I got this at a great price, it is a lovely hat I never expected to be able to own.... but why IS the bow so far forward? Is that part of "the turn" (forgive my ignorance) ?
The pinch & the rear of the sweat line up spot on. So what gives?
Form those two shots I would say its a hat that is tuned or creased off center like it should for a Raiders hat. Can you post pics of the inside of the hat?
I believe that the ribbon and bow have been removed and replaced as it does not appear as "neat" as any other AB bow set I have ever seen. I cannot imagine Steve or any of the other hat makers sending out a hat with a ribbon that looks like that. Dont get me wrong, its got charactor..its just not as neat and tidy as these hats are when you first get them..
boy am I gonna look foolish if Steve claims this one

I will try & post one soon. But I am tellin' ya'- the pinch & rear sweatband seam like up perfectly!
It looks like the ribbon was altered. See how you can see the wrap ribbon under the bow? The ribbon should flow seamlesly into the bow and not show under it. I agree with the assessment that it isn't the original AB bow placement.
Just going by what I do. If someone wants one of my raiders hat I use a two part bow and ribbon. Bow and rap around is one and the other is the not. What was used in the movie was a three part. Rap around was one, bow was two and the not was the third part like what we see I. Your photos. I do the three part when someone ask or if I do a Cairo hat with distressing.
I would guess since you bought this 2nd hand that someone moved or replaced it. Placing the bow on any hat is more than eyeballing it. You must take measure, nets to place it right. I never did so much math as I do now ,akin hats.
The other thought comes to mind is that if the person this hat was for or who ever replaced it ( lot of speculation going on here). Could have a odd shape head and the ribbon was done like this to account for the turn look and placement of the ribbon and that's why it's off.
I do agree that this doesn't look like steve ribbon work. Just trying to answer the question on why things are lining up the way they are.
Is it just a tiny bit snug? If so a stretcher will help with that. When wearing the hat is the bow in the right place? Like Ford in Raiders? Do you get the turned effect? Do you even want the turned effect?
Answer all these question then I can give you some advise my friend.

Thanks for your good council 'Oak, much obliged.
A bit snug, yes, I need a haircut & less than .375" or so. As it stands the bow looks too far forward when the hat is worn as is....I am thinking of returning it to an open crown on the stretcher & re-creasing it w/ the bow properly oriented. Is that viable?
Honestly, if it were me, I'd just have the ribbon re-done. That doesn't look like Steve's ribbon work. Whether it is or it isn't, an AB deserves a better looking ribbon.

any chance of a shot of you wearing it?
I'll try & get one in the daylight.
Here is a SOC bash from a fan page w/ a bow that looks no farther forward than mine-
Keep in mind too that the above (op) are uber crappy auction photos. It really is a very nice looking hat.
Whatever the circumstances, its your cool new hat...an AB at that! And u got it at a good price...just wear the darn thing and if the ribbon bothers u, pay one of these awesome hat vendors to put it how u see fit or better yet, ask for advice and fix it yourself. Ur overthinking it all and wasting time enjoying ur hat.
I'd suggest going offline and make arrangements with John Penman and get the ribbon repositioned and the hat sized properly to fit your noggin.
Don't misunderstand, I totally agree with what Gorak says....but the first thing that I thought when I saw your photo above was MAN that ribbon is a LONG way off.
You're going to see that everytime you look at a reflection of yourself, and it's going to be nagging at you in the back of your mind even when you think you've convinced yourself it's 'fine', so why not just make it right now and be done with it? Once done, you'll enjoy that hat for literally years and years.
Seriously. I have mine.
There are enough 'what if's' in life. Don't let this one be yet another.
I agree with Michaelson, get it fixed. You'll never regret it. Personally, I found that trying it myself brings a lot of it's own rewards. I've done a few myself and its great to know there's a piece of my workmanship in there. Ribbons are not too difficult to do and if you mess it up, you'd be sending it off for repair anyway. Good luck and enjoy.
