Finidng Holster Leather

Post by Indy1024 »

Hey guys,
it's been a long time since I've posted here, but I'm going to try to make a flap holster. Not for a replica gun, but just a Heritage Rough Rider with a short barrel. I thought it would be pretty awesome to make an Indy style holster for it!
Anyway, I'm looking around the Tandy Leather website, and there are a bunch of different choices. Can you guys point me in the direction of the most economical type of leather that is god for holster making?
Thanks a bunch! :TOH:
Btw, I tried the search, but didn't find much. Maybe you guys know of some threads that can help me out. :)

From my rather basic understanding of leather, what you are looking for is about (at most?) 1 square yard of 8-9oz Vegetable Tanned leather.
You should check the Tandy website for the nearest store location and go on in and talk to somebody. They even have pre-made holster kits that aren't half bad. It'd get you used to the leather work.

Apart from that, you'll need a needle, the right knife, a hole puncher, a mallet, thread, dye (that you can get a Michaels), and maybe even a stitching horse (if you like it easy). That's if you want to do it the "Proper" way. I'm sure a nail and a hammer would suffice for the hole puncher in a pinch.

That's from what I know, I'm sure a more experienced individual will take over and tell you what you should REALLY do.
