Leather samples from Wested...

Post by Texan Scott »

Sometimes it is difficult to get leather samples, but I was just wondering if anyone might have some novapelle, cowhide and possibly horse hide leather samples from Wested they could send or display in this 'lil ol' thread...? Basically, I was looking for all the cowhide and horsehide samples that they currently have on hand.

Got you covered on that one, Croft. I sent the money maybe 2 months ago, but still have not received the samples, so I thought someone might have some samples on hand that they could post or send. Looks like Wested has stocked a variety of cowhide leather onhand at present, but I'd like to see them before I pull the chain. Any and all HH too.

I requested some samples, even sent money via paypal for samples..................follow up emails, nothing.

Business lost. I don't care how good certain jackets look, when I feel cheated or disrespected as customer I vote with my pocket book and use their competitors.

It's basic customer service. If you say, "yes...we can send samples", and then charge money for it............they owe to the customer. Gibson & Barnes is a company with excellent customer service. Asked for, and received in 3 days for some leather samples. I've already purchased 3 jackets from them, a 4th (non-Indy) is being made. I think Wested turns out some wonderful jackets. I probably would have owned more than one if the quality control, and customer service were better. I'd think a small shop like that would be much better at the customer service basics.

Granted, I wanted a really nice LC jacket from Wested, using a skin of my choice, but I'd like to see the options first, before going forward. Holt, did you ever sell your HH?

We are always sending out samples and sometimes 2 or 3 times to people who say they have never received them.
On investigation it appears that in the case of USA as there is no documentation i.e. customs declaration in the envelopes
they are not allowed in the country and are often destroyed. Not like a jacket with a courier we send standard postage.
If anyone has a better plan I would like to hear it.

I know it is not like having the samples in hand, but even if photos could be posted of the different skins, jackets, etc., to get some idea as to color, grain, etc.? I'd like to find a relatively dark cowhide (not too dark, not too light) that is basically light weight. I can say, though, that to date, I have not received any samples, unfortunately.

To be fair I've since spoken to Gemma on the phone about my order and without prompting she did explain why no samples have been sent out to me yet. A quick phone call can be worth a whole string of emails.

...all of that has been done. I've even spoken to Peter a couple of times about it. Apparently, the mail, customs, etc., is not letting these samples go through this time around. In the past, I have received samples within days of when they were requested.

I wonder if the leather samples were used as packaging materials around some trivial little item like a keyring or matchbox car if they might make it through... Just a thought.

The last sample I received from Wested was about a year ago, and came in a nice white bubble wrap parcel bag. No problems at all getting here, but after the last crazy who tried to set his shoes on fire on a plane, customs and the like have gone absolutely stupid.

It makes it difficult for Wested, and makes it difficult for potential customers...and all because of one person's actions. :-s

Sad.

What I was interested in was samples of the worn look hide, pre-distressed hide, soft seal brown cowhide, current novapelle choices and any samples of HH.

Yes, I would love to see a pic of the novapella, and because no leather looks the same, a pic will at the very least give me an idea. In the last year I've learned alot from you guys, and am getting ready to order a new one from Wested, just want pics of their hides.

LOL, been lurking mostly in the props section. Makin' a few things, journals and the like. Managed to pick up a nice Wested Raiders lamb from a friend at a fair price, and now know I sized my first one to small. Thought I'd give it a new go around. Only now I know what I'm after. Other than that, Just been keepin' on keepin' on. Hear about some disturbances around abouts and been trying to make out what went down. Hope all is well with everyone.

Nova, meaning new. Pelle meaning pelt, skin, hide. :P

It's simi-thick cowhide. Used to, and I don't know about now, but they had 2 different Novapelle hides: one was a very dark brown, almost black looking cowhide and the other was called copper novapelle (a natural, carmel-medium brown color), and it looked like this:

Today, they have these other hides: pre-distressed, worn look hide, soft seal brown hide, and of course-novapelle.

It's my understanding that the "worn look hide" might be the way to go, these days...? They say it is lighter than novapelle, and the distressed look gives it some character.

I find the novapelle a little subtler and less broken than the worn look.

This is the regular NP against the copper.

From what I can piece together, (and I hope you guys don't mind me borrowing these images), here is a sampling of P&S's, waxy-soft seal brown cowhide (reddish undertones):

I think the best idea would be to have someone take some pictures and post them here if that is possible. Some people have already done that by showing jackets or samples. I myself am interested in seeing what your new veg tanned leather looks like, but other might want to see something else. I think this would be the best solution at the moment.

For me, it is a toss up between the worn look hide and the darker pre-distressed hide that Holt posted of the XO jacket. That worn look stuff is great!...if you can reproduce that shade with the right leather conditioner.

Same here, I'm really liking that worn look. My first jacket from them was made of the pre-distressed hide, didn't really warm up to the look untill after a Pecards treatment.

A new topic is a good idea, as it will get lost in this thread.

Folks who could give you answers will not bother looking in a 'wested leather samples' discussion for a specific set of questions about HH. :TOH:

I tell you what would also look really cool for LC, and maybe closer to the film jacket, would be to take the dark novapelle skin and layer a lighter, chocolate brown color on top of it? Then you'd be ready for the leap from the lions head! ;)

I was considering that one - but Peter says it's dyed all the way through - so it won't show any highlights as it ages.
