Just for fun: Who owns the most Indy fedoras?

Post by Charybdis »

I couldn't help but notice that a lot of you gents seem to own more than one fedora, so I thought I would pose a fun question to see who wins the contest: who here at COW owns the most Indy fedoras?? Post your number and we'll see who wins the chilled monkey brains!

I own (or will own): 1. ha!

They're not all Indys, but does this count? This was the last time I took a photo inventory about a year and a half ago—and I still ended up leaving some out—but I've acquired a few more hats since then. :- It really is a sickness.

Bink, you're my hero! I've always loved that picture.

For me I have two bona fide Indy hats, a brown ROLA and a brown CS with a grey CS on order. My Sahara colored 'Michaelson' was made on an AB CS block so it's half Indy.

Other hats I have that we've seen Indy wear are a Boy Scout campaign hat and a newsboy.

To round thing out I have two straw, a black Garrison Bogey, a moss Garrison Bogey and a Man With No Name cowboy hat.

Indiana Jeff

Three brown Raiders, one LC, two Gray Raiders (one granite, one charcoal), so . . . 6. Then I have another five fur felt fedoras, not Indy style.

Let's see . . .

2 Adventurebilt ROLA Beaver - Brown
1 Adventurebilt CS Beaver - Brown
1 Adventurebilt CS Beaver - Grey Travel

2 Penman ROLA Beaver - Brown
1 Penman ROLA Beaver - Clipper Grey
1 Penman ROLA Beaver - Sand

1 Penman Cairo (Rabbit)

1 Garrison Cairo (Rabbit)

1 Magnoli HJ

1 Herbert Johnson

2 Akubra Federation - Brown
1 Akubra Federation - Black

1 light grey beaver felt custom made by Roberts Hats in Abilene, TX in the early 80s. (Ribbon is too narrow and the felt was too stiff, but otherwise it's a nice hat)

So 16 . . . 13 if you take out the ones that are not either brown or granite.

Plus a couple of other Penmans (Howard Hughes and Penman), a dove grey Barnstormer from Vintage Silhouettes (Art Fawcett) , several other Akubras (Cattleman, Squatter, Bushman, Slouch), a couple of 30 year old Stetson fedoras, an old Abercrombie & Fitch Safari hat, a couple of Banana Republic Safari hats (made by Akubra) from the early 80s, several Panama hats, a couple of western hats, my grandfather's Open Road Stetson and my dad's Smithbilt Homburg from the 50s.

I wonder if there's medication for this . . . .

Just one, although awaiting on an AB (at which point someone is going to get a good deal on my Christy's!). I have a Carbon Grey Fed IV with an Indy-esque crease, but I don't really consider it an "Indy Hat" per se.

I must be in the neighborhood of about 15 or so total hats, mostly vintage and custom.

OK, to continue the fun, let's take this in a slightly different; but related direction.

How many distinct Indy hats are there to own? Not meaning vendor offerings, but from the films themselves. My quick and dirty count:

ROLA
1. Brown
2. SOC Brown
3. Clipper Grey

TOD
4. Brown

LC
5. Brown (from "Fedora")
6. Brown

CS
7. Brown
8. Train Grey

Regards,

Indiana Jeff

My regular winter wear AB is number 5 from Jeff's list, but in dark grey.

I have around 19 or 20. Not exactly sure, as I fell head first into the closet while trying to sort them out and kind of lost interest in continuing the count after that. :[

My modest collection includes:

- 1 Custom Akubra Fed 4 (per Steve Delk)
- 1 Jimmy Pierce, which I reblocked myself but is in desperate need of a good reblock
- A handful of black or brown cowboy hats I intended to reblock but haven't found the time for
- 1 brown semi-blocked raw body that could use finishing
- 1 Fur Felt DP, home reblocked (which has since developed a hole near the brim break from my *ahem* amateur skills)

And I think that covers it. The only other hat I've owned is a Garrison Raider, which I tearfully offered up on Ebay a couple of years ago. I would love to get my hands on a Penman in the near future though. They look just too good to pass up!

They remind me of Art Fawcett's hats, especially the bow work and color combinations.

I'd definitely say there's a work of Art or two in there as well... ;)

I do have an Art Fawcett styled after the type of lid my Grandfather used to wear in addition to my Indy lid. I didn't include that info at first, but since everyone else is free styling... :TOH:

Thanks a lot guys! When I got my first hat, an Akubra Campdraft, I never imagined that I'd like wearing it so much and get the interest to obtain more.

Here is the list of the hats in the photos - I've not come up with a creative way to get all the hats in one shot, like Rick's.

Column 1
Stetson 7X Clear Beaver Quality
Stetson Stratoliner
Stetson Bluegrass Whippet
VS Art Fawcett - Black Cherry
VS Art Fawcett - Silvermist
Matt Deckard Powell
Tumwater Hats - Silverbelly
Tumwater Hats - Steel
Borsalino
Dobbs Cross Country
Borsalino

Column 2
Borsalino Pesca
Stetson Whippet
Bosalino Cobolt Blue
VS Art Fawcett - Silverbelly
VS Art Fawcett - Dark Moss
Adventurebilt
Akubra Campdraft
Garrison Raiders
Stetson 7X Clear Beaver Open Road
Borsalino
Stetson Playboy

Column 3
Stetson Zephyr Weight
Borsalino
Borsalino
VS Art Fawcett - Black
VS Art Fawcett - Sahara
Black Sheep Hatworks
Tumwater Hats - Pecan
Penman Casablanca
Dobbs 20
Adam - Mr Main Street
Borsalino

Jeff, Tony at Tumwater Hats has a distinctive style and does nice work.

There is a thread of his hats at Fedora Lounge. I don't know what the policy is here so I won't link to it, but it is called "tonyb hatter and gentlemen" if you want to track it down.

That makes sense - there are not many of those Mode Edge 7XCBs around and the Dobbs could just have easily been a Cavanagh or Knox since HCA was making basically the same hat for their various brands (the General Motors of the Hat business).

Interesting that you can identify the work of the different custom guys.

And I was going down that same road with my thinking.

Custom ones are very easy to spot.
