While getting out of the shower today I was struck by inspiration. Probably not a new idea, really, but one I have not seen suggested in my time here.

What to do with your fedora while in a restaurant? An age old question, at least one since hatchecks have gone the way of, well, men regularly wearing fedoras. I submit the following for your consideration:


Your average, run of the mill, over-the-door towel hook.







I haven't field tested this, but as a proof of concept at home it would seem to fit the bill.

Obviously the hook is limited in the thickness of chair, but I've seen similar hooks made of metal that have an adjustable foot that may be wider with the foot removed.

Gonna pick one up today! I might get two and snap the hook off of one and place it on the top. This way I could also clip it to a table and hang my hat on it when seated in a booth...

Great idea - now wouldn't the purse hanger also work for a Fedora at a booth? The only reason I am suggesting that over plastic on a table is the purse hanger has a weighted top that won't slip - I'd hate to have a dress fedora end up on a greasy spoon floor.

I've thought about the purse hanger idea and have tried it with a hanger my Bride has. The only hangers I've seen are balanced such that the hanger itself forms a "C" with the purse actually under the table. The hook for the purse would need to be turned 180 degree so the hat would not be under the table. And, I figure the hat hanging off the end of the table is more apt to get spills or bumped by the wait staff than if it's on the back of the chair.

Perhaps glue thin strips of rubber on the inside where it clamps to the table ot chair to reduce slippage.

It does look like a good idea, but my hat would invariably end up on the floor, hanging off the back of my chair in any busy restaurant.

Time was when most places came equipped with hat racks. No more. Sad thing. I generally balance mine on a knee, a chair when available. Your hook is a good idea, depending on the space allotted between tables and chairs. But figure it should work as often as not. Thanks for the good idea.

One of the neater things I've come across in my antique store wanderings are when I run across old movie theater seats.

They USED to have a wire mounted underneath every seat that allowed you to slide your hat under the seat. The hat was suspended by it's brim on the wire, crown side down.

A real neat answer to what to do with your hat when you went to the movies.

The church I grew up attending was old enough there were clips built into the backs of the pews (benches) for men to clip their hats while they attending mass. I remember asking my dad what they clips were for and him telling me that when he was growing up all the adults wore hats to church and this gave them somewhere to put them.

I am A.D.D. and very paranoid about forgetting my hat, so I say . . . "Sir, please don't forget your hat!"

I tip I learned here, put your car keys in your hat. You won't get far before you realize you don't have it with you.
