Mine looked exactly like that, so I pulled it out and throw it away. It feels better on my head now. Until I read on here that there was a wire in there, I thought something had gone horribly wrong with my liner!

There's no reason to pull it out unless there are kinks in it.

So I have a question about this metal band. I've had my Fed IV for about 7+ months and it's already been through a lot (considering our weird weather this year, plus I've worn it on a few adventures of my own)... the band is getting kinked a tad. If I take it out, am I loosing anything important, like relating to sizing or brim shape?

Also, mine is a size 56, and it's had to shrink a bit to fit right on my rather small head. I'm weighing giving the brim a trim, perhaps by a 1/8" - 1/4". Has anyone here done this with their Fed and still maintained a good Raiders look? I'm a bit nervous to do this because it can't be undone, but wide brims feel too wide on me. I saw a post a few pages back on this thread where one member trimmed his brim a touch and felt it looked better.

I narrowed the crease on my Fed IVs because they were getting too wide. The back of the crease had to be lifted a bit, as well, for it to look right. Here's the brown one.

I'm surprised that my hat didn't come off. I did keep a light hand on it when the wind was on the strongest but It hardly moved, except for the brim flopping around.

geez, if the hat fell down the waterfall... :-0

that was not the same hat Holt. The one you saw that day was an old, grey hat i bought of some russian streetseller in Bodø years ago. Got it for 50 NOK. my favourite after the Fed4. But it does have a similar swoop on the brim like the Fed4 does on the picture, and the crown is really similar to the YIJ hat too ;)

i was surprised that you recognized me in that hat. don't think i've shown it off here before

I dig your hat, Chil.

I like this picture. Sorry you can't see the hat well, but the silhouette looks kinda neat.

btw... has anyone here ever pulled the trigger on a black Fed IV? How do they look? There isn't a single one in this entire thread. :( I noticed hatsdirect.com now have them in "Deluxe". They only had the standard version for a long time.

Here's my first attempt at bashing my new (standard) Fed IV! This is my first fedora, and I'm really happy with the results. I was going for a Raiders look.

After some inspiration from Holt's "reblocked Fed" thread, I tweaked my Raiders pinch a touch. Then, for some reason last night when I couldn't sleep, I got out the fuller's and did a little "paint" job. I'm really happy with the results, and though this picture doesn't quite get all the fuller's, it still turned out pretty cool, I think:

Thanks, and yes, when I got the hat I wasn't sure how much I liked the turn so there is only a real slight one. If I had a block I would reblock the hat and start over. But I'm guessing without doing a full reblock, since the pinch has been in for as long as it has, it might not come out how I'd like... of course, I could be wrong...

Both are very nice hats, fifthchamber, and my own brown hat has been rained on more times than I can count anymore.

However, I've got to ask, is the guy with sideburns above your Deluxe Brown Federation supposed to be artwork of Lupin the Third? I'm a fan, even got him in my avatar!

Hahah....

Nah, actually, the guy with the burns was me....I had that painted for me by elementary school students about 2 years back when I had washboard burns going.....The kids loved it and the photo is of me at that time....

Although I'd bet that they were drawing inspiration from Lupin (Rather than Wolverine for example!) so you're probably not far from the truth!

It may be soon time for me to get a gray FedIV. To this day, the one and only Indy hat I have ever owned is my precious AB Henry. It would be nice to see what another fan-favorate Indy hat feels like.

A new Moonstone Fed IV....

Not real happy with the ribbon/bow (look at the lower front corner of the bow  ) however, I was kind of expecting it. I'd like to find some vintage style ribbon and replace it.
Anybody know where to get vintage style ribbon in black?

I went for a generic Indy style bash.
Still working on getting some LC curl to the brim.

Overall, I'm am very satisfied with the hat.

I like the colour scheme...That might be my next hat!

The bow work is never stunning on the Fed's....Both of mine aren't great..But then, what do you expect from a factory hat? They're good for not having been done by hand! Just not as sterling as John's or Steve's work eh?

Thanks for the show! I'll have to save up some more! :TOH:

Check with David Garrison (Local Land Surveyor). At one time he was offering the ribbon he uses on his hats. It's not vintage, but it's very nice.

I gave it a light dusting of Fuller's (actually "Indian Healing Clay" that my sister in law left at the house). I have my new, darker ribbon from LLS so I'll be putting that on eventually.

(Never mind the gun; it's a work in progress. My unconscious trigger discipline both pleases and amuses me.)

I recently purchased a regular Federation IV in a dark brown. I really love this hat, but my concern is with the color. It's so dark that I really don't think it's brown until I place it up against a black object. Is this how a Federation starts out and it just naturally weathers to a more brown color? Just wondering if there was a more natural brown color offered that has been discontinued. Thanks for the help.

The Fed IV is a fairly dark brown, but it is definitely brown to my eyes. It is noticeably darker than my AB Henry which also had more red in it, iow, the Henry is warmer looking than the Fed IV.

I got mine new in spring 2009, and it the color has mellowed a bit over time.

I think I just figured it out. They sent me a Carbon Grey version, even though I ordered dark brown and it's on the invoice. I sure hope they'll take it back, since it's not a sizing issue on my part.

I agree, JLee, but I wasn't sure there was a new type of dark felt as this my first Federation to pick up. I just haven't been able to view the hat in daylight since I come home from work at night time. I didn't want to assume the worst until I started reviewing all the wonderful pics in this thread.
