one with the darker ribbon is the AB. It is very clear to me. Pounce job, the ribbon, the way the bow is, the block shape, etc, etc. I could go on, and on.

Thanks John, that was my guess. Owning an AB myself, it looked more familiar, but I am not the hat expert that you are. You have a very keen eye.

I think it's more that I have been looking at Steve's work so long and so closely that when I see his work it just screams out to me. I really love his work.

I love that most of us are able to tell the difference between the two hats and know which is which. That AB would stand out in a crowd.

Nice hats! I did a similar comparison between my HJ and AB back in January, when I received my CS fedora from Steve. Both hats echo the same profile, and both are equally stylish. Unfortunately, the AB was too broad-crowned for my narrow face, so I gave it to my best friend, Jaimee, the only person in the world who loves Indiana Jones as much as I do (and possibly MORE!). The hat complimented her profile like she was born to wear it, and I am absolutely convinced that she was fated to be its owner.

Oh, and Nur-Ab-Sal made me do it. :D

whipwarrior, I don't mean to go Off Topic (only a little)... but I meant to ask you this once before but forgot to do it...
The Wested Jacket that appears in those shots with those wonderful hats: what make/hide/etc Wested IS that?
Many thanks.

Mitch, my jacket is a circa 2008 Wested novapelle CS with a TON of Pecards on it. 100% cotton lining, X-box stitched side straps, no leather facings, and the front pockets situated approx. 2" from the bottom of the jacket, and from the edge of the zipper/storm flap. And my social security number is...

Anymore questions?

P.S.- I also distressed the seams with ultra-fine #0000 steel wool, just to give it that lived-in adventure look.

No, no... thanks! That was much more than I was expecting, actually... that was very kind, whipwarrior... very generous.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand... stones lovely HJ & AB:

stones, do you think there's a chance we could see each of these hats on your head for a few shots that show them at various angles?

I think you have it backwards. The hat with the darker ribbon is the Adventurebilt.

Assuming thats what you are after, both John Penman and Steve Delk have that ribbon.

Todd's Costumes sells what appears to be similar colored ribbon (not the SAME ribbon though and I've never seen it other than in pictures) for $1.95. Or you can call John Penman at info@penmanhats.com or 971-246-1832 and check his availability/price to replace your existing ribbon..

Hi Ridgerunner58, im actually after the medium brown ribbon(lighter one) on Stones HJ (not the AB) cause the rich brown color of it looks nice and it matches the felt, i want to style my Christy's the Last Crusade Venice Style, thats my secondary favorite style with the Raven Style being the primary. thanks RidgeRunner58 :) Btw do know any vendor or member that might have or sell a ribbon with the medium brown color that i pointed out? Thanks in advance! ;) PM me if someone has or knows anyone who sell the medium brown ribbon. Thanks.
