Hat stand?

I really need to put my fedoras on stands. Seems to me I'd want something that would help preserve the bash. Todd's has a nice hat rest for half the price of the same rest elsewhere. Any recommendations?

I was looking on eBay for stands and mannequin heads, and darned if this guy doesn't bear a passing resemblance to someone who wears a fedora:

I have been using old wooden thread spools that I found in antique stores. I found some with about 4" diameter ends that are about a foot long that are perfect for my ABs.

Amusingly (or should I say typically?), after I ordered some of those heads to hang my hats on, one of my son's friends gave him a couple of those cheap plastic party fedoras. All I'd have to do is trim them and put them on some kind of posts, and they'd work fine. But I'll see how the heads work out first.

You could always make a stand. The easiest method is to grab one of those styrofoam balls from a craft store (one of the larger ones), buy a thick dowel from your local home center (Lowes or Home Depot), and a 1/2" thick piece of lumber (cut it so the weight is distributed evenly). Cut a hole in the bottom of the foam ball, cut down dowel to about 12", insert one end into bottom of foam ball, cut a hole in the flat lumber and glue the other end of the dowel in that hole.

I'll be curious to see how the heads work out. I would think you'll need to weigh them down in some way to avoid tipping them over all the time.

I like the idea of the 'foam ball on a stick' too.

I have some foam heads from Hobby Lobby that I used to use for something else. I don't have a whole lot of room so I usually keep one hat out at a time on a foam head. Doesn't look all super-classy like some of the hat stands I've seen, but it works.

Here's what I did. There are plastic bases available for the heads, but I've already gotten carried away. I should have just bought a couple of rests from Todd, but I figured it couldn't hurt to have some heads lying around in case I ever need one. —Wait, what?

I cut the brims off the party fedoras and put them on the heads...



...and then put the real fedoras on.



The necks are wide enough that they're pretty stable.

No comments (or screams) from the wife so far.

Personally, I just keep one hat out at a time and put in on a hall tree when not worn.
The rest stay in their boxes, as I've found that un-worn hats immediately become dust magnets.

Fluffy 'dust bunnies' on a fedora do not an adventure hat make.......

Personally, seeing a couple of decapitated heads sitting in a shelf is just kind of creepy!

I have a set of pegs mounted on the wall next to the coats that I hang my current rotation of hats on.
This time of year, that's usually 3 different colors to match the days jacket.
I and hear you 'bout the dust magnet.
My akubra graphite really shows it.
Luckily I make the kids do a pass with the vacuum when they're doing it.

Make sure the kids vacuum in a counterclockwise direction, as you would when brushing. The opposite on the underneath side.

Most of my hats stay in their boxes. I keep two out at a time usually. The one I have just worn or will wear the next day and an old western beater that gets tossed on for working outside. I never put it in a box.
